I think it would be nice if things like ore had greater purpose than just sitting in your inventory. Such practical uses for building would be a need for shelter (such as taking damage when it rains) and walls to keep out strong enemies. Let's make some ideas
Log: Looks like a tree trunk, but the grain is sideways, you get two when you cut a tree block. Can keep out most enemies.
Wood board: You get two when you cut a log block. Weaker than log blocks.
Sign: Made from one board, brings up dialog box for text when you make it.
Fire: made with one board, food heals more when eaten near it.
Stone: Used in lots of things, if put inside your house, in the dark, and within 5 blocks from water, you can grow mushrooms.
Furnace: Made with 10 stone, used to made metal things.
Iron: Made at furnace with 1 iron ore and 1 wood board.
Steel: Made at furnace with 1 iron and 1 coal.
Sand: Used with one board at furnace to make glass
Power Crystal: Rare material found deep underground in dangerous areas. 2 blocks high, gives 5 smaller crystals when mined.
Crystal Lamp: 1 Steel 1 Glass 1 Crystal. Goes back into inventory when "Destroyed." Gives enough light to grow crops in 4 block radius.

"Survival" is a film/literature/video game genre about survival and self-sufficiency in the wild.
"Survival of the fittest" is a phrase used to paraphrase natural selection.
Rain causing damage? When you're walking and the rain comes on does your skin rip open and your muscles die and you're left there while you bleed to death?
The only thing it should do is slow you down! Rain is not harmful but instead makes you colder and your clothes absorb the moisture, making them heavier, which means that you need to put more effort into walking normally and uses up more energy.
What's the "This." thing? I'm seeing it everywhere!
Oh, and I hope there will be a constant day-night transisiton. Maybe the more threatening monsters could come out at night like Castlevania 2/Zelda OOT? I dunno. I think I'm accidentally leaning more towards Zombie Survival here.

Hailstorms then. Notch said he agreed with me when I said building bases should have some practical use. Shelter is a basic survival need.

Well walls stop ground enemies, think of a roof as a protection from flying enemies. You shouldn't have to run inside every time it starts raining. And you can't die from hailstones, unless they're bloody big ones.
A baseball sized chunk of ice going at terminal velocity is going to sting.

I wouldn't listen to a thing I say. I'm probably insane.

But they're all doing terrible jobs at it.

Ironically, whilst talking to Notch on IRC, He said he would like to add vehicles at some later point.
