I think this is something a lot of serious server admins need an answer to. Is the terrain generation going to be completed in 1.9? Or, at least to a point a full map reset isn't required for 1.10 and beyond?
I, and a lot of other good server admins out there really need to know. I'm sure it's no big deal for the kiddie admins who really don't take running a server seriously, but for people like me, it's a very important issue that needs addressed.
My server has been around since 1.2, and up until 1.7.3 there really has been no issues with the minor changes to map generation (IE: tall grass, pumpkins, changing flower generation, fixing the biome code so chunks line up, etc). All this is fine, and doesn't drastically change the layout of the core map. But, with the new 1.8 generation system that totally changed again in 1.9pr will we be seeing it all change again in 1.10?!
I have no problem with small additions to the map as I stated, it's the total seed altering ones that bother me. I absolutely LOVE the new biomes, they're awesome! So don't get me wrong. But my server is in a state of limbo right now waiting for 1.9 to be released so we can move into our (hopefully) final map. We already left our old 1.7 map behind, and we're playing on a 1.8 freebuild map we all know will be deleted and replaced with our final(?) 1.9 map. But my players are very concerned about .9 and .10. If the map generation system won't be finalized until .10 that's fine. But a more solid answer would be nice.
So, is there any more information out there about the terrain generation system? Is Notch done? Did he ditch the volcano biome idea? I, and many other serious server admins need these answers. We can't sit here forever with our players always wondering if their stuff we get wiped patch after patch until Botch gets his terrain system straight.
Notch needs to be more verbal with his plans, if he's not done with the system, he needs to tell us.

Don't reply to my post, lazy ****.
Well unless I misunderstood, he said any serious coding and development stops October 18th, just bug fixes after that while they prepare for the full on launch. My guess is that's when they aim to get 1.9 out the door, or we get 1.9 in a few days and 1.10 like he mentioned on the 18th. Probably a good bet that come then, you're safe to make a full on perma map, but that's just my guess.

I read that just a while ago, what I may end up doing is leaving my server running 1.8 until October 18th just to be safe. It would be a shame to see Notch start adding to the biome system after the freeze is over though. (..and it would be a very poor decision on his part)
He's a bit unclear on his code freeze stuff though, although I would assume a safe bet would be the code will be finalized by the code freeze.

Usually map generation code is changed for a reason.. to be more efficient, and i dont think you are right to say adding more biomes to the game would be a bad decision, it boils down to this is still a beta and you need to be ready to accept that drastic changes can and will be made from time to time. And you dont necessarily have to abandon your old maps.. just use a tool to convert the map to be compatible with the new map generation
Do you think it is likely that notch will add the rainforest biome back into the game?
It is my theory that he will. So this likely means (at least) one more terrain generator change. The original rainforest biome contained unique ferns as a replacement of tall grass, which currently don't exist in minecraft terrain generation. Also, cocoa trees are typically found in rainforests and there is currently no tree to grow cocoa beans yet.
There are also several other biomes that were present in 1.7.3 that are not currently used.
(Savannah, shrubland, seasonal forest) Tundra and Taiga were replaced in 1.9pre with frozen plain and the pine forests, but could also be changed. (especially since snowfall is buggy in 1.9pre)
People have also been complaining about the size of oceans and frozen plain biomes being too large.
In short there are likely still improvements that could be made to world generation, so be prepared if it changes a few times before release.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
When no one was looking, the Endermen took forty blocks.
They took 40 blocks. That’s as many as four tens. And that’s horrible.

Well, lets hope that whatever the state of the biomes are by October 18th is indeed the final version. Changing the generation system isn't a big deal for the single player guys (or the kiddie servers) but it's a huge deal for us server admins. :/
The server where I play has a "no exploring" rule precisely for this reason - to avoid generating chunks until this mess settles. We didn't even go to 1.8 because of how incomplete it was.
We are looking forward to 1.9, but the "no exploring" rule might remain in effect if the biome generation code is still in flux.
Besides, I remember reading Notch's post about the freeze... and it said it would only freeze for a month. We don't know what he's planning on changing after that. Hopefully once the game is fully released (was it Nov?) he will stop the massive changes. I look forward for when minor changes come once a quarter and major changes only once a year.

