I personally think it's a bad idea. Minecraft itself is a unique game, there isn't many similar games. If you thought of any other gaming category for example FSP, you can probably name 3 off the top of your head. Adding potions makes Minecraft less unique. Lets face it, it's been done before, in many many games even Terraria!
Why does Minecraft need to copy ideas of other games when it has things that are so Minecrafty. Creepers, endermen, redstone.
I like the reality of Minecraft (with a few exceptions). All these things that are being added like potions just put Minecraft in the fantasy category, and I can name about 5 fantasy games off the top of my head.
Sigh, not this again.
Listen. You cannot find potions anywhere, you must make them. So you don't have to use them, thus you don't have to craft them. And don't even say "BUT IF I WANT BLAH BLAH I HAVE TO USE A POTION" Before you make them you have to craft all this **** which is pretty hard, so you can't be forced to use them as there's many steps you have to do before making them.
And they didn't copy it from other games. Other games have zombies, spiders, skelitons, crafting, mining, farming, and building too. You saying they copied that?
And don't say "But now no one will like mincraft cause of potions" either. About 80% of the players who own Minecraft Beta know about 1.9's upcoming features. And only about 8% of those people hate the idea of potions, enchantments, etc.

Im sorry but Minecraft could have easily fit into Fantasy a long time ago. We got zombies and skeletons and giant spiders, and skeletons.
That's easily places Minecraft in Fantasy right there.
Then you got Diamond Swords/Armor... which might aswell be labeled Fantasy.
Then theres the Nether which has been around for a long time now so... other dimensions reached by magical portals.
Redstone... which is more or less magic dust.
Also Potions dont only exist within Fantasy stories and actually exist in real life. Magic potions on the other hand not so much. Well depends on who you talk to I guess.
But yeah.
I also love how its seemed to switch. For awhile ppl were saying Terraria was copying Minecraft. THis wasnt to long ago if I remember correctly but now... it seems to be the other way.
But...
Yeah Minecraft has been easily labeled fantasy from the start. Hell I believe Notch even made a blog about this ages ago. :tongue.gif:
Potions and most new features are voluntary. Don't like the nether/ Don't go. Don't like potions? Don't make them. Wish you couldn't breed animals? Don't.
Okay, at first I used to agree with you that stuff like hunger and what not is ruining what minecraft used to be. But then it grew on me and it does not bother me anymore and I am actually wanting to know what can be added next.
I don't like alchemy in Oblivion, can Bethesda please remove it, I don't think it accurately portrays the game how I want it to be. Oh... this is the Minecraft forum, yet, I seem to think that your wishes will have just as much impact on the game developers as my statement (as false as it was, I love potions). This forum's name should be changed from 1.9 Update Discussion to "People incessantly whining about their fear of change and thinking that their own selfish opinions matter to the rest of the Minecraft community"

Minecraft always was a fantasy game. Besides how many games actually let you create and customize potions? It adds a bit of puzzle to the game. Power-ups are always fun. Also, GTFO of my forums. Quit being such a conservative.
ADDING POTIONS DOES NOT RUIN THE GAME sorry im pissed of every single bloody post i have seen acting like potions will end the world. everything is optional if you dont like it tough luck
the game is still being made stop crying that things are being added and changed
First started playing when it went Beta. I liked the whole survival aspect; how you were thrown into a world to survive, build structures, etc. It was unique in it's own way and it was simple.
Now it has potions, villagers, mushroom biomes, an RPG system.. Doesn't appeal to me at all personally. Feels like the above mentioned, but mixed with a very watered down (Both graphically and mechanically) modern RPG.
And I can't help but feel like the people who actually like this stuff are very nerdy - I mean, I can't talk because I play Minecraft, but this stuff adds a whole new level of nerd to this game. This is the kinda stuff I avoided in the Mod forum pre-1.8
Punching trees apart...
diamond gems as tools...
alternate dimensions...
zombies...
magical glowing dust...
Doesn't sound very realistic to me. I'm going to go out on a limb and say you're dead wrong in hating potions.
But I think that diamonds are pretty realistic being used for tools. I mean, there is no point of jewelry other than aesthetics, and diamonds are pretty solid and sharp. Here are some examples:
I still agree with you though, especially with the fact that you can thrive so easily. (Making tools in seconds, 30 Minecraft seconds to mine a block, torches without a lighter, etc.)
Sigh, not this again.

Secondly, they fit with the idea of minecraft (explore and discover new things). Personally, I really like the idea.
Notch has always wanted to add alchemy. I don't blame you for not knowing but
/hipster glasses
I come from indev
/old man voice
where we got updates and we liked them!
Nah that's silly.
Potions and most new features are voluntary. Don't like the nether/ Don't go. Don't like potions? Don't make them. Wish you couldn't breed animals? Don't.

If it aint worth fixing dont fix it.

Ehm, people use that stuff in life too...
SPLASH POTIONS IN MUTIPLAYER
Besides, I find it difficult to punch cubes of cobblestone out of boulders. Same with trees.
But I think that diamonds are pretty realistic being used for tools. I mean, there is no point of jewelry other than aesthetics, and diamonds are pretty solid and sharp. Here are some examples:
1. Catwoman's Diamond claws.
2. Diamond-tipped saw blades.
3. Diamond-tipped drills.
