Since there is no information about how crafting will be implemented, I have a suggesion.
You cannot just craft items on the spot out of nowhere. You need a workbench kinda block. To get that, get resources for it in the inventory, and press some button to open a menu where you can choose to make a workbench (this menu could be extended to display other options too, like building a torch block that you can place in dark places etc.). Then it takes some time to build the block, and meanwhile you cannot walk or fire arrows or such. When the block is finished, you get it in your inventory to place wherever you want. for examle, to be protected agains mobs while crafting, you can make a structure to place it in, or place it in a cave. Then you can use the block with E to open a crafting menu for items. When you craft an item, it takes resources from the inventory, and time. Meanwhile, no other player can use the block. So for efficient crafting in team games, you have to make several workbench blocks. Off course, this can be expanded to build several different workbenches that crafts different types of items. Like one for farm tools, fishing rods and other food related stuff, one for weapons, one for armor, one for bombs, yeh you get the point. =)

What do you think?
sounds sorta like how the implemented it on the sims: castaway. i think for survival this would be a great idea. you could have different workbenches for different types of things you are making (ex. iron workbench for weapons, wood workbench for structures etc.). another cool thing would be the ability to combine resources to create another resource, like alchemy. for example, if you had 2 silver and 1 ore, you could combine them to make gold.

Hopefully this is how Notch will implement crafting.
Also this could be used to make storage blocks in the same way. They could look like chests and maybe hold 500 blocks.
I'd rather not sit around at workbench watching a progress bar crawl across my screen ;p
---> vede claimed Notch said this (and it is awesome).
