Real quick, I'm gonna need to say YES, I know this is just another topic whining about SMP Griefing, but I want to voice my opinion on this subject, not particularly for a response, just to say what's up.
This is the problem with SMP.. Suddenly it's not about surviving in a multiplayer environment. Creepers and Mob's aren't the enemy anymore. Griefers are the trouble. The paranoia mentality is going to kill servers and make the game mode almost not worth playing. I'm sure people will try it out, just to see if they're wrong, but if they aren't, then people can kiss it goodbye. Hell, there'll be few brave enough to host a server and try to manage the griefers the whole time. If Notch goes as he says and makes the native creatures of the land more powerful to make the game more of a challenge, we're gonna have even more trouble. Even though playing on Peaceful difficulty is an option, it's unlikely that people will be willing to join those servers anyway. Peaceful isn't exactly the funnest to play on, although it is rather... peaceful... Haha. With this boredom in mind, griefers may choose these servers a little more often, too, as they won't have creatures chasing them around while they destroy that castle we spent days making. Griefers that will remove torches and light sources in certain spots to promote mob spawns and such will be a HUGE problem, too. We're going to need to end up creating a more advanced ranking system than what we're barely living on in CMP. What with the Guest < Builder < Adv Builder < Op < SuperOP system. We'll need to develop very strict limits on guests, add a little more to the Frequent Camper (builder), give a medium amount more to the Survivalist (Adv Builder), and then give most to the Natives (OP). Everything to the Super Natives, though, derp. :tongue.gif: Yes, I DID just create my own names for the new ranks, haha. Although this may seem like a good idea, a lot of people are already impatient enough as it is just going from guest to builder, but from guest to FC is going to take some time, just so that Super Natives can know they trust you. This will ultimately contribute more to the downfall of SMP.. My personal opinion on this whole epidemic is that it may cause SMP to just become a disappointment for most people. I am not on this side, though, because whatever Notch ends up making is going to make me very happy. I know this for sure. It seems unlikely that the entire community will give up on it completely, so I'm willing to work with the few people willing to work with me. Every post I see in this forum seems to be on this same subject, too. There's always another thought of how griefers will pillage our towns and burn our homes and rape our children (lolwat?) with as much ease as it was typed. We may be giving the griefers ideas, but these issues need to be addressed at one point or another, of course.I'm really nervous whether or not this game mode is going to flourish at all.. I really want it to, very badly, actually.. But honestly, I'm not so confident that it will. I'm going to be following it whole-heartedly, though, so I won't be a contributing to it's downfall. I don't mean to be so negative about it, it seems a great idea, there's just soo many flaws.. I don't see how Notch will (If he does) fix these. Although it's ultimately not his problem and we should for surely deal with it ourselves. Also, in the freak chance that you are reading this, Notch (I <3 you, btw!), I don't mean to put any stress on you or anything. This is just my personal opinion and I don't expect you to do anything about it. Your game is amazing as it is, and I'm very glad I bought it. Well, that's all. I'm actually getting really light-headed right now, most likely from some personal things, so I'm gonna stop now. Thanks for reading this. Also: ^^ Wow! Wall of text is wall! Haha.

So this was just for a "hilarious" secret message or did you actually mean to bring up points mentioned more than the beating of a dead horse?
I actually meant to bring up the points. After typing the whole wall I decided to edit it a bit just for fun. This isn't meant to be a joke at all, the "'hilarious' secret message" was just something I wanted to do to give myself a little fun after typing all of that.

But, there will be no griefers in survival multiplayer
SMP will be paid only, how often have you seen a payed player grief? so griefing will be VERY rare, and even less likely on your sever, and even less likely they will do it to you

I didn't know that. But, to be fair, it's still possible that someone will grief.. That doesn't completely change it, though, although it still does. Thank you for telling me that.

