Ok, if you take a map, open it in omen, and put a roof over the sky, the entire map is counted as a cave, and therefore has an ENORMOUS spawn rate. you can also then make the ground all stone, and fill the air with mushrooms, which will mostly stick around in the dark.

you have to walk a bit, but the 'shroom field is there.
Hahaha, this is really fun! I've walked past zombie hordes and when I turn around after I walk past a good few hordes all I can see is, like, 30 zombies all chasing after me. XD
Perhaps the game calculates spawn rates based on the number of cubes in the highest layer of a generated map? I think Zuriki might be the best person to ask about this...
wait, i don't understand why it has such a big spawn rate. is it because they spawn more in caves?
It does make sense, actually. Caves generally have much less space than wide outdoor areas. Assuming that the spawn algorithm spawns X mobs every Y empty tiles (that is, it has a fixed density), then a decent spawn rate for the wide open outdoors would result in completely empty caves. Having two separate spawn rates makes sense.
But yeah, where's Zuriki? We need someone who's actually done some decent testing on this.
i was playing it, and i made it to the mushrooms, and where all the blocks were. after digging out a base for myself in the glass cube, and collexting loads of mushrooms for myself, i used creepers to blow up the cloth blocks, at witch point i collected as many blocks as i could, and made a tower to the surface world. apparently, enimies dont spawn on top. =D

I wouldn't listen to a thing I say. I'm probably insane.
