How have you all been building these without trapping yourselfs at the bottom before completing the elevator? I can't figure out a way to dig the elevator shaft and the water shaft, place the water (at the top), and place the boat (at the bottom) without having to make a couple of trips up and down. This means I need an alternate ladder shaft or staircase, which is more time and resources that I'd rather not spend. So how did you all (those who have built one) do it?

I dug out both the main shaft and the water shaft as one, so that the two shaft are connected. I then pillared to the top of the shaft, hence separating both shafts.
I'll do a bit of experimentation with the falling through the boat glitch today. I'll post them when I get something figured out.

Oh! And then you just rode the water down to place the boat, right? Wow, I can't believe I didn't catch that. >.< I guess I'm still just trying to wrap my head around this awesome idea. Thanks!

I think he just pillared up to block it off, but left a drop-pad at the bottom of water to fall back into, or something similar. Otherwise the water flowing everywhere would be messy, and you would have to block it off on the way down.

he's talking about riding the water down in spot where the boat is going to go, using it like a ladder.

also, I'm gonna go make one!
I should have realized that was what he meant. I envisioned him trying to ride the other tube down.
EDIT: BY that I mean inside the other water tube...just to clarify.
Well, I just finished my elevator, and for the most part it's great! I am having a couple of problems though: sometimes when I try to go up, I get in the boat and move towards the water corner, but eventually I can't go any farther and still haven't lifted off. So, I get out of the boat, and then it starts to shoot upward. If I right-click quickly enough to get in, it just falls back down and the process repeats.
Also, I sometimes exit the boat bellow it when getting out at the top, which means I (and sometimes the boat too) fall all the way back down.
The bad news is I have no idea what is causing these bugs. Hopping out the bottom of the boat, invisible walls which the boat can't pass, I can't figure any of these out. I've tried every orientation of the boat, and ladder, but nothing gives a consistent glitch. All I can say is, if you have trouble, kill the boat until it's fixed.
The good news is I have the principle of multiple floors working, and we can have any amount of them! We don't even have to drop the minecart from the top, it can all be done locally! I might make a vid tomorrow showing the concept without redstone; the application will create a redstone hell. It's time for me to review Bob's minecart tutorials again!

OK, I might have lied. A video won't be going up today.
Minecarts are terribly unpredictable when they go off the track. They the space they cover off a track differs, and that makes stopping the boat unpredictable.
If I use minecarts on the side where the boat is close to the wall, then sometimes the cart is knocked away when you exit the boat. This could take more work, but now I'm sure it's possible. It will just be time consuming.
The boat elevator I made the day after this was posted is working fine, reliable with no glitches. I made 2 new ones today on 2 other worlds, and both of them are consistently dropping me out of the bottom of the boat when I exit at the top. I double checked everything and they're built correctly, but for some reason the 2 new ones always drop me down.
All 3 have encountered the "invisible wall" scenario at the bottom of the shaft, but I just leave a 3x3 landing at the bottom. Hopping out and shoving the boat into place usually seems to do the trick.
I just build my second elevator, ran into the invisible wall problem which dissapeared after a few new boats, didn't fell out of the boat upon leaving it this time, i only did 1 thing differently, placing the ladders not directly next to the boat, unsure how much that matters though but just thought i let you guys know

Anyone had any luck ironing out these issues?

Sweet, looking forward to seeing it in action.

Edit: Doesnt work because im pretty sure its impossible to get a door to extend over somthing like that.

Thanks for posting this.
Worked great after that :happy.gif:
This worked for me.
