I think the survival mode should have a form for experience, which makes the miner dig faster.
I know this is a bit short, but it is the idea :tongue.gif:
Hmm, well, not to discourage you or anything but I'm sort of opposed to that idea. Sure, lots of games put in experience meters to simulate real-life experience, but Minecraft is deeper than that. I think that minecraft's survival mode should separate the strong from the weak by the time spent in the server, memorizing the current map's layout, acquiring resources and crafting better equipment. With all the depth that survival mode has to offer, it should be real skill and real experience that sets players apart, not artificial experience. As for digging speed, uhhh, shovel? It's in the latest indev.

There are several different systems that could be used, from simple and easily changeable classes to a perk system based on how much activity you have done to an actual leveling system. Although from what I can see Notch has no real plans to add these things to the game. It seems that items will determine how good we are at doing things, offering bonuses to different actions like the /indev/ tools.
I'm actually alright with that. A system of growing stronger might be a bit odd or the design for this game. I kinda like the idea of everybody being the same except for tools and their availability.
Please no. I agree that grinding gets very boring.
How about having a ranking system that logs experience but doesn't actually affect any gameplay?
This is a bit better of an idea. How about 'titles', which could be displayed in-game? You'd earn them through 'experience', in a sense, but they'd have absolutely no gameplay effect.
It'd be a way of distinguishing veteran players, along with a way of choosing roles (if you're new to a server, displaying your "Advanced Miner" title is a good way of letting people know what you'd like to do, and lets me know you'd like a pickaxe).
