Id say just one skin wont do. Maybe a crest like you said and everyone MUST place it somewhere people can see if they choose a fraction to join (maybe let spys have a small (1/2-1/4 the size?) one they can try to hide) so we can still have our own skins.
Any mercs, traders, or random person don't need any brands. And if a fraction pays a merc for temp work (hunting, war, raids, scouting, ect) they shouldn't need a brand seeing how they can betray you if the other side pays better.
Also this server will have to support a good number of people. It wouldn't that much fun if one side could kill the other in the first week. I read that an adim can turn off PvP if he wants to, Id say do that for the first week or 2 so you can get some numbers and so that the fractions can get some kind of bases made.

Banned before? Yes. twice. first one was just bad admins (One was drunk and high, didint like what i built (it didint look EXTREME ENOUGH), started cussing at me, i got into it with him and i was perm banned ) Another time I encased myself in an obsidian jail in spawn to GET banned (The server went to **** and my friend was over and wouldn't quit ****ing bugging me about how OMG MINECRAFT LET ME GET ON VANILLACRAFT NOW!11!!111 and would sneak up when i was asleep and get on. So i said "**** it" and got myself banned. I have never been banned for griefing, though.
Why do you want to be on the server?: I'm looking for a good pvp server that isin't full of asshat noobs who just punch you with their fists 20 times at spawn, die, and repeat the process. Or is laggy up the ass.
Faction for pvp?: Good.

I'm definitely going to want to join this server once SMP is less broken, it sounds like it will be pretty interesting.
One mod you might consider is the BiomeTerrain Mod, it allows you to alter almost every aspect of biomes and the terrain, so you could have a dry, barren wasteland world with biomes 10 times the default size or whatever. I have no idea why your asking me, I don't know the first thing about even changing a skin let alone making one. Im just pulling ideas out my ass :Sheep:.
If I had to guess a good crest size. Then maybe have it the same as a players chest/back or just slap it on back of the head (chest/back for normal players and back of the head for king/duke/town drunk/officers maybe). But spys could be the only ones that can put it on the arms or legs (not feet or hands, to easy that way).

I like the home biome idea. Your land would be the whole biome. That would make kowing where you are EASY! And would help people trade more if they get a biome without a lot of what they need.

Id say try to be the first to make a good war server. A lot of people want a war sever so having something is better than nothing. Besides making a server sooner would help if it ends up lagging (more time to make it more stable and less idiots yelling about lag)

We could always get a skin artist on the team for this server and have him design some armor with the crest on it somewhere to lay over the skin a member is using. The same crest would be on the appointed faction member, but the armor of the user would be that of the individual kingdom's. That way they could switch it on when they want to come on the server. :L

I've had an Idea very similar to this floating around my head for quite some time now, but I've never really had the time or resources to put it into motion.
Personally, I'm a fan of the bartering system idea. Each mineral in the game has it's own use and value, so It'd be kinda difficult to set a value to any one and make it a currency.
You also mentioned the choice to pick being a nomad of sorts, I don't remember if anyone brought up the idea of these nomads being able to become mercenaries for whatever faction they choose.
Just a brain storm idea, to make the nomad choice more appealing to some people and to add that little bit of realism (if the thought that people would follow this rule is even plausible) members of kingdoms should have to pay taxes in forms of minerals and other goods to the kingdom, while nomads would be able to keep all their findings to themselves.
Kingdoms would also need kings, so an electoral system would also be interesting.

I doubt I'll build a mountain but I look forward to finding a large natural mountain and building into/on it. Actually I'm going to find one in SSP and make a few rough castles to see what I like and try out new ideas.... just hope I can find a nice snow biom before the sun sets.
What about faction capitols, central cities or settlements that function as the central link to the faction? If you look at the capitol cities for countries [real life] a lot are closer to the borders of the countries then further in. It would be far wiser to have the capitols [in game] in the center of the faction area where all members of the faction can get to them within reasonable time. What if, for example, a large plot of land was set aside for the capitol castles and residential building areas for faction members within the capitol? Add a nice defensive wall and a few gates and you have a nice capitol city and the original faction members get to know each other while they build the castle, walls and their residences.
Of course the walls would have to be very large or the city could be built up [or down] and resources would need to be gathered. Building simple to start with could work and then build onto the simple stuff with fine details, added rooms and other building functions.
Roads would need to be built between the capitol, player settlements and borders as well as any additional roads the players feel like building, say building a road to another players settlement, if both are in agreement to the road.
This is really just my two cents on the topic and there are many other ways to go with the basic idea, if even at all.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that, and I've come to the conclusion, I'm going to have to pick four admins right here and now. Aside from the fact they'll be an admin, they'll be head of the faction. I'll be watching over the Akasha.
I'll have the server up tomorrow...but only to about eight people. One being an admin over the faction, and a partner they choose to help them find a suitable continent and for the partner to establish the first settlement. The admin starting off the Capital City. :U
It'll be open to everyone else on Saturday. Sorry to disappoint. Just want to get everything organized and settled.
