Animal Breeding: Un-****ing-finished. Stop whining about unfinished ****.
Except, a lot of posters are suggesting that the mechanic IS finished, and that Phar should just "make a mod" rather than pointing out its ineherent flaws. At this point, Phar became "right" in comparison to these posters who were clearly wrong, and now, he has something to whine about.
I still wonder if a low complexitiy ecological simulation could be implemented in a sandbox game. More of a theoretical thought here, as it would need some serious coding and hardcore lots af testing and balancing ( I think it would be cool as a mod)
So what am I talking about ?
I'm talking about continuously growing/spreading everything(vines, tall grass, etc.) which then is eaten by mobs.
Mobtype / biome shouldn't be able to drop below 1, so if you kill off everything, there would be a respawn, also it should hav a max limit. That would produce continuous changing look of the landscape, in a way that wouldn't be overkill, since it would mostly alter looks.
Also let wolves attack sheeps, pigs and chickens, so Farmmobs are not always present at max count.
I think it would be nice to see mobs eat and get eaten :laugh.gif:
"I think I already replied to that. You're more than welcome to claim any of those statements if it's not complete speculation without any proof." -Phar
Parton me, I am simple providing criticism on your op build.
I support the fact that you think animal breeding is over simplified.
Therefore, I support the idea of increasing the amount of people who support your idea.
You decrease your chances of having supports when you tell them flat out tell them what to post, and
when you insult a certain aspect of a game they like.
,but I suppose because you built your post I came along, and said something was wrong with it, you grew offended, and began treating me with attitude when I have been nothing but nice to you.
No matter, I apologize for "insulting" you ,and take my leave. I wish you luck.
If I'm reading conversations at the modding channel correctly, it's actually exactly this -- the wheat sets the target of the entity to the player. Animals follow like monsters, but they don't actually have any attack abilities.
EDIT: Wave some wheat at a snow golem. They sometimes will actually start throwing snowballs at you.
EDIT2: Same deal when the two animals start mating. Try to breed snow golems, they'll start trying to snowball each other.
Excellent point, since Snow Golems throw snowballs upon becoming hostile, rather than following.
I hope they keep this, I'd love to watch two Snow Golems fight. You could set them up on an island in a lava pool and see which one survives longest. Or maybe they'd become locked in an eternal struggle. -.o
Same arguement could just be turned right around onto you. Not a smart move to make most of the time.
Proof of what? I'm not arguing if it's finished or not, I'm simply stating my opinion on the current state. If you want to refute it with "Unfinished" arguments, state your source.
Seems like I tried to discourage arguments involving claims like this, and yet there's more than usual.
I think the problem is that people see something added with an update or prerelease and assume that what's just been added is 100% complete and that testing and development won't continue on said feature. A lot of the time, I'm seeing stuff added that lays the groundwork for future features or implementations and then people come on here and gripe about it being lazy. You have to start somewhere, though, and sometimes it's better to get feedback when developing a feature while you're testing out that foundation.
It also doesn't help your argument or in any way make people want to take you seriously if you approach the problem by insulting the developer and then claiming you're just offering suggestions. You can make suggestions without using the words "lazy" or "half-assed" and amazingly people are far more likely to accept it as actual suggestions and not simply write you off as yet another disgruntled, whiny entitlement *****.

Heh, it's funny as heck to watch them try to fight, but the fights don't last very long because the animal's "run away when hurt" behavior quickly kick in.
I like you. Got any proof that it's unfinished, besides your assumptions?
Link me a post/tweet from Mojang where they say Breeding is finished. Until then, it's beta, and it's an unfinished feature. They said breeding was added, but never that it was finished.
Everything is unfinished until November 18th, when you can finally say if it's implemented, it's finished.

Like I said, I'm not arguing if it's finished or not, I'm making suggestions based on the current state of it. Not really up to wasting my time replying to people who use the "unfinished" argument without proof.
A handful of unpaid modders coding in their spare time produced The Aether in five months, a new completely stable and coherent game, a realm complete with an entirely new biome generation, a whole host of new mobs, new dungeons with worthwhile bounty and rewards, bosses which are interesting to fight, rideable and tameable mounts, an avalanche of new useful blocks with new special characteristics, and cool new items and weapons out the whazoo.
In five months. A coherent and full gaming experience. Five months.
Mojang, with all of their millions and millions of dollars and nothing to do but make video games, has done what of significance in the past nine months? Copied the piston mod and Better Light mods from other coders, added a realm with nothing in it, added strongholds which have nothing in them, added a couple new mobs, added some new food types, and added colored wool. Released incomplete update after incomplete update.
Took them nine months to do that. And we are nowhere near a full gaming experience.
In short: Mojang has the creativity of a 5 year old and can't code ****.
Heh, it's funny as heck to watch them try to fight, but the fights don't last very long because the animal's "run away when hurt" behavior quickly kick in.
Hmm... Wouldn't this cause them both to race toward the lava surrounding them..?

Doesn't it get old posting the same tired ole nelly post? You got a lil something on your nose from being so far up the Aether modders behind, lemme wipe it off for ya.
True, I wouldn't shed tears if anything I say isn't implemented, I just feel Mojang has the ability to make a better feature than they current have. In my opinion.
Also, googling Harvest Moon :3
Harvest Moon is a long running series of games on many platforms that focus on farming and caring for animals. I played one of them many years ago, but haven't kept up with the franchise. So I have no idea how in depth they've made it. It also has an element of making friends and(usually) finding a wife.
I'm sure they could make the features better, but in some respects I don't think making it overly complex is at all a good idea. Minecraft has been enjoyable because it has been simple. Easy to play and easy to get into, but with enough depth that people can do complex things with the simpler parts. Like the nutters who make redstone processors, harvesting machines and other such craziness.
Any breeding system should be simple to use and should blend with that aesthetic. I hope the coming potions and enchantment system are likewise simple. Because there really are other games for people who want to delve into complex modes of play.
I will say, the way you can spam things is a bit crazy. But the issue is deciding just how much you want to throttle it down. Balance is an odd thing in a game like this.
Seems like I tried to discourage arguments involving claims like this, and yet there's more than usual.
Yes, the title was provocative
If you only read the title, and not the above paragraph and end up posting some useless form of gibberish like such, your reply will be ignored, and I'll most likely 1-Star your account to boost my ego and feel like there's some point to life. Now, without further a due, on to the thread!
That seems as "discouraging" as laying out fresh hot cookie trails for four year old kids with a sign at the end which says "Don't eat the cookies or you get spanked" :laugh.gif:
This argument is pretty old and still comes from a complete lack of understanding of what goes into developing a game. Try to justify it all you want and copy and past the same tired statements over and over again and you're still comparing apples and oranges.

True, for a maximum of 4 days work, I doubt I could do it.

Cept the animal following thing. Adding a item is just kinda preference. But making it so they don't follow you like you're jesus is on the mark.

... I'll get back on topic now.
