Near as I could find by searching the forums, no one has set up iron double doors successfully. Probably wrong, but thought I would share my mechanism. 1 switch to open and close them simultaneously, with hidden wiring (which I only recently discovered was possible).
Finished, and working:
Question for the more experienced redstoners, why is it so.damn.hard. to get it working? The connection to the second door (the one with the inverter) had to be disconnected and reconnected like 3 times for it to "catch". Is there a reason for this?
In any case, works now. I assume I am not the only one who have done this?
That is, all the wiring is under the ground. Turns out redstone torches can effect doors above it, and switches can affect wires below it, allowing a completely hidden wiring system.

If you have a redstone wire, can you place a block directly on top of it and the wiring will remain, or do you have to have an 'air gap?
Is there a distance limiter? can a redstone torch / wire be 5 blocks underneath a door and affect it still?
You need an air gap of 1 block, and it has to be only 1 block.
Thanks for the info. I'll be working on getting this exact device working, but I'd like to have two pressure plates which each toggle open or closed. Then I can just walk forward, hit a pressure plate to open the doors, and another pressure plate on the other side will close them. Then it will work in reverse.
I don't know if this is possible (I did it with a wooden door and two plates) but it would be great if I could do it with the iron doors.
I believe the reason why it works is because whatever block a lever switch of button is attached to it turns that whole block into something equivalent to a redstone wire, that is why if you put a button on the block right next to the door it will open, and since that block space is a wire, haveing a wire on the block space under it acts as a connection because it is 2 block spaces of wire. That is why using redstone torches you are able to connect the wire vertically through the use of redstone torches because they turn whatever block they are attached to into a wire as well, only in there case it ends up being an inverter.

MOD EDIT: Saying this is unnecessary and rude. If people are willing to discuss it, let them discuss it. There's a whole wide world of other topics you could explore and contribute to that you might even be interested in! How exciting!

I did something more advanced in multiplayer. I did the exact thing you did which is to basically take one output from the switch, split it into two, and invert one to make them opposite so that they are equal. My advancement is that I added a switch on the inside. The inside switch with the outside switch go through a xor gate. That creates the effect that whenever either switch changes the gates output will change. So I split the gate's output and inverted one. Totally hidden and they are both near the door.

I was wondering, how did all of you get into this game?
I am pleased you figured out how to do this by yourself. I managed to do the same a few days ago, when I put up a portal room in my new base
it's just one of those things that seem impossible at first, but you realize how easy it is once you've pulled it off. on one of the doors, the signal has to be inverted. that's all there is to it
What a coincidence that I stumbled upon this thread today. Just yesterday I struggled for a long time trying to get double doors to work on my castle. I ended up with a pretty hackjob setup under the hood (because I was learning as I went) but had a great result! I got all wires hidden with working double-doors. They are activated by pressure plates from either direction. ALSO, on the inside of the castle wall I have a lever that locks the doors so neither the pressure plates outside nor the pressure plates inside will open the doors.
Of course, having finished it and understanding the mechanics of it, I designed a much more streamlined version during class today, but I definitely don't have the heart to tear down all that painful work haha. I guess I will use it for the NEXT set of doors :tongue.gif:
I have a setup whereby the doors opens automatically as I approach it from one side, and must be manually opened from the other.
= floor
= wall
= Pressure plate on floor
= door
= button on wall
= Redstone torch (in order to invert the current for one of the doors)
= Redstone
= Redstone, sunken by one level (not sure if this is necessary)
The Only Thing is that the underground only needs to be one deep at the spot just before the torch Like This:

Update on This with this design ^^^^ one door will open 1 tick before the other. In order to completely synchronize it you need to use the north/south quirk in which info can be provided on the wiki here:
Old news is old, this has been accomplished MANY times before. I made simple double doors for my house with pressure plates, you only have to step on one plate to activate the double doors, they open almost the same time, and using only 3 torches, and about 9 wire total.

whats the fun in that. only 3 torches and 9 wire?? i like my doors with clocks on them so i dont have to rush through. these doors have a 2-3 second delay before they close. a single button is used from the outside to open both doors and a single pressure plate is used on the inside to do the same. the lever on the inside will "lock" the door by disabling the pressure plate so that a cow doesnt let a creeper in by stepping on it.
you can check out this thread http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=106134 to see a few other things ive come up with(and hopefully give me ideas!), like my super secret ninja room, as well as download my save to see how i set everything up specifically.

This forum has made me decide that I now want kids, so that when they get old enough, I can forbid them from coming here. it's a terrible place.
What I personally like to do is a little different then what everyone else has suggested. It is a little complicated but it would work. My idea would incorporate have 2 switches 1 on each side. Each acts as if it were a toggle in that if you change the state of any switch it will change the state of the doors, thus closing them or opening them. You do the same as mentioned above which is to just invert 1 output. I mentioned this before, but to synchronize you need to use a repeater using the property called the north/south quirk. Info can be found on the wiki under redstone circuits (see my post above for a link). Here comes the tricky part. Or not so tricky part 0_0 you need to attach the two outputs of the two switches to an XOR Gate. With this gate, the out put changes every time 1 of the input changes ie: the switches. Just hook that up to the first part and all you need to do is cleverly hide it. Pictures coming soon.
