Our very own Featherblade has 2 entries in the top 10 (out of 250) and actually won a prize of a free minecraft account coming in at 5th place in voting with his ship "Le n'gociant".
1. Le n'gociant, 'The Trader' (Sea Galleon) by Featherblade.
"The attention to detail here is magnificent. Whereas other models of ships might be content, this entry painstakingly even reproduced the correct angles of the sails and even made them windswept - no small feat in a world made out of cubes."
O.O
Yay! Minecraft won me something!

We will revisit your ban once we have the server running normally again. You were asked to stay out of the way several times before you were banned; you need to learn to take it easy. I will ensure your ban is removed once we get our setup running.
Uhhh my ban hasn't been removed please when you have free time from your busy server to unban me thank you for time
Construction spanned several months. Unfortunately the server has been lost so I am unable to show any screenshots of the layout of rooms, staircases (including a large spiral staircase which could be flooded upon attack), gates, dining rooms, kitchens, bridges, chandeliers, etc.
The castle was carved and built without any plan, other than following the shape of the land and placing towers and walls organically to enhance the shape of the land it was built upon. Standard castle architecture and technology was also kept in mind.

The server is not fully fixed yet, so expect it to be at least day or two more. :3
In other news: During all the MC downtime I've had the last few days (this here laptop's been in ze shop getting fixed, and our main computer is even slower than this one), I've been planning & designing the next city in Panores (my small republic on the peninsula): Kulshan. The city will be directly south of the Cathedral in Sealth, on the large sand bar & around that bay (the train tracks float above it). I'm still working on finishing the plans up (and won't be on the server 'till I do so), but I'll post it up here when it's done. :3
And no, I'm not done with Sealth, I'm just having builders block on it. :tongue.gif:
Also, congrats FB! :biggrin.gif:
EDIT: Got ninja'd by a great looking castle. Good job Vagrant!

These are some very rough sketches of my Undaerlund mine project. Digging's gonna suck (unless someone would be kinda with VoxelSniper) but I think it'll be worth it.
cool design, jal. let me know when you have some space picked out for it and exact widths for those circles and i will be happy to save some dig time.
Thanks nine. I was thinking North Myrtana, so I'll do a little exploring, look for a nice cliff face or plateau (if I can get any free time, which could be tough)
The basic plan for Downtown Kulshan. If you want to see any detail, you'll have to magnify it. XD
Map - Brown = Building, Light Grey = Top Path, Dark Grey = Bottom Path, Blue = Water
Buildings - Grey = Iron, Lighter Grey = Stone, Dark Grey = Cobblestone, Light Blue = Glass, Brown = Doors
The map is basically a done-deal, meaning that I don't plan to make any changes to it. I also don't plan to make many changes to the exteriors of the buildings shown, but I still may.
Here's some historical info on city-to-be:
In 1997, the city of Sealth, Panores' capital, passed into law a bill that set a final border for the city, and designated the areas around it as farming & wilderness land. City growth had been stagnating for 20 years, and the city & nation figured that they would any new immigrants would just move out to the villages in the North-West & South-East corners of the Republic. But with the completion of the new subway line to Sagan Observatory & Lehmann Airfield, and the more boats running between the great Citadel, Sealth, and Halcion came a new wave of immigration, coming to Panores in search of new trade & business opportunities.
When it became clear that there would be no room for all these immigrants and new businesses in Sealth or in any of the villages, prospectors began to contemplate where to build. Unfortunately, the west side of the peninsula was completely taken by the national forest, and the east side of the peninsula was inundated with large hills. The prospectors found only one place to start a new city - on the south end next to the small Kulshan Desert and around Mayn Bay, just a short jog away from Sealth - but it was owned by Voxatron Inc. to be used in the construction of their new Panores Science Center. After nearly a month of negotiations, Voxatron Inc. decided to give up the land to Panores on the condition that they could keep 2 lots of land for a new HQ, and that they be allowed to construct the Science Center elsewhere in the country, underground. Lord Pilot agreed to these conditions, and work started immediately on the city of Kulshan.
The city will be more modern than Sealth, with skyscrapers, sewers, electricity (for mechanical purposes only), and more buildings. There'll be more usage of metals, especially iron, and no free ground within city walls (discounting parks). I'll be working solely on Kulshan until I can design some new houses for Sealth - after that I'll be going back & forth between the two.
Now, time to get building...
EDIT: Due to the map being off (how, I don't know), & due to me just getting frustrated with the SMP, I'll wait 'till Monday to get started on the buildings.

