The amount of potions refers to the factorials of the ingredients (if each ingredient can only be used once) . If there are 3 ingredients, with three slots, the equation is 3!
e.g.
x y z
x z y
y x z
y z x
z x y
z y x
3! = 3*2*1 = 6 combinations.
You guys all need to learn some maths.

You should be more careful.
You almost suggested that there were new features that you would have accepted.
there's handfuls of things that have been added to the game that i enjoy quite thoroughly. not just tweaks (stairs orient to your facing, etc) and bugfixes, but full-blown features as well (dye-able wool was nifty at first, lost it's cuteness quickly tho)
i just take issue with the direction the game is [finally] heading
the original implementation of alchemy was potentially ****ing amazing, but from what i've seen so far of the new version, it doesn't look to be very attractive
I doubt they will, they have to come up with the look of all the outcomes and the coding of what they each will individually do, that would take a while.
I love how every 1.9 thread you post in you're horribly wrong and get owned for it :3

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." §7- Mark Twain
Ok, right now there are 35,000 total potions, due to the limit of the variable "damage". Of those, about 161 are currently "unique", meaning the only potion with that combination of effects. When alchemy is done, I'm assuming the total number of potions will be the same, but more of them will be unique (2000+).
It's really not all that complicated, at least not compared to the monster of an algorithm they use to determine what each reagent does, when. You guys should check out the All About Potions thread here; there's a ton of useful info regarding what potions are like right now.

There's even a handy list of them there! It's like magic right?

I admit that the Blaze rod hat rack looks like **** compared to cauldrons.
But think about it (now that it's been clarified by more educated posters than either of us). There will be 2,000+ unique potions, versus the 161 that we have now. That sounds like a buff, rather than a nerf, and Jeb never actually said that he was altering the number of potential combinations. So for all we know, there will still be 30,000 of those. Additionally, he strongly suggests that we'll have access to more ingredients.

I don't get why everyone is making a final judgement anyway, to be totally realistic, the only thing we've seen of the new potion system is just that -one- picture. Nobody has seen it since, whether it is modeled differently, if it has a GUI/what it looks like. Really people are like trying to fly an invisible plane by making arguments about whether it is good or bad.
