You bring up a good point, but you're not discussing my problem with it anymore. The way I would like to play SMP is as a team with a lot of people, not in this FFA gametype everyone else is going to play. So MY problem with them is that griefers (or bandits) will log on the server I'm playing on with my friends and begin griefing/banditting (That's not a word! Is it?) our stuff, and essentially that's the same problem on CMP, too. But if I were to play FFA, you would have just brought up a valid point. So props for that.
Its up to the players to create their own gameplay. Free-for-all doesn't necessarily mean that everyone has to kill everyone. People will team up to survive, and more often than not, the "Bandits" will be loners. That leads to a very specific point, you are playing with your friends!:biggrin.gif: They have got your back, but no-one's going to want to help a greifer. I can potentially see a problem with organized greifer attacks*, but otherwise, as long as you've got your friends you're good. The best way to think of it is that Free-for-all doesn't mean deathmatch, its more like team-deathmatch with lots of teams and friendly fire and some people deathmatch anyways.
*on a side note, if a "certain internet board" decides to start raiding SMP servers when it comes out, we're all screwed.
Saw that a coming mile away. Nice try though summerfag.
That's an unnecessarily rude reaction to a simple joke I added in after completing the story. Not to mention you're both off-topic and discussing something already talked about quite a few posts ago. Your whole post was unnecessary altogether. It's not exactly hard to spot, either, so don't think yourself too high and mighty.

Simple joke is fail troll. Seriously, quit spreading the cancer.
Make Survival Multi player for Players that paid for the game only
i dont think that will help anyway. Tell me, have you ever played TF2? Pay for game, TONS of greifing. Of killing Floor, tons of greifing. Honestly, the list is endless, and furthermore, some people will greif just because they paid for the game and think its their right.
and back on topic, i agree with what your saying FlipStik, but honestly i think the Paranoia itself will kill SMP faster than the actual greifers will. no-one will want to build something serious on a public SMP server when there's even the idea that someone might find what they build and destroy it.
I do agree with what TerraSleet says :

A lot of people are asking Notch for admin-based solutions, or solutions which make the same stupidly easy and create soft-wall carebear style gameplay, for example unbreakable chests which can only be opened by the owner, having blocks only breakable by the claim flag's owner, etc. This ruins the game more than griefers do by tenfold.
Admin's should only be used to stop hacking, cheating, DDoS attacks, and that sort of thing. also, unbreakable chests and land claim sux also. i would lean more towards players organizing groups to defend their stuff instead of whining to admins.
Guys, Guys, Guys, smart people know that there will be no griefing in SMP. Why? BECAUSE IT'S SURVIVAL. You find something you don't like or something that's made by someone you don't like? YOU DESTROY IT. Simple as that.
I am entirely against ranks for privileges in survival multiplayer, the only ranks that should gain new powers are ops and admins. Unless of course the server is themed to play in a specific way (such as certain zombies servers are of creative). Though ranks for regulars that don't give any new "powers", just status are fine.
I intend to travel between servers with my clan specifically for the sake of finding groups of players to wage war with, this is what I'd consider fun. The only people that I would consider 'griefers' are people using hacks to disrupt play. The number of paying players purposely trying to ruin everyones fun will be fairly low, I'd imagine.
Though if you are trying to make a completely non PVP server, as some people will, then I'd imagine some sort of custom server will eventually be released (as with creative) that will have an option for player to player damage.
Ok, just to point this out: Its Survival MP, Not Simfarm MP, Got it? Breeding monsters and breaking into other peoples stuff is a part of the game. """Greifers""" (So retarded that it had to be triple quoted) are allowed to be there, if your so whiny about it, why not suggesting to remove mobs and rename the game to Farmville 3000: Online?
Just as babarians in the real world, we might not like them, but theyre a part of it.
Its a personal problem. Do some retarded script and add Anime skins when you'r at it.
Would Mr. OP Please shut his downs mouth or just **** off?

In one (rather rude) post, you've managed to sum up ALL my thoughts and feelings on the subject. You deserve a medal.
I sincerely hope I never end up marooned on a desert island with other minecrafters, since they seem to think that "survival" means "free-for-all murderfest." I honestly don't know where people are getting the idea that this is some Hardcore PvP game, because Notch has never even hinted at anything like that. In fact, his very first outline for survival explicitly said it was co-op, and had PvP has separate game modes. I also don't see why destroying things for kicks is somehow no longer griefing when they time and resources to make.

