base
make it relativly wide, and leave none of it seeable under a few layers of dirt. place a heavily gaurded, but small entrance far away. make the tunnel encased with steel, then lava. This way you don't have to waste resources gaurding a huge castle, but use minimum efforts in protecting the entrance, and also having a large stronghold.
Plus, if there was a mushrooms for resources thing, you could have a nice farm there. :smile.gif:
You can't exactly build a bridge if the bridge is destroyed because the length is too long too build it, creeping up to the edge to build is certainly a pain (or if there wasn't a bridge in the first place).
From Eztuzt's plan you could actually plant a tree(somehow) under the sand/gravel trap, it's a one click trap that can be easily accessed underneath.

The sand stands there as a normal 'bridge' part but when enemies are charging across maybe a considerably longer length of sand the defenders can jump under and destroy the leaves(if the situation doesn't allow it, maybe dirt) this will cause the sand to fall and make the attacker unable to cross or if the timing is brilliant to fall(maybe into lava). Of course after various traps attackers will get smarter(maybe) and probably build on top of the sand before crossing(if they are quick enough).

Talent didn't go anywhere, it just gets lost in all the noise. You have to find it.
And if the need for food/drink were ever implemented, we'd just put extra rooms for farm plots and wells.
Hell yeah
I hope those factors enter survival mode.
Ever play a game called "The Ship"? That could serve as some good inspiration.
Aside from that though, to the thread as a whole, anything you build in a base is merely a deterrence. Whether your castle floats, has traps, or has extra stock, it is only a matter of time. No fortress is impregnable.
However while we're discussing ideas for defense...
Another good idea would be to have players (whom I assume are acting as scouts) hiding outside of your castle that can hit the enemy from behind when the attack starts.
Which, on a related note, is why I wish you could save the leaf-blocks you cut up from trees. They'd make excellent camouflage.

Professional Underwater Lava-miner.
Also a massive mushroom mongler.
Fire moats. Need I say more?
I will.
Just make your castle out of rock, then make a large wooden platform surrounding the castle as far as possible. Light a fuse and BAM.
For every defence, there is always a way to circumvent it.
For chezhead's scenario, the attackers will see this coming after the first couple of times and simply build a stone bridge on top of the wood so that when the explosion happens, they won't lose their footing.
My defense will be to build a large glass(I'm assuming there will eventually be glass in survival) base, with a community, in the middle of the sky. This will let the defenders see the attackers coming, and so they'll be ready for when they somehow get up there.
I have no doubt that someone will get around that defence eventually and it will become obsolete.
To stop tunneling, either build high in the sky, or make a moat that goes under your castle to, even if its just a thin layer of water under it. If they try to tunnel in, theyll have to hit the moat, and then bam, whole tunnel system=worthless.
Build a fortress in the sky, with dirt stairs, so you can TNT them if anyone attacks. You gat easy defence, and you get light for possible farming. The only downside is that it's going to be very noticable, and you can't get more materials once you're up there. But you will need a very intelligent and persistent attacker to get to you, and if attackers pillar jump, they can be shot off (falling a very long way down).
Big counter plan, pillar up UNDER the base, and then alternatly tunnel and pillar untill your inside.
To see this comming, make the floor out of glass. this, or make some guard towers under your base at each four corners and assign guards there and a number to each guard tower.
That way guard tower 4 can tell all the other guardss if they have someone pillaring under their guard tower.
Then they could delete a block and see where they are then place some TNT and drop it on them so it blows them off the pillar. of course there could just be some glass blocks on the floor of the guard towers so they could see for themselves.

Zombies in the area will have the skin melt away and only their SKELETONS will remain, and they'll shoot ARROWS from their STERNUMS. Creepers will still explode as usual, but their suicide will also release a LAVA SPRING from their REMAINS.

Even better, above the moat have gold. That way, an enemy will be dead by the time they mine it.

Stage one: Outer Courtyard- A large open area, around the fort, inside a stone wall
Stage Two: Inner Courtyard- After walking through the Outer, there is a wall, with a gate opening to a stone walkway, winding it's way up the castle, but, so that all times you are vulnerable to the archers (who are continually resupplied with arrows)
Stage Three: Keep- With about 15 thick stone walls around the keep, and an Iron gate, just as thick, the keep is almost invulnerable. With swordsmen on the inside, and the archers on the roof, the leader, or simply the peasants can rest easy, at all times.

Gold or Iron, with iron they have no chance at all to make it.
If we can assume that fire will apear in multiplayer survival, possibly a ditch of flamible material, ligthable Via fuse from inside the fortifications? Also, you have to remeber that a castle under siege will not be able to kill skelletons to get arrows, meaning that they are tighly restricted on ammo. All they can do is get stuff from directly below them. Possibly you could use the new /indev/ flint to set your enemy dirctly on fire, but that would be VERY close range. You'd also need a way to protect against pillar jumping up, perhaps a deep ditch 2 out from the wall, and give the wall an overhang one block in from the ditch, so that you'd need a pillar inside the ditch to get to it, and that would require more resources, more time, and potentially damage, as well as any defences you could place inside the ditch itself.

1. Island fort, if they dig to wrong spot or not deep enough, they drown, plus no cover.
2. use cliffs. The enemy can't work out the difference between cliff face and the wall.
3. fake fort, secret passage to real fort, less secret passage to fake real fort*
4. 4-wide trenches. They'll think it's easy but they'll either waste time making the bridge wider or risk falling.
5. fake secret passage, 1 block deleted to find it= lava.
6. real secret passage under certain gold altar, all other gold things= lava.
7. lava will be hard to find, use it well.
8. A moat with water that they avoid is a good place to hide a passage.
9. If they suspect the bookcase hides the passage, use lava.
10. Fire only has a animation on sides and top,** fire on the floor will leave unanticipated gaps and pain.
*If you make them think they've found your hiding spot, they will steal your gold. Gold= lava. Or obsidian, which is great for making forts, if it can be found, probably stronger than iron.
**I think/hope.
I will now proceed to test my strategies and make my fort.
