On my scenario map ( http://sites.google.com/site/therestofy ... t-scenario ) I did this to make a rooftop garden, and in reverse to make some grass at the bottom of the map just over the bedrock. In both cases it worked fine, but took forever. (I wasn't planting trees, just spreading grass)
There is no grass under the trees in minecraft too. At least not directly under the trunk.

There is no grass under any of the trees outside my house.
This is because the instant the tree grows, there is no sun for that dirt block. The tree does not need any grass after it have growed to sustain itself, and therefore it does not die.
Trees I should build: Hell tree, cheese (sponge) tree, disguised tree (really a laser death ray), magic tree, willow tree, cake, hover tree, sky tree, dead tree, no tree, cake.

Ironic, isn't it? A tree needs grass to grow, but when it does grow, it removes the grass. This is a deep analyzation of today's society, I'm sure.
Theory, build massive stepcase upwards, let grass spread, plant tree, delete grass/dirt = SKYTREE!
-EDIT: Just waiting for my grass to spread.
Yeah but then its not a skytree its a hovering tree..
Thatones built right up on the skybox :biggrin.gif: it trimmed off the top of it
I wonder what made you think that trees didn't need grass.

Logics, perhaps... Normally, trees only needs decent soil and sun. The other decorations only need sun and soil, no grass is needed