Dude ! It's survival you need to survival with bandits etc. -.-
What? I know you're supposed to survive, but surviving against the creatures isn't the main problem anymore. In fact, it barely ever was a problem to begin with.
Personally, when i herd about SMP, i thought griefing would be part of the game. However I did envision a game were it was you against everyone, either. I thought the name of the game was going to be finding creative ways to prevent player enemy's from pillaging your things. This is what appeals to me actually ^-^, the idea of having to lock my main hidey-hole beneath inconspicuous entrances, and perhaps a puzzling route that would lead to lava or something if got wrong. Another fun idea, and I'm just going of into a tangent now. Is making complete clan bases inside a mountain or under an underwater dome(with several layers of dirt to make prevent easy flooding).
Though i do agree, if everyone is paranoid about the "griefers" it will severely hurt SMP, but in a way that differs from your prediction. I would imagine That notch would see the paranoia and feel as if he had to make mechanisms to make everyone happy, that would restrict people to much.
This is not to say you are, for sure, wrong(because in all truth, your predictions may very well come). I'm just thinking differently :]
Dude ! It's survival you need to survival with bandits etc. -.-
Yes defeating bandits are fun, but look at how many griefers there are, thats WAY too many bandits, i (would like to) envision MP survival as a fun freebuild like thing where we all pitch in and build the biggest baddest (and safest) castle ever, then we all take small jobs and such (have guards patrol the town to protect he simple folk from the monsters (and kill bandits) and other people to enforce laws (commonly known as rules (on servers))) and we all live a happy life witht he occasional fire/pillaging which honestly isn't so bad so long as its not every 5 minutes :X
[/rant] id quote myself from another post with my thoughts on mp survival but im lazy lol
but for all we know it'll probably be a bloody murderous rampage, who knows maybe it'll be fun...
When you begin a city you need guards with good swords. when bandits come with large amounts just attack with all guards and kill those Fckers. And call some people up with the forum or chat or someting. It will be hard but that's just the fun of it.
Sorry, I'm feeling confused.. By bandits do you mean griefers? Just need to clear that up.
I think everyone knows by now, but in survival there will be NO such thing as griefers. The only case of griefers in survival will be hackers.
Also, somebody said that Notch should make a Public Announcement, saying that Notch should say "Everyone, this is survival, don't be nice and friendly, go out there and kick everyone's asses."
Yes I agree very much, if you want to live peacefully, your village had better have a 20 block tall steel wall around it with archers stationed no further than 20 blocks from each other. (good luck with that)
Well, honestly I got more reads than I thought I would, and even moreso in replies..
I just gotta say real quick:
I understand that Survival MP is paid-only so I know that that will be making griefing less common. But YES I can guarantee you that it will be there. Because there's that simple possibility that someone who bought the game is bored one night and joins a server they don't know to simply screw them over. They won't care if they get banned from that server, because they can easily just go back to their normal server.
Also, I don't plan on playing this "FFA Survival" everyone seems to talk about. There's a reason survival is becoming MP. So that multiple (hence the "multi" part of multiplayer) people (hence the "player" part of multiplayer.) can play survival together and survive in the habitat they're placed in.
That is all. Thanks for reading. :biggrin.gif:

Just because it's multiplayer, doesn't mean it has to be co-op; survival is easy enough as it is without teamwork. Id rather have the challenge of facing a human opponent than to work with him/her against a bunch of zombies who can't climb my walls.
People grief in , , , , and virtually any other game I can think of that they paid money for.
It's a cryin' shame that people can't play a simple game without some douche ruining everything, but we need something to prevent things like this from happening.
I said this in another thread, and it still holds true.
While it DOES worry me a little, we can't plan the whole game around preventing griefing. Play your game, have some fun, don't be a douche.
I thought the whole point for SMP was for it to be a free-for-all sandbox game. Everyone is always complaining about how there will be greifers, but i don't see how its really greifing in SMP. If you build an epic castle and someone comes along and blows a hold in it with TNT, thats not greifing, its survival. You will have to spend the resources to repair that hole while the other person, putting him ahead. Its not up to Notch to protect you all from greifers, its your job. Get some friends to help you, build your base underground where no-one will find it, think up clever traps, its not that hard. In the end, the only person who's job it is to protect you and your stuff is you, with swords and arrows instead of bans and block protection.

You bring up a good point, but you're not discussing my problem with it anymore. The way I would like to play SMP is as a team with a lot of people, not in this FFA gametype everyone else is going to play. So MY problem with them is that griefers (or bandits) will log on the server I'm playing on with my friends and begin griefing/banditting (That's not a word! Is it?) our stuff, and essentially that's the same problem on CMP, too. But if I were to play FFA, you would have just brought up a valid point. So props for that.