"Survival" is a film/literature/video game genre about survival and self-sufficiency in the wild.
"Survival of the fittest" is a phrase used to paraphrase natural selection.

Okay, first off, you're a ****. Just putting that out there.
Second: You're one of those people I'd expect to be griefing. Survival is NOT supposed to be completely FFA kill or be bored gameplay. There IS a co-op aspect to it. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's the only reason Notch is making it multiplayer. Because it's not very different playing YOUR game you seem to think it is, than just playing Survival Single while talking to other people.
Third: I'm not one of those anime people wanted to get Notch to turn this into an RPG. The game is fun as hell as is. Idk where you got that idea, but you're reading the wrong post, buddy.

I completely agree with you. This is the way I see SMP will be played, or at least the way I imagine/want to play it. Not to mention, I think it's even more hardcore griefing because it takes longer to remake/regain the resources lost in the griefing. Also, I think that some of them think it's no longer griefing, because they keep thinking of their way of playing it the ffa deathmatch style.
I think that I would be satisfied with just land claim flags preventing your blocks from being destroyed will prevent any unneccisary grieving after a while. Though it may be hard at first it will be well worth it, having that said you should be able to get killed in your base. On the topic of hacking, I would generally leave it up to Notch to set-up his thwart hacking system and only go to servers that have them on, otherwise you will die really really fast...

I understand what you mean, but sometimes you have to do what is necessary to survive. i won't go around killing people like I'm playing a deathmatch style game, but sometimes it will be necessary to kill someone who has not done anything to deserve it. i mean, if i have been mining for hours and havent come up with anything of value, i may verry well raid someones base to see what they've got. If they get in my way i will kill them. Survival is not some Utopian society, there will be blood. you can't expect everyone to share, and that's the root of bandits, thieves, and murders. I have to make this comparison, but SMP is going to be a lot like real life, whomever had the the most resources is going to be the most powerful, and that's going to be the person whom most of the others want dead.

Wait, you were serious? That's something I'd post if I were using a strawman argument to make fun of PvPers and the way say "because it's survival!" as if that actually meant anything.

I don't doubt that people will be using entirely team-work based servers, but not everyone will enjoy that.
Being able to attack and kill other players is a whole new dimension to the game and would be a massive shame to remove completely. I'm not talking about servers having to be deathmatches in which everyone is constantly killing everyone else that they see. I'm talking about a server with maybe 4 seperate towns, sometimes sneaking into other towns and stealing resources, along with the players who will be living on their own in a building (or with another friend or 2) who will be able taking the opportunity to attack passers by, or sneak into villages to kill and raid. These are not what I would EVER call griefers, these are people who are playing the game the way that THEY enjoy it.
There will be a number of different types of server:
Ones without a theme, like I was describing.
Team based ones (such as the one you seem to want)
Free for all, kill eveything!
War based ones where large groups of players are constantly fighting.
And no doubt people will come up with plenty of other brilliant ideas.
Different people will be joining the ones that THEY have the most fun on, trying to force everyone to play in a specific way on a game like this is quite frankly moronic. Personally I'll be playing on a number of different servers to make the most of the variety this game has to offer.
I agree with you, good sir. (Or ma'am. Sorry, if it's ma'am.)
This is very agreeable, too. Everyone will play it the way they want to, for fun. But as for the griefing part, everyone seems to be talking about raiding and pillaging as "griefing". The way I personally see griefing right now, would be the people logging onto servers for the sole purpose of ruining everyone's fun for their own amusement. I don't believe I made that clear enough in any of my other posts, so, my apologies for that.
To the land claim ideas, from my current knowledge I would like to say NO. For two reasons:
1.) Griefing is our problem. NOT Notch's. We should be thankful for him making such a great game as is, because I sure am, and not trying to force him into fixing problems completely created by the player community.
2.) I don't know nearly enough about it at all, so if there's some topic explaining the whole concept of it, will someone please post it? Thank you. :biggrin.gif: (If anything in #1 is wrong, this should explain why, haha.
