I can imagine that some people will try and gather as many resources as possible, and then leave the game with the resources in their inventory so that the said resources "disappear" from the map completely. If this happens often, the resources are most likely going to decrease after a while.
Wouldn't it be possible to make it so that you drop _all_ of your resources when you disconnect from the server?
I think we're all taking this too far. Why not just have the server record your resource amounts, and let you hold onto them for 3 days (or however many seems like a good idea) If you havn't returned before then, it'll empty them outta your inventory and spawn them in the game to keep the number of available blocks more or less in equilibrium. Alternatively, we can make you lose 1/4 of your blocks every day back to the world, so that it stays more in balance instead of having such large rises and falls of resources. A reasonable block inventory cap (such as I outlined in my post that i'm too lazy to retype, but will link to: viewtopic.php?pid=21904#p21904 ) ought to solve this problem and still keep regular players satisfied.
Once someone leaves all the little blocks that come from blocks after you break them spew from the person body, so people will try and gather as many of them as possible :biggrin.gif:

And they should probably shoot out pretty far... It wouldn't be so good seeing someones full inventory in one spot...
EDIT: Now that I think about it... this is a bad idea >_>...

Seems a bit ridiculous to me. If I take up half an hour mining for my next big awesome build i'd be absolutely pissed if I lost all that work because my internet disconnected for a second. Players should get to hold onto at least a portion of their inventory for a grace period of days. Furthermore, it should be server scriptable in the API.
It really doesn't strike me as that bad. =] I don't know how exactly Notch set resources up, but I figure the server will be doing the resource tracking anyways, so its not like its any trouble getting the values... What exactly do you find complicated about it?
When you leave or die, you drop a chest of 'infinite' size containing everything in your inventory. This chest can only have items removed from it (i.e. you cannot put things back into it) and vanishes upon being emptied.
Very simple!
And of course if you come back, you come back with a 100% empty inventory, but if you reconnect within an hour or so you come back on top of your chest if its contents have not already been stolen.
To prevent spamming of chests or use of them as storage, you can only have one at a time. The previous one will break open, scattering some of its contents around and removing the rest from existence.
No matter what you do, though, people can waste resources by digging up a bunch of stuff and then taking a lava bath.

"I want to see forum posts saying "how do i kill dragon" with replies reading "lol"."
---> vede claimed Notch said this (and it is awesome).
Thats just terrible. There is no need for resources to ever be completely lost from the map. Otherwise a map could eventually be mined to the ground. Furthermore, If i work for 12 hours then come back the next day, why on earth should Irisk losing all my material? Its painfully unfair. Additionally, I think the concept of a chest is being skewed and stretched out of bounds here. I don't see why everybody thinks there needs to be 30 types of chests that all do different things.
I repeat again that the end decision of where people's resources should go ought really be a decision made by the server admin. Its another one of those things that makes me wish Notch had went with Python instead of LUA, but just so long as he make's it work...
I'm not sure people will be draining all the resources out of a map. There is too much in there. But if this problem does become serious, maybe major resources would be dropped, like items, food, and ores.
And just another thing. There is another way of getting resources deleted forever. Has anyone tried building at the top most level?
This might not be a problem when it comes to common materials such as stone or dirt. But if there are going to be materials that are hard to find or perhaps even rare, it would suck if someone gathered most of it and just left after a while.
Well if you want persistent games without fear of resource draining there is only one reasonable solution.
HUGE maps! Players could spread out to the point where there could be separate kingdoms and there would always be space if you wanted to go solo. Also, have you checked how many resource blocks are on large maps? Enough to last for a long time.
Besides, there comes a point where all the resources would be gone even on a totally legitimate server. So the only way to have an "eternal" server would be through partial map regeneration or something like that. Every few days underground sections that are out of ore and have not been visited for a while would regenerate with a completely new configuration.
Frankly, I think the best setup is to just reset the server every week and a half or so.
Actually I remember a suggestion along those lines. Random events (Maybe triggerable by admin?) would replenish resources. Such as volcanic eruptions, rain, earthquakes and so forth.
And the collapsing might take some of the stable part of the cliff with it?
Might be hard to code though.

Zombies in the area will have the skin melt away and only their SKELETONS will remain, and they'll shoot ARROWS from their STERNUMS. Creepers will still explode as usual, but their suicide will also release a LAVA SPRING from their REMAINS.
I really don't see how this is a problem, Seeing as games would be reset a lot... I mean, Once someone dies, They should go into a spectate mode until everyone dies, Or a certain amount of time depending on how the owner sets it up. Really, One survival game can't go on forever...
Yeah, the way I see survival mode is each server only lasts around 20-50 minutes, and reset because then, prob most people (if not all) would have died.

It would be funny to see different death messages for leaving like:
"Zuriki has been evaporated for leaving the world"
"Zuriki was converted into a mound of soil for leaving the world"
I'm not in a particularly funny mood at the moment so I can't think of any really.
