The goal of this petition is to demonstrate to the company that produces Minecraft (hereafter named 'Mojang') that the users of Minecraft are invested in obtaining an increase in the vertical limit of the map, i.e obtaining the ability to build above the limit of natural terrain generation. Arguments in favor of this Petition
1) While it is understood that the process of creating additional chunks above the height limit of the map would increase the amount of memory used by Minecraft, the change proposed above would not necessitate the creation of chunks across the entire area of the map. Such a change would only require the ability of the game to form new chunks as needed in response to the actions of the player (ie, attempting to place a block on level 129).
2) Increasing the height limit would enable the user to create structures currently unsupported by Minecraft, such as scale models of certain buildings, or constructions built atop mountainous terrain features.
3) The amount of additional memory consumed by the game would be passively determined by the user, and would not increase the overall memory load so long as blocks are not placed above the limit of naturally generated terrain.

This is a good idea, but I'd rather have a deeper undergound. I mean, it takes a person 10-20 minutes to make a 2 wide, 3 high staircase down to bedrock with a stone pickaxe. When I do this, I end up with 3-4 diamonds in less than an hour on a brand new world.
Well, if you could toggle it then I would say yes. It has been stated that it causes problems, though having the option to have a deeper underground & higher above ground would be quite nice as long as "you" can choose to have a map in that way.
It would make a bit of sense to have a maximum & a minimum lever in which you could input a series of figures to choose the size of the world. Go on an add my name if you decide to change it to something with a toggle option.

A living, thinking, speaking Pandora's Box; complexity at a simple rate.
Although I love this, there are a few more downs. If you mod it, and then posted it as a custom map, would it crash a person's minecraft who didn't mod it? If so then I will agree fully with you Feathers. But besides performance, another con is that Steve doesn't have maximum velocity, so if you jumped from above 128(i think it is) to bedrock, you would go faster than the chunks could generate, and cause major problems, such as falling into the void and seriously glitching out your game. It's not a simple fix to add this adjustable height in game, but I do like it. So here it is Feathers.
Yeah, i say Mojang should just stick the cubic chunk loader straight into the guts of minecraft! Maybe just a titch of field testing, and we're good to go (up to 32000 blocks high that is!). It has been my single greatest disappointment with minecraft that our height was a measly 128.
EDIT: I also believe that 256 meters below sea level, there should be a lava table, 32 blocks thick at a minimum. Below this monstrosity (which could only be burrowed through with buckets of water, a bunch of diamond pickaxes, and a wanton disregard for "subtle" hints), there would be increased chances of small lava pools, as well as greatly increased mineral spawns!
Any change to height limit is almost directly a similar % increase in memory usage.
IE: going from 128 to 129 blocks high will result in just under 1% extra RAM usage.
The current map format is 16x16 chunks, each containing a single vertical row of data. This vertical row currently is 128 blocks tall.
In order to match word sizes, this would need to go up by factors of 2, so the next choice is 256 blocks tall.
This means that the row size is now twice as large. This is double the memory footprint. Double the save size. Double the loading and saving times. Not to mention that you open up millions more blocks for rendering tasks.
There's already enough people whining about performance.

Its about time those whining noobs go get a better computer.
Seriously its 2011 and still unable to get a computer nice enough to run minecraft full power?
Yeah, I agree to all people that says that the height limit should be toggled. I want to see really High mounains, hills or deep oceans etc, not tiny bumps of easy-to-climb sort of thing.

The only way to increase the hieght to a level that can be coded properly would be doubleing the size, doubleing the chunks, doubleing the memory load. Just because there's no blocks there doesn't mean your computer doesn't have to render that there's alot of a transparent, non colideble block in that 128x128 space.
There have been so many threads proposing how this could be done WITHOUT increasing memory usage too much so ignore anyone who hauls out that old canard. One scheme for instance involves breaking up chunks vertically. The main issue is the recoding necessary....
Isn't there already a mod that changes the sky limit to like 65k?
When you go really high, you will also need to load more chunks around the player, so you can actually see further when you go higher, instead of just the 9 chuncks around you. This eats up lots of resources, and currently some ppl are already struggling with their computer.

Since you strike-through "not", I assume you consider this signed. Otherwise I fear your need to be clever has backfired.
Look for "Cubic Chunks"
