Notch has made a unique game, that can be played as a sandbox, where you can ignore everything but the building concept, or a more adventurous styled version. And yes, the game is riddled with problems, such as incomplete items and unbalanced game-play, etc. But it's still beta, where it's NOT ALL COMPLETE. Just because it isn't here now, doesn't mean that it won't ever be here.
But, Notch has never strayed from his ideals on Minecraft. He said about a year ago, that he would like to make the game more interesting.(Interesting= ADDING ITEMS, BRINGING MORE PURPOSE[which means A STORY LIKE ELEMENT], MAKING MORE CHALLENGES, ETC.) And a month or two ago, he said that he'd be adding an Adventure game-play style, to where the player could experience something with a plot/story. And just because it has a plot/story, DOES NOT mean that it will take over the WHOLE GAME. There'd be multiple stories, that don't take 5-10 hours of no-lifing to finish.
So, Notch has never stayed from his Ideals, all he did is evolve them.
Notch kept the "slay monsters, build, mine, survive, etc." and all the other original concepts to it, so it never became diluted. All he did is give the player more things to occupy themselves with. And isn't that the point of ANY game? To make something that an average person can occupy themselves with? [Rhetorical question]
Notches basic Idea is to give the beta-testers something small to play with, while he works on the big stuff. And some of small stuff has hints and traces of thing that will be put in the big stuff. So he's putting hints of big stuff into the small, so that he can understand what's wrong and fix it, so that the big things don't work like crap when he first releases them.
I think this is what has made MineCraft so popular. The laid back style with new updates popping up here and there. I'm happy with 1.9 and it seems many others are.
Not everyone is happy on how people run a company or produce a game but that's life. Mojang does what they do best: making MineCraft.. MineCraft.
Honestly i have a mixed feeling towards how mine craft is going. I think that the "creative" mode is over doing it, but adding content is what keeps this game going, if Notch had released the game when it was finished then not as many people would play it. i also think that there is to much loot to plunder in the mineshafts but thats just me. I think that by adding critical hits, Notch has made the game much easier. But by adding new mobs and new biomes Notch is making the right desision because that means there is more to explore and do. I honestly think that if you dont like minecraft the way its turning out then DONT UPDATE! if you havent made backups of your minecraft then its your fault you have a game you dont like, Not notch. I stopped updating after 1.4_1 until the Adventure update because it had interesting additions. I kept a backup of 1.4_1 and it turns out I do like 1.8 so i keep that version. I think that if you find the game getting easier then get mods that make it harder. The game overall hasent gotten easier just you guys are getting good at it. I do hope that notch will change the tnt back to being activated via fist instead of redstone. perhaps a different solution instead but overall my opinion is that Minecraft is getting slightly off track but doesnt mean it wont find its way back.
Im not sure, if it will be possible to play while ignoring xp and hunger. has notch said anything to indicate this?
Concerning the "business advice". Mojang became sucessful, because they created a unique game. If they change their game into something closer to mainstream gaming, and do that in a mediocre faashion, they will have to compete with the "big boys". Which wont be be easy....
Bukkit has already confirmed you can mod hunger and XP, there are already non-bukkit mods to disable XP.
They don't have to compete with anyone. Your reasoning for not adding more content is because they will have to compete? Again, your business logic astounds me.
If all you want to do is build, then do it. Turn the SMP to peaceful, and/or disable XP and hunger. If you want to explore then explore. If you want a true sandbox, then play creative.
Just because there is more content, it doesn't mean you can't play the game how you want to.
And if you REALLY can't stand it, and are too incompetent to make it work to your likings, then play a previous version. You aren't forced to update to 1.8, or 1.9. Find the 1.3-1.5 versions online, and have fun without your extra content. This game is Notch's vision, he made the game the way HE wanted it. It's an indie game, if it happens to catch on and people like it then awesome! He isn't here to cater to the masses and make everyone happy like large gaming corporations only out to make money.
If they abandon to focus on the unique aspects of their game and focus on run-of-the-mill gameplay, they will lose their main advantage. And it will become a problem, when they force the player to engage in run-of-the-mill gameplay. Whats illogical about this?
What unique aspects are they abandoning? They will never lose their advantage, name a competetor.
They aren't FORCING anyone to do anything as I've stated earlier. You can play Minecraft HOWEVER you want. You can play any version. You can play peaceful mode, disable mods, disable hunger/xp, sandbox, creative, SMP, hardcore. That doesn't sound run-of-the-mill, that sounds extremely diverse.
