Why does nearly everyone use smooth stone?
I find that unless it's underground built out of caverns or designed to look like it's a natural or dug out building that cobblestone looks nicer
1. So people can do this.
2. So there is less "noise". This means it doesn't look like a bunch of lines when viewed from far away, and that close up it doesn't look like a monotonic pattern when used in copious amounts.
I don't build elaborate, gigantic castles as my home. I usually just make a house out of wood and cobblestone. I then add a fence, and a murder hole (a hole in the ground, where you can only see the enemy's feet. Useful for attacking creepers).
And with my recent discover of a shitload of coal and iron, I'll be building my home with a huge tower on the top with all the way up as a "beacon" of sorts.

With a pick.
Aww, c'mon, I'm trying my hardest to get into someone's sig [Skeleton]
Unfortunately the save was deleted when someone told me to clean out my temp folder, but I'm glad I got a picture of it lol. It helped a ton when I was trying to navigate back to my base by boat at night.
It goes up to the build limit and has a patio you can stand on at the top btw. Built from sea level up 100% legit aside from the lava, because the nearest lava source was pretty hard to get to.

I find cobblestone to be visually noisy, but it goes well with cobblestone stairs.
I'm just :ohmy.gif: at some of the clever tricks in here. I really need to experiment more with signs and fenceposts and halfblocks.
I tend to favor one style of building, I've been refining it as I go but It's usually:
Cobblestone walls
Smooth stone floor & cieling
Floor to cieling 1-block wide windows, with the bottom block a halfblock instead of glass.
Halfblocks bordering the roof edges, corner blocks 1 cobblestone higher with a torch.
And for some buildings I double the cielings up and make the top layer dirt. Get some grass up there and toss trees on the buildings.
And most important, lots and lots of trees around, and follow the terrain.

[quote=smurfsahoy]Here's my half timber frame, jettied English house I just built. Not yet decorated inside, and the entrance to the cellar just leads to a solid wall atm.

I built a rather neat house disgused by stone rather efectively.

Here is the simplest way.
While looking at your scene, press "Print Screen" (or Prtscn). It is usually located at the top of the keyboard, after the F12 key. Now open a graphics editor such as Paintbrush (comes with Windows, located in Windows folder, called pbrush.exe)
Edit - Paste
Now use the marquee (square) selection tool and select only the Minecraft window.
Image - Crop
File - Save As
Select .jpg extension and where to save it with a name.

This is the storage room for my open-pit mine. Mostly sand and cobblestone in those chests. It's also the largest building I've built that I use regularly (quite small compared to what other people seem to be creating).
It's not very pretty yet on the outside, but I think it's making progress on the inside.
I have a low-built hall-like building that I like the look of. It's nothing special, I guess - but I think it looks better than a simple wood hut. I also have an old house I made of stone and wood, with glass windows. Both are shown below:

I built something like your first picture, except it was underwater with a glass roof, and you could see it from the nearby mountain at night, it was pretty neat.
After seeing what bricks look like in Doku's texture pack in the other SS's in this thread, I'm now conviced that I must go on a clay hunt, so I can make some brick walls instead of cobblestone.
Lots of great ideas and creativity in this thread. My lodge is fairly simple, but functional. Most of my time has been spent underneath working on the automated ore hauling system.
here is my home from very far away *not many good vantage points* but i will update these photos soon as i have finished what I was building in the middle right of the picture *the wall thing* and have added some more stuff

Exterior, with groovy moon shot.
Interior with supports.
Fire pit which may or may not have resulted half the structure burning down when i first tried it.
There's a chunk missing out of the stair roof because they're invisible due to a bug.
