When I first heard about the Endermen, I was impressed, to say the least. At first I thought they would be horrible monsters that would tear down every one of our houses. Then the update comes out, I come home to my house and guess what I find? 3 Endermen, who have taken a total of 2 cobblestone blocks from my wall; can you guess what I did then? Instead of immediately deleting my world and running off to the forums to write 200 topics on how the Endermen are the worst idea ever and how I'm never going to play Minecraft again, I killed them, and replaced 2 blocks. It only took me around 2 seconds. My point is that Endermen are a great addition to the game, they add challenge and mystery. I don't need a stupid fake myth like Herobrine, or a shitty mod that adds "him", to the game in order to feel a sense that there is someone else out there. The Endermen add backstory to the game, they explain why dungeons, abandoned mines, NPC villages, and strongholds exist. They explain why Nether portals are 3 blocks high, their very presence in the world is explained by the absence of the Far Lands. Their building abilities make me feel like I've got something closer to an equal than a mindless creeper or skeleton, we shouldn't take their building away, we should improve it! We should allow them to build structures, not just random piles. I think it would be much more fun going up against an Endermen castle, then walking across a pile of dirt. I'm just tired of all these people who are constantly whining about how Endermen are destroying their entire castles, they're either too lazy to build a wall and maintain it, or even to just put a moat around their house. I swear Endermen are the weakest mob ever, sun, water, rain, fire, and lava all hurt them. They're easier to kill than pigs, because pigs can run away. Are we really taking away challenge and diversity for something as retarded as Mooshrooms? It's like Notch is slowly taking all challenge away from this game, and steering it towards 8 year-olds who delete their world every time a creeper blows up.
For those who can't survive the highly dangerous reading, here's the short version:
Notch is giving into whiners and destroying a great ability of a new mob, so they will be rendered pretty much pointless. In the process dumbing the game down to oblivion.
Maybe I'm over-reacting, maybe no one will care what I say, maybe everyone here will flame me, maybe people will like the game when it's just simply less mysterious, maybe when the nerf comes, it won't completely destroyed. But I just had to say this. Does anyone agree with me?
I agree completely. It takes no effort to kill an enderman and replace one block. It makes them unique and can give extra challenge.
In fact, I haven't even seen a single enderman stealing a single block from my village, which does not have a wall or even a fence.
The only reason you could complain is if you built a house out of diamond blocks, but then it's your fault for being so stupid and not protecting it.

Or, you could slightly change the topic of this thread so that your current discussion fits.
Everyone has seen the very numerous threads bashing the various features of 1.9, Notch, Mojang, etc. Can we turn down the hating? Just a little bit? Sure, everyone may not be pleased with enchanting, or potions, but really, is it at all realistic to expect that Notch will undo his work from the past several weeks and take these features out? One, that would infuriate far more players than it might pacify, and two, something like that is completely unprecedented in a game as popular as Minecraft. Complete feature removal? Forget about it. Nobody is forcing you to use enchantments and potions.
.
Adding an XP bar does NOT, I repeat NOT turn Minecraft into an RPG. An RPG, to quote the dictionary, is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting and take those characters through a structured narrative or structured decision making.
.
Fantasy elements are often found in RPGs, but the reverse is NOT true. Fantasy != RPG. XP bar + minor fantasy elements does not and WILL NEVER equal an RPG in Minecraft, since Minecraft is completely devoid of a plot whatsoever.
.
Finally, at the end of the day, you have to give Notch and Mojang some credit for what they have accomplished. Minecraft has over 3 million users. If Mojang was making bad gameplay decisions, why is Minecraft one of the most popular video games of all time? Because Mojang knows what they are doing. The success of Minecraft is testament to it.
.
tl;dr: If you cannot come up with a completely valid reason for claiming that 1.9 ruins Minecraft, please keep your mouth shut.
He's nerfing the block-taking ability, not removing it, so it shouldn't be a problem. I assume he's making it so Endermen don't take away stuff like redstone or pistons. I still think they should take player-placed blocks, though.
exactly. notch, please for ****s sake appeal to the people who dont bitchfit about creepers. i want some scary ass mobs who will eat your ****ing soul! not little unteleportung shittards.

