I had an idea on how to make flowers useful. It should be that if you place a red flower it would prevent monsters from spawning anywhere in a 5x5x5 area around it and if you plant a yellow flower it would double or triple the chance of pigs spawning near it. That way you can build a fort and spread flowers throughout it to keep monsters out and keep your food storage up. Also you should be able to craft flowers and mushrooms to make potions, poisons, and other status effecting items.
When you say 5x5x5, do you mean 5 blocks in each direction? Or 5 blocks total (like the sponges)? I would support the second one, but not the first. And yellow flowers could make pigs 1.5 times more likely to spawn or something, double/triple seems like too much. I think that they should actually be used in crafting as dyes, and that Notch should add more types of flowers. The potion/poison idea sounds good too.
Flowers already have one use - they're great for diving adventures. Since the area around the flower sprite is air, and the player can walk through the tile, simply place one underwater and you have a few seconds of air to restore your breath. :biggrin.gif:

Perhaps you can craft sponges, collect some water, then use it to grow your flowers so they have those abilities.
I absolutely love the idea of flowers increasing pig spawns, but if that were the case I think they should be much more rare or hard to create than they are now; the same goes for the anti-spawn flower, that could be ultra-easily exploitable too.
Free food/free safety should be a hard attribute to obtain.
On that note, one of the things I always imagined about survival would be the fact that eventually people would have to work together in order to create later things in the game and that a village would be necessary at some point. This just kind of flows with that.
IMPORTANT: ever find urself without any shrooms or defenses or sponge? you can create a level in sandbox mode (single player) put a ton of flowers (yellow AND red), also put a ton of shrooms and cloth glass, etc. kill yourself in the generated match, then select LOAD A LEVEL and there it is =)=)=):smile.gif::):smile.gif::):smile.gif::):smile.gif::):smile.gif::):smile.gif::):smile.gif::):smile.gif::):smile.gif:
I like that idea. An alternate idea of mine (But not necessarily better) is that we could have pigs occasionally eat red flowers. When they do it adds a shroom to their drop rate. Then you could farm the pigs to give better drop rates before killing them.
I have an idea for flowers. Use them as distractions. When you are being chased, drop a flower, and the enemies will attack it for a second before resuming their pursuit.
I like that idea. An alternate idea of mine (But not necessarily better) is that we could have pigs occasionally eat red flowers. When they do it adds a shroom to their drop rate. Then you could farm the pigs to give better drop rates before killing them.
Why do flowers have to have a use? Just because something takes up an inventory space doesn't mean it has to have a use. :T
How about planting them to make your base look pretty. :T I'm not for this idea. If the game wants you to die immediately to a spawn of skeletons as soon as you spawn into a level, then it is time to die. No saving graces, no flowers to save you. Straight up death.