Well, my server is unique in the fact we use a "Zone system". In a nutshell, the map is separated into 60 build zones with ground-level bedrock walls worldedited into place (//replace 7 along the wall that basically 1:1 swaps all existing non-air blocks with bedrock). Each zone is owned solely by the person who selects it.
Problem is, when members leave the server their zones are reset (Chunks deleted via MCEdit and regenerated) and their zone is up for grabs for the next new player to join our community. But, thats where this mess becomes a problem. If I were to reset one of my zones on my old 1.7 map, it would regenerate the new 1.8 version of that zone.. so there's this funky 300x300 square (thats how big our zones are) on my map that doesn't line up with it's neighboring zones.
So, what we did was setup a special transient building to "relocate" with, and we all spent a week gathering our things and moving into the new building, then, once completed, we started a brand new 1.8 freebuild map and I MCEdited the building into our new map. Now, we're all sitting on the 1.8 freebuild map just enjoying 1.8 content until we can finally move again into our old zone system with our transient building on a brand new 1.9 (or .10) map and start over.
This is why it's a huge issue for us, maybe even larger than it is for other servers out there because of our zone system. We're all basically trapped in limbo while we just freebuild for fun and fill our storage chests with 1.8 goodies for the eventual day we move to 1.9/1.10 (What we have dubbed as "SixtyGig 3.0" on our server).
(warning: Rant ahead! :smile.gif: )
Sigh, it sucks. But Notch should of finalized the biome system before 1.8 or left it out of 1.8 entirely, regardless of how long it took. This breaking it up between patches is absolutely moronic. a 10 year old could easily tell you that something so serious should not of been broken down into separate updates. If the new system wasn't completed by 1.8, it should of been removed until it was finally completed and the entire system as a whole should of been put in for 1.9, .10, .66, or whatever. When it was ready.
It's just more proof that while Notch is a fair programmer, he's a moronic and immature developer with no direction; like a bored kid with ADD. He just does whatever he wants whenever he wants and has no follow through to finish anything he gets bored with, with no regard to what makes sense to be completed in a timely manner.
For example, he added snowmen mobs because he was bored? Grow up notch, you're getting paid to make this game and you don't have a day job interfering with your work like half the mod community that pumps out code faster than you can. Finish the critical stuff first (like biomes being half completed), then play around with fun/neat features.

here is a suggestion that could ease your issues:
generate a virgin map
keep this map as a backup
when you need to replace once of your zones, you copy the virign territory over to the server, thereby preserving the landscape.

While that works, that would forever leave my entire server's zones in a state of constantly being trapped in "1.7" chunks. My members would never see the benefits of the new terrain (like mineshafts, strongholds, villages, new biomes, etc)
In the short term, it would work. In the long term it would doom my server. Why would new members join just to play on an outdated map?

I understand the desire to have a consistent map. However, I also feel that changing the map generation is nessecary for the game to advance. Even after release, it would be a real stranglehold on what they coudl do if they were told "You cannot modify the world generation". I would not count on world generation being steady until all development of the game is halted, which will nto be till well after release.
Hopefully we get an answer, this in my opinion warrants a direct answer from devs. After the fiasco of mc-editing all main buildings that have been generated since 1.3, and re-doing all functional travel systems etc. when 1.8 came out, hours, and hours, and loss of sleep spent doing it then BAM yeah you gotta do it again in 1.9, oh and there will be a 1.10 as well... I'm just going to assume due to track record, and the fact that there is an entire month till "full release version", and that they are calling it a "version" that we are boned. Until I hear otherwise im sticking with 1.8 until full release.
Playing beta is cool and all, but when you charge people to play, you have to take in to account they are paying customers, not fanboy beta testers. A little more courtesy would be appreciated.
Edit:@Mystify I see no reason why they can't take the time in the future to patch biome changes to take effect in an already generated world, they have done it in past updates.