The main issue is that Mojang is spreading itself too thin. It tried to make mineshafts, strongholds, villages, and NPCs all in a single patch. Instead of maybe making mineshafts perfect in 1.8, strongholds perfect in 1.9, and the like, we'll see them 'Finished' in 2.1, strongholds in 2.4, villages in 2.0, and NPCs in 2.8 and in the mean time we'll see dozens of half-baked ideas added in while we wait. I mean I have no problem with more foilage and ways to flesh out the world but right now it's terribly inconsistent.

Again, it's their preferred method. Shotgun approach, get a bunch in and polish up ... or do one at a time. If people don't like the way it's done, then wait to upgrade until the features you want are finished. I knew full well going into 1.8 that it was only half of the adventure update, and that it was a buggy half. Same with 1.9, it still isn't finished and has lots of issues.
I CHOSE to install 1.8 and 1.9. I didn't feel a gun against my temple.
They are adding experience, skills, hunger, all of which may have an effect on how this game is played ( i dont have absolute evidence for this, but im worried that it may), and it may change the audience that this game will appeal to.
Omg, are you Hellen Keller? You don't HAVE to play with things like skills, xp and hunger. You act like every single server in the world will have these all enabled.
Therefore they kind of abandon the formula, that made minecraft such a great game. And they do that 2 months before the planned release date, so there will be little time to test.
"The forumla"? Is that another business term? Where did Notch post the formula for Minecraft?
And of course they are not forcing me to do anything. I'm just stating my opinion on what the devs want to do with minecraft.
If you don't like the new features, that's fine. But your claims are outlandish, unjustified and without proper bias. You are claiming it will ruin the game, claiming it will effect how the game is played, statements to which neither have any actual backing. You are commenting on features that are still being pre-released tested.
I'm not saying everyone has to like 1.8/1.9, but to say "it's ruining the game" is saying you have no other options. That you are forced to play with these new features. That simply isn't true.
If you have so much of a problem with bugs then don't play minecraft until it comes out. Until then, expect an unfinished game to have some bugs. Expecting any game of any format to be 100% perfect in beta is stupid :l
My claims are not outlandish at all. I've played on servers with experience mod, i have seen, what the hunger system does, and for me it doesnt improve the game at all.
SURPRISE! Then don't play 1.8 ... you are complaining about all the new features, that are in 1.8 and 1.9. DON'T PLAY 1.8 OR 1.9. It's quite simple.
Instead i felt distracted from the core gameplay. I dont like the idea, that my performance in the game depends on how many experinence orbs i have collected, not my actual skill.
The "core" of SMP: SURVIVAL. If you don't want the survival aspect, turn it on peaceful or play creative. Don't play 1.8 until Bukkit is finished, and then you can disable anything that isn't part of your "formula" or "core", which by the way are standards YOU are setting for the game not Notch.
So we are down to the "then dont play the game" argument again. Well id rather play the game and not be dependant on mods. Why is that an invalid opinion?
Let me dumb this down for you.
If you don't want to play with Endermen: DON'T PLAY WITH ENDERMEN
If you don't want to play with hunger or XP: DON'T PLAY WITH HUNGER OR XP
If you don't want to play with any new 1.8-1.9 features: DON'T PLAY WITH THOSE FEATURES
I can turn my server on right now and play 1.7.3 for the next 37 years. No one is forcing anything on you.
I've always loved your mods and I'm glad you made this point. You never beta test for a game that is adding idea after idea because that would slow the process down. You test for a game that is 98% complete (some features may be added in depending on feedback) because that way your not getting little chunks of features to test every other day.
It makes no sense to test for a beta that just adds new features every month because.
1: It slows the process down
2: The end result will have more moving parts (all the features) and you'll have to test that all parts are working together.
The game seems like it is still in development (because it is) rather than us beta testing a finished product.
I dunno it would seem weird if someone asked me to dry a car and when I drove it I found out it only went up to 2nd gear, when I ask "Why does it only go to second gear" they explained that they hadn't finished it yet and it was still in development.
*facepalm* You dumb ass... He's creating new content that is easy to make, like snow golems, to keep the players interested while he's working on the bigger stuff. So don't go around saying "Notch isn't doing ****" when he's just trying to make you happy.
C'mon bro you know you can't facepalm and type at the same time.
@OP, I haven't seen many of your posts, but I do remember seeing you in a few threads. From what I remember, you wrote constructively (as you did in this post). Honestly it's really amusing how people who would do anything for Mojang freak out about constructive feedback. +1.
