I knew I was not crazy. That is the exact noise I would hear and i'm fairly sure everyone else is talking about. I thought it was the sound of silverfish taking over blocks.
On the other hand though, I don't remember hearing monsters making walking noises.
This is the same as in ghosts and paranormal ****. People hear about something paranormal. They start subconsciously wait for it to happen on their part. When something happens, or they would want something to happen, something barely fitting on the event they were told about, they believe they saw it. As all the scary stuff and other "experiencers" make it cool thing, you want to believe. That's why people shouldn't have "i believe" image of herobine in their sig, they should have "i want to believe".

Suddenly an wild minecraft appeared!

They're coming to get you, they're slowly making their way towards you. Was that hole in the wall there before? What's inside? Maybe I should take a look? Maybe you? Did something move? What was that?
I was in an abandoned mine shaft and i heard fast digging and walking on dirt.
it was scary D:
I heard that sound too! I couldnt figure out wtf it was, also heard rapid footsteps on dirt and water, but not the default minecraft walking on dirt and water sound, it was different. Freaky.
I dont know why everyones acting like this is a mysterious or paranormal event, and people are desperate to blame it on mass paranoid hysteria, i figured it was just a new feature like when notch added creepy ambiant cave noises for dark caves, that he added sounds for the mindshafts to simulate the ghosts of dead miners being around or somthing, its freaky, but a nice touch I think.
And I dont know if I got the same sounds as other people, but you cant mistake it for a mob walking, they arnt the default minecraft noises (least the ones ive heard), theyre more like the cave noises or disk sounds. I've heard the cave noises though so thats why i assume these noises are new and exclusive to mineshafts.
I agree its just a new feature. Unless some one goes out and writes creepy pastas about it, I will just believe it to be a nice little touch.
Its fun to believe though.
Can people recording videos of these sounds please add a volume benchmark by breaking or placing blocks manually? I had to turn up the volume really high on the "Minecraft Ghosts" video to allow me to hear them clearly, and by that point I'm going to assume that it's just footsteps.
Just don't let the Endermen sneak up on you...or you will get rear'ended!
I still have never heard these supposed sounds in mineshafts and I have spent plenty of time in them the last 2 weeks . I hear spiders , slimes , endermen walking around and moving/placing blocks , water etc. nothing exciting . Even though it would be cool if there was something , like every full moon phase have ghosts wander around towns , strongholds , mineshafts .
Haven't heard any strange sounds other than what I find to be Creepers or Endermen walking around. But I won't dismiss this as I will not dismiss the existence of the Herobrine. It adds to the atmosphere.

In the real world, you stick your head in the dirt to hide from problems.
In Minecraft, you stick your head in the dirt to find problems.
Lol you guys. You know what causes the digging sound? Spiders climbing up waterfalls against dirt.
HOWEVER, on my 1.8.1 server, I have heard really strange sounds in caves, twice. One was this really creepy sounding music that that lasted barely one second, and I can't remember what the other one was. I KNOW I am not imagining this. I was going down a cave shaft from the surface and I heard this ****ing creepy ass music.
iv'e only heard it in SMP... i am mineshaft exploring most of the time, hearing stone and dirt breaking, while my friend is on-ground getting some tools ready.

If you actually listened, You would of noticed that HE WASN'T WALKING.
Remember: cannibalism is always an option.
This, I've traced the sounds before, and its the cave spiders humping the gravel / dirt / sand.

The Endermen know you have heard their tale.
And are going to do the same to you.