Hey guys, looks like a great server community—here’s what I’ve built in the Daro, with a description below.
In the world of art and architecture, the insufflation of culture has become greatly monotonized over the course of history. Because of changes in modern society, art has triggered more reactions with less substance as artists explore new possibilities. Architecture, while slower coming, has been affected by the same changes-- Sometimes the simplest ideas and structures can bestow the greatest reward.
Art itself has inducted more genres and sub-genres within its large canopy of principles. While one can ask the question, “what is art?”, and generate some profound and unlikely answers, one could also very easily ask “what is not art?” and the following debate of whether or not anything isn’t art would be just as interesting. Literature plays a biased role, where subtle intricacies cloud which category the form should lie. Still, famous literature can be used not only as an art form itself but as a basis on which to judge and describe other art. William Shakespeare, arguably one of the pioneers of literature as art, wrote the line “Brevity is the soul of wit” in his infamous tragedy, Hamlet. Not only are the words beautiful by themselves, they provide insight to modern and historical events. Such versatility in words is comparable to the characteristics of art, where literature should be considered part of the field.
Like literature, architecture is seen under the same light. Unlike most common forms of art, architecture consists of two common principals by which it is judged: form and function. Form takes the obvious role of art within architecture, allowing the designer to create a structure that is aesthetically and morally pleasing. Function, in contrast, provides that the structure serves its purpose with utmost capability and efficiency. Perhaps, then, the ideal building would grant a perfect blend between the two (form, function). Plenty of buildings serve their purpose as best as possible, but lack the aspect of form and can leave industrial scars on the land. Such things as warehouses and factories are prime examples of this effect, and tend to break the bond between art and architecture. Yet, the difference between these building and the “ideal” is so great that it makes up for what is lost in architectural standards. Fallingwater, a structure created by the great Frank Lloyd Wright, is one such ideal. Its form blend perfectly with the landscape, layering terraces over waterfalls, as the stone walls rise up from the natural rocks below. But not only does Fallingwater provide us with a stunning visual display of form, its function as a house completes the overall building.
So, how does all this apply to simple video game? No matter what, artistic expression can be applied in any setting. It’s obvious that architecture can also be applied, and sometimes great structures can be created. Even such “ideal” structures have been made, structures that provide form and function together. But why not take a step back? In my design, I strip the game down to its bare essentials: 1 simple block. The block, in itself, can be analyzed and interpreted in thousands of ways. Whether we make the distinction between its form, and its function, is completely up to the viewer and user of the block. As such, the single block becomes art—allowing the audience to create their own conclusions of what it should be. Does this block have purpose? What is that purpose? Is it even architecture, or part of architecture? Maybe it’s something entirely different—it’s simply for one’s thoughts.
I hope you have enjoyed the artistic analysis of my work.
PS, I hope this gets me whitelisted :wink.gif:

I would love to help. If youve ever seen the pics from stixy city of the large temple, that was my idea. It was stolen by some moron called dvar, and i would love to have a chance to recreate it on a server that cares and appreciates what their players do. So, could i plz be allowed to build, whenever the online works again. Plz?

sounds great! I would love to have you come join in our guest area and start as soon as minecraft.net is back up
I will whitelist you immediately upon seeing these images if you answer one question:
before I took over the server, our previous host and his brother got in a bit of a row with Flatirons, who at the time was trying to become a whitelisted member our server. In the end it has boiled down to one unanswered question, flatirons touted themself as a girl, but there was always doubts. Is flatirons, infact, a girl?

However, im going to assume you mean is flatirons a girl, and if so id have to say yes flatirons probably is a girl.

Bad idea: putting a coloseum right next to a christian church. SO, whos the wise guy?
I saw some of the stuff on here yesterday (in particular, Seath, the observatory, and the airfield) and I gotta say it's impressive. Perhaps the better phrase would be "holy $#!%."
Anyway, I was wanting to get whitelisted and build some stuff too. My friend runs a private server with 6 or 7 regular users but he's made it into a strictly survival server - eg :Zombie:, and no item spawning. And that's fun for a while, but I've been really wanting to find a good creative server for the sake of getting some of my... shall we say, less practical... ideas out there. A server sans restrictions, cuboids, and pixel art. If I have to mine for coal again this month it will be too soon. You'll see what I mean when you see the smoothstone in my video. Speaking of video, here's one. Just so happens it's mine. Well, except for the music. Audioswap did that, though the music fits surprisingly well. Here's hoping Audioswap gets me whitelisted.
Muahaha I'm going to get so many views for this video! Also I did end up PM'ing this to Plusnine earlier today, but eh, why not make it public. Also, I started getting impatient for a reply :tongue.gif:. 7 WHOLE HOURS! THAT'S MORE THAN 6 AND A HALF HOURS! I'M GOING TO DIE OF WAITING! perhaps. um. actually no. that's impossible. or is it? This tiny tiny text is nothing but a distraction from the much tinier text you will never find.
Heard mention of you from the Worth1000 competition thread and thought I'd take a gander. I don't much use SMP for more than exploring and seeing what neat stuff other people have built; SMP servers seem an interesting idea and all, but I always worry that stuff I make will get griefed or that the server will "roll back" or worse, that the admins will just decide to shut down the server for good.
ANYWAY, I've been trying to connect to take a look at the stuff in the free zone, but every time I do it gives me a failure saying "Connection Refused: Connect." I've got no idea what that means, but I hope it's something somebody can help me get past? I wanna explore stuff. D=

The torchlight growing weak and I feel the need for trees,
Back once more for coal, but the walls of stone are clean,
Something in the blackness stirs, sprinting after me.
