Maybe not a poodle, a sheepherder or guard dog will work
a Border Collie. but how would it herd sheep? how would you tell it where to herd them?
I had this idea a long time ago, joined to tell you what I thought of it. Sorry to dig up this old thread, though.
I had originally thought the border collie, too. Fine dogs, especially for herding, and excellent companions. I also had the idea of picking between a German shepherd or an Australian cattle dog. The dog would follow you around and do your typical helpful stuff, like whimpering/whining when it got dark enough for mods to start spawning, sending out warning barks when it sees a mod (which could also be a negative, should Notch decide that that would attract more mods to you), attacking mods (while maybe running from Creepers), and so on.
The way I see it, there could be a "call" button. When pressed, it calls the dog to you, which comes from wherever it is and stands in front of you, waiting for a command. Keeping with sheep herding dog tradition, it could be nothing more than a good whistle. I'd suggest that the dog can hear it from a little farther away than the jukebox sound travels, since dogs have good hearing. So, I'd say around 100 cubic blocks or so. Anyway, from there it could bring up a command menu, or you could just give it commands. Some commands I thought up:
Push: It would find the nearest minecart within its hearing distance and push it in the opposite direction from where you were, right up until the point where it can't hear you anymore, and then it would stop and wait for either a new command or for you to catch up. If for some reason it cannot push the cart any further, like something in the way or the end of the track, it would stop and come back to you immediately.
Herd: Would start herding all the animals within a certain radius of you. You could be animal-specific, telling it to herd just Sheep, Pigs, Cows, or Chickens. It could even be possible for them to herd neutral mobs, like the Zombie Pigmen from the Nether or Spiders during the daytime. I'd think like a checkbox system or something, where you check the type of animal you want herded and hit okay, and the dog begins its task. They'd start herding them into a moderately tight circle in front of you, and then you could use a tool to tell the dog where to move them to, like a shepherd's cane or something to that effect (perhaps crafted from sticks?).
Attack: Once the button is clicked, it gets down and starts growling, facing whatever direction your mouse points. You click on the thing you want attacked, and it attacks it and brings you whatever the defeated mob dropped. But since it can't in good mind be indestructible, you'd have to be careful making it attack things like Spiders and anything else that would fight back.
Retrieve: You tell the dog to go find something, and the dog either fetches it and brings it to you, or starts barking to draw you closer. You could have him retrieve minerals or something that you can't quite reach, or if you want to keep doing what you're doing but still want a dropped mineral or item. You could also tell them to look for things like ores, and if they find anything within their hearing distance, they'll start barking. If you don't come within a certain time, perhaps they'll return and keep barking and bounding off in the direction of the items until you start following. Particularly useful in underground caves, or if you just really need coal ore but are too lazy to go searching for it.
At the end of the day, the dog would follow you to your house. It could sleep the night away, perhaps in a doggie bed or something that could be crafted like half-block Stairs, only with sheep's wool. Or it could just sleep on the floor in front of something that gives off light/heat like a torch, fireplace, Brimstone, Jack-o-Lantern or the upcoming lanterns I've heard so much about (despite that Notch is denying that update happening now, apparently). You could feed it to heal its health, probably a slice of pork or two would be enough to heal it, cooked or raw. Perhaps dog treats could be another item.
Then, you know, anything else that's possible with a dog would be in here. You could play Fetch with sticks (or if something like a ball was added, that could be used), the dog could go swimming, it could ride in minecarts if you tell it to, you could pet it and reward it for doing a good job. I had the idea that snowballs didn't hurt the dog or bother it like it does other mobs, so they could be played with that way. Maybe training the dog would be a task you'd have to perform. Other traits could be an aversion to certain things, like some dogs are afraid of thunder (although I've only heard of that in smaller dogs), but if Notch ever adds storms or rain to the game, there you go. I had the idea that dogs are naturally afraid of Creepers, and maybe Ghasts. Maybe another one could be that the dog has trouble moving around on ice.
Some other random stuff I thought up was the dog's barking drawing in aggressive mobs, while scaring away passive ones. I also had the idea that a dog's barking nearby had like a 30% chance to make neutral daytime Spiders become aggressive, as if they had been attacked. This could end up blindsiding a player that wasn't paying much attention, but once the Spider becomes aggressive, the dog would start fighting it and then the player could have time to react. Also, this could make Spider herding much more difficult, which in the end, may make more sense than having them be herded in the first place. Still possible, just gotta get lucky.
Now, when the dog gets hurt enough (down past a quarter of its health or something like that), it would start whimpering and limping, meaning it needs food or sleep to heal it. If it were to get hit enough to remove all of its health, it would pass out and collapse on the ground. The player would then have to pick it up and carry it back to his house, which could either make him drop a couple items from his inventory as punishment for letting his dog get seriously injured, or just do what was originally implied and not allow him to use any tools until the dog is safely tucked into his doggie bed. It would take the dog many pork chops and a couple days to heal, as well as comfort and treats and attention/love from the player. After two or three full day cycles, the dog would be all healed up and ready for work and play again.
As for multiplayer, the dogs may or may not carry over, that'd be a whole new thing. There could be a "leash" you could use to keep your dog nearby, made from Spider string or something, but another idea could be a "collar and nametag" sort of thing, where if a player right-clicks on a dog other than his own with a bare hand, he pets it, and a little window comes up "like when putting stuff on a sign" with a picture of a name tag that would be a bit like:
Name of Dog (chosen by player when he first gets the dog)
Name of the Player (so for me, it'd say "Tabenstein's Dog" or something to that effect)
Type of Dog (border collie, German shepherd, etc.)
Well, that's all I have. Since I've bamped this old thread with my musings and ideas, feel free to talk about it or add your own ideas, or discredit mine as lame or whatever you feel necessary. I'm sure with enough people talking about it, Notch might catch on and implement this, or maybe just somebody that's really good at making mods. I dunno.

That seems all a little complicated.
I would say less commands and buttons and use Hotkeys
But even then i don't see how this would work.

I dunno. I'm just sayin', that's what I came up with. The commands would be implemented once you called the dog to you, and the commands would be selected from a menu, so there'd really only be one button to call the dog.

Yeah, but a menu either means standing around vulnerable to click things or having the game paused while giving orders.
I think dogs should just be a simple thing, give it a collar and it will follow you, help you fight, gather and hunt.
no actual control over what it does.

That's fine, too. The inventory menu does the same, so I just overlooked it because we do it so often messing around in that menu. You raise a very good point, it could end up being dangerous to do such a thing.
I thought it added a bit of depth to the game, being able to control it. It could create a sense of "bonding," since it's like the player and the dog end up helping each other and depending on each other for certain things. The idea of the dog appealed to me the most after I thought of myself in the player's position, alone in this world with nothing but things that want to kill you or just generally ignore you. I'd personally go nuts without some sort of interaction. It reminded me of I Am Legend, or even of Dogmeat from Fallout 3.
But, then again, Dogmeat was not controllable, either. All you could do with him was tell him to stay, or tell him "good boy." But that sense of bonding and camaraderie was still there. I've heard of people actually getting sad if Dogmeat died, so there you go.
Personally, I'd like a bit of interaction, like at least petting or something (right click with bare hand?), but in the end, a helpful companion would be way more than enough.

I agree, a little interaction would be nice.
eg, feeding it when/if it gets hurt.
petting it when it is scared.
simple things that make all the difference.

Mutual agreement has been achieved. Let's hope Notch catches wind.

Well I was wondering what happens If YOU die will the dog come back and respawn with you or if you die faraway from your house it would take a few minecraft days for it to come back, because I don't want to lose my dog
