I would make a small fort, hide my chests under the floor, and surrender. When they leave, I get wood/stone from my chest to repair, and repeat. Strategic surender.

have a narrow, long hallway, with gold roof, flood when they enter, they'll break the gold roof, ONLY TO FIND IT'S ANOTHER WATER PIPE! they'll already be almost dead from deleting the first gold block, and won't last till the second. and if they might, add one last pipe with just a dirt roof. (for ease.)

A simple but effective trick is to build your bridge with a 4 or 5 gap between the 2 edges. They are effectively trapped on the bridge and you could set up a trap to trap them on the tiny little thing.

Talent didn't go anywhere, it just gets lost in all the noise. You have to find it.
Since Notch gave arrows the ability to fall when not attached to a block, TNT gains much more popularity in my book as a trap. Although it doesn't now, I'm hoping falling arrows also do damage. With this, you can pelt a TNT block with arrows on one side, hide it from view, and then set off the TNT thus dropping the load of possibly 50+ arrows and basically insta-killing the person below if enough arrows were used. Combine any stragglers with the explosion of a TNT, and I give this my approval. However, if you don't want any hallway rape, you could just use a normal block and mine it out, although much slowly its extremely cleaner. Any arrows that miss are retrievable, too.
thats if the arrows survive the explosion. And I agree with paradigm, war ladders(jumping and building below you), made of cobble stone, anyone? and if the person falls build a ladder behind the first and jump on the first one

Make a TNT roof, when they come in, hit the TNT, it falls, they explode, and gravity carries it away from you, plus damage from falling into the pit under the floor.

The best thing would be to make caves in a a hill for sniping, and a village in a cliff or on top of a hill with guards on the roof and basement, so people couldn't sneek in from the ground or the land.
The only way to get to it is by brute force or digging between the basement and leading a large army into the fort.
Really, the simplest strategy is the lava on the top of the wall strategy. Build a stone wall with two layers of sand or gravel inside, and a stone outer wall. The first layer is breached, then the second. The lava has got a good ways down when the third layer is reached. As it`s destroyed, the lava flows down the rest of the way, slaying the attacker. Plus, it acts as an offense too. The flowing lava can kill other players on the battlefield. To cover for tunneling, dig out a large bowl under the castle and flood it with water. a tunnel to your base will be instantly flooded. As for aerial assault, build thick walls with passageways inside them. A hacker that can use your lava flood against you by flooding your fort will just protect you! If you are under lava inside a stone chamber, your`e perfectly safe. No one can break into a submerged fort! You just need a way out.... All your defenses trap you. Going down is difficult, up is going to expose you, and while flooded, impossible, and the flood blocks everywhere else too! But at least you aren`t dead!

Allocators are no longer the future, we have Hoppers now. I still like them, though.
Release lava, build a 2x1x1 box around you, of glass for the view, and nobody will ever get through the lava. You can't get out, but if they deflood to obtain resources, you jump out and ATTACK!

I don't think that a simple strategy such as "A flood with lava" would work. It's hard to find lava in the surface (Unless the theme choosen was "Hell"). And even if you find it, you can die if you make a mistake while preparing the trap. However, i have to agree that build a base around the lava may stop underground attacks
Another thing i was thinking: How we defend the mining spot if it were too far from the base?
I think it would be easy to block above ground enemies away, but what can we do about tunneling? I would make a bunch of TNT under my base. So if someones coming, I know about it.
I'd suggest placing random, empty chests in a large open room where any enemies checking them for items would be vulnerable to bows/sneak attacks from behind. Most people would be too greedy to resist.