I'm ok with handling the BS of new maps every once and a while during beta, but once we're retail I don't think they should be doing anything that would warrant total map resets. Imagine if you were playing Sim City and suddenly your huge mega city was so broken that playing it any further would be pointless, and your only option is to completely start over? ..then they did this every few months? The fans would be in an uproar.
I see no reason why MC should be treated differently.

How are they supposed to make an underwater expansion if they can't touch the world generation?
personally, i'd strongly suggest you keep playing on the freebuild map until full release
as another poster stated, they will be in code freeze (just bugfixes, nothing new) until then, however it's possible that terrain generation will change as there's still numerous "bugs" in it
i somehow doubt notch will alter the terrain generation to any massive degree again after release, but you always have to keep that in mind and have yourself prepared
I think there's something wrong with your adminning and playerbase if you believe that only 'little kiddie admins' would be ok with semi-regular map resets.
That's not what I meant, what I meant was the "kiddie admins" are the ones who just make rash decisions on a whim like massive map resets (even when it's not required) without any forethought in the matter. For a good admin, a little bit of thought and consideration should be put into the effort.
The "kiddie admin" will say "KEKE kool. imo run mi server as 1.9PR bcuz I don't wanna waite! byebye server map! teh players will understand!!!"
The mature admin will go "Crap, I have to reset the map again? Well. I guess I'll see how the community feels about it then when the time comes, I'll make the switch once a stable release of the next patch is out. Time to make a game plan! *opens up notepad and starts jotting down plans*"
Also stop referring to yourself as 'a good server admin' or whatever.
Everybody has their own preferred method of managing a server, your methods do not have to be superior to the methods of other people that manage a server. (People stick with a server that is managed in a way they like anyway.)
I never said my methods are superior than all the admins, just superior to the kiddies. There's many servers out their that are managed with logic and reason, all managed their own ways that cater to their own player base. I'm not saying my way is superior to all of them, I'm saying my way is superior to the kiddies servers. If thats arrogant, so be it. There's a reason my player base is 100% griefer free with absolutely no plugins restricting items, block placement or theft.

If there's problems with the biome terrain code, you can expect a change even after October 18.
Stuff like "snow deletes rails" and "oops I forgot to add back roses and wolves"
I favour a periodic restart with a fresh world. Most people on our server do not mind trying their hand at building something new, settling in a different type of landscape, exploring new lands. So far the biggest complaints on our new 1.8 world have come from the one guy who stays at home all day and builds gigantic, impenetrable castles that blot out the sun and dominate the landscape. I don't think it took him long to discover that things change, and he lost no time in building a massive stone-brick castle bridging three mountain peaks.
As far as chunk border issues go, it sucks. People have found some creative ways of dealing with chunk stepoffs for instance. But like Notch said, keep in mind we should not encourage players to get attached to any one building, or world, or item, or element in the game.
Ray's server is intended for that very type of person who builds massive structures, alone or in a group, since each person get's their own 'sandbox' reserved for them.
The issue comes when you have 40-ish of those players all lumped together, investing time in a map that will either be dropped completely for a new one, or 'cut-n-pasted' into something where the surrounding terrain is completely off-kilter.
Big-omes are worth it, but each successive 'reset' is just a bit demoralizing. Obviously, we'll get over it. We just wish we didn't have to.

How are they supposed to make an underwater expansion if they can't touch the world generation?
as another poster stated, they will be in code freeze (just bugfixes, nothing new) until then, however it's possible that terrain generation will change as there's still numerous "bugs" in it
i somehow doubt notch will alter the terrain generation to any massive degree again after release, but you always have to keep that in mind and have yourself prepared
Simple, he doesn't. At least not in the degree we saw between 1.7 -> 1.8 -> 1.9..
If it's like what we've seen between 1.2 -> 1.7 thats fine. Those are minor changes that do not change the *entire* seed into a complete new map.
But I think a completely new map due to massive generation changes should be completely off the table once the game is released.