After all, everyone has the right to voice their opinion. This is a forum for Minecraft discussion. I'm sure Mojang likes feedback, and even if they ultimately don't, most of us gave them our money. We've got the right to talk about the game.
I won't say I'm a great writer, but I try to take time to write constructively. Sometimes it doesn't work too well though.
I understand their love for the game, it is the fanatical attitudes that scare me.
Just a tip about making a point...
Try not to insult those who hold an opinion different than yours. All that does is to put up a big neon sign saying "Those who disagree with my opinion are wrong for the simple fact that they disagree with me."
Insults, dismissiveness and belittlement are not ways to get a point across. Period. The only thing you do is to mark yourself as a self-righteous idiot and no one will take you seriously unless they already agree with you.
I said it was an example bro. Child please is a statement chad ochocinco makes as a jest or a joke. Honestly if someone writes that I'm a dumbass or that I'm an idiot and that I should expect bugs I will of course brush them off with a joke because their opinion means nothing because it isn't even relevant to the post I wrote.
I have little tolerance for self-righteousness and imposing ignorance. The level of stupidity in OP's post is extremely overwhelming. It amazes me how many people don't realize that this game in its state will indefinitely have bugs. It's called beta. Complaining about unfinished things is infinitely moronic... to a completely whole new level.
Your opinion is really useless and small.
At this point I'mma just respond to these comments with jersey shore gifs.
Broski you didn't even read my post, (or title for that matter) because I said I understand that there will be bugs. I focus on game design rather than bugs.
jeb and notch are the only ones working on minecraft. They have to do everything unlike bigger companies wich can have about 20-30 people on one project (counting possible voice actors wich minecraft has none). But most importantly if you dont like 1.8/1.9 dont play it simple as that good day sir!

Hey, I’ve got a good idea for all those haters out there, why don’t you invent your own game and start your own company and do it ten times better!
Seriously, you bought this game when it was still in alpha or beta and all you do is whine about it. how many games have hundreds of glitches/bugs when they release (big games who sell for millions and millions) [rhetorical question]
exactly, all of them... so perhaps you shouldn’t be saying how they should run the company, but you better just say what the bugs are and eventually, the game will be much better
I never understood this argument. So I can only critique a game if I have actually made one myself? That is easily the silliest counter argument known to man. I can critique an athletes performance despite the fact that I can never play on their level. You wouldn't have the type of industry if that were true.
Honestly you didn't even read my post so what right do you have to respond? If I cannot critique notch because I've never made a game then you shouldn't be able to critique my opinion because you didn't even read my post. Logical inconsistency broksi.
I *guarantee* you that if you go play a game like Fallout 3 during a time when it's only like half finished, what you get is this hideous, jumbled mess. Game development is like that.
The difference is, games like Fallout 3 are pretty much NEVER available to the player during true development. What most developers call "beta" is actually "Well the game is basically FINISHED, but we need to test for final bugs, balance, and server load".
With MINECRAFT, "beta" really does mean "not even feature complete yet".
And to the OP....
Really, DONT complain about things "not having a reason" when the game ISNT finished. The EXP bar? Has a reason, yes. It'll be in full effect in an upcoming update. Same with all of the new items that dont do anything yet. The code for that stuff was added probably because it was simply the correct time to do so. As for why stuff like Mooshrooms are in there? Notch and team have a good sense of humor, and unlike many on this forums (no, I'm not specifically referring to the OP here, I mean in general) they also have a good sense of FUN.
So how is there an exception to the rule with minecraft? I dunno shouldn't beta be consistent from label to label? You kind of contradicted yourself there by stating that it is testing a finished game, but with minecraft it is testing a game that isn't finished... or that is still in development.
Second point.
Why add it then, why have it in the game? Release it when it's finished don't sit there and waste time adding it to an update if it isn't finished. Focus on releasing the features that work. For the bold part I guess I find subtle humor (WoW has a great sense of this) more funny than "Heres a mushroom laugh". To explain WoW has man pop culture reference that you will only get if you know about them or look. It makes the game more fun to try and find these things. Honestly I guess giant mushrooms is funny, but for me it is too in your face or trying to force you to laugh rather than being subtle.

Limbo and Braid two of the best indie games and both were made by one guy (I believe I may be wrong). They were focused and stuck true to their vision. Yes they're different genres but we are talking indie developers. Bold part is just silly. I never said I didn't like it, if I didn't like it I wouldn't write about it. I don't like eating beets, and because I don't like eating beets I don't go out of my way to try and make them edible.

Also good job for watching a completely scripted "reality" show.
To finish your lifetime goal set in the begining of gameplay. other than that... Die.