I agree, Endermen do little damage to creations, and when they do, you can easily replace it. On the topic of "Notch is taking all the challenge away from this game," I STRONGLY agree. I've died in minecraft TWICE since I got it.
I wouldn't them being able to move more (or even only) player placed blocks, as long as they don't ever ruin trees and put leaves everywhere for no reason since I can protect my buildings, but not the entire world.
I also agree they are weak as hell and should have their healh / damages buffed.
However, I don't think they add any backstory to the game. I mean, you say portals are 3 tall, but also that they might have build strongholds / mineshafts, etc that are designed for 2 blocks tall entities.
And also, if people don't agree with you, it doesn't mean they are 8 years old and whining all day. There were serious reasons for people to complain, and I think Notch understood this.
Little damage to creations? No way. I hold a permanent grudge agains the block moving ability after they destroyed half my redstone gizmos by removing a block from my TNT cannon.

I never said people that disagreed with me were 8 years old, I said that the level of difficulty that this game is being lowered to is for 8- year olds.
The question is: Why is it such a good thing to have your creations destroyed? Do you hate them or something? Do you like playing the janitor to the wreckage they leave?
The biggest problem is that they do it without needing our interaction. It's an unnecessary punishment for just playing the game. Sure we can Enderman-proof our structures, but why should we have to? We don't Creeper-proof our structures. Creepers don't go around exploding for no reason. If we tick off the creeper they react. Similarly the Enderman ability should only be used when we catch their eyes.
Another problem is that they are deleting the world. They don't drop the blocks they pick up if they die or despawn. This means that at any moment random blocks below the ground are being deleted. Not picked up and moved but deleted. The work it can take to get some blocks makes this a very bad thing. They could be picking up diamond gold and other rare blocks and deleting them.
Now, do they need to stop picking up blocks? No. Like you said they could be expanded upon and fixed rather than just not build. For example: They might seek out certain blocks for structures that they are programmed to build. While passive they won't take any blocks that they don't need or blocks that have blocks on top of them (to prevent them from hurting trees or player walls to an extent). While angered they can pick up anything and will move any block to get to the player. If they die they drop the block they picked up.
Tada it now is not a griefer nor has its ability been removed. Only refined and they need refinement, because they don't add challenge to the game. They only make us clean up their mess while they slowly delete the world, which is bad for a game about building things.
If they went about it intelligently, I wouldn't have a problem with it. But they don't punch holes in your defenses to get at you, they just randomly move blocks around. It's stupid.
Like I've said before, I find it hilarious how many people are up in arms about endermen being nerfed (when they don't really add anything to the game at the moment due to being completely half-assed) but all hell breaks loose and the griefer accusations start flying the moment another player so much as looks at your house in SMP.

Ok let me correct myself, you insinuated that people complaining about endermen were 8 years old :smile.gif:
And let me add: Has minecraft ever been hard? I think the new skeletons (I mean their better aim) and cave spiders are the most challenging (but still easy to fight) and they were added/changed recently. Was it harder before? I don't think so, and I hope the new nether mobs will bring some challenge :smile.gif:
Its actually very simple... Notch can simply have endermen target player placed blocks on survival. Then add an exception so they can pick up and place non-player placed blocks like; dirt, flowers, mushroom, pumpkin, melon, sand, mycelium, gravel, grass, clay, netherrack, soul sand, ice, and cactus.
Heck he could even add it so the enderman pick up and place blocks every 9 minutes.
So many things could be done with the enderman, or even with a new mob like the enderman. But with all the nerfs, Notch is just making them seem useless.

He's completely removing it:

It's 2nd from the top change.
Notch stated he nerfed the ability, the wiki must of documented it incorrectly.
This is an absolutely perfect discussion of what to do during Endermen attack:
