ok well normally minecraft runs at around 15 or so FPS on normal render distance on my mac (if i had a choice i would get rid of my mac, but oh well). i switched to a 32x32 texture pack. now im getting 30 fps on normal render distance. i dont get it, wouldnt a higher resolution make it go slower?
Higher resolution textures don't really affect your hardware as much as you might think. if it was 512x512 textures to 2048x2048, sure, but from 16x16 to 32x32 not so much.
I'm not sure if the actual custom texture support fixed this, but installing custom textures used to cause animated water, lava and flames to stop working, this might be the reason for your FPS increase.
no i installed the patch to fix all the animations.
