Caves are usually really easy to find, but they never take you down deep enough to find :ironore:, , or :DORE:. At least from my experience, I never found such a cave on ground level that led deep enough. So how do you find these caves? Usually, I keep mining into a mountain and go deeper and deeper (Which uses up about 5 iron pick axes) until I finally hit a cave. Other times if i scavenge enough gunpowder, I made TNT and blow up a hole somewhere hoping it will break into a cave. Another way of finding caves is listening for mob noises or rushing water when your in a cave near the surface. Usually, those mobs lead me to other caves, but unfortunately, that leaves me to deal with enemies. Oh and never mine above you and especially not below you. **** happens if you do that, and you guys should already know that.
So are there any other ways that help you find deep caves and get to ze ore? Maybe once magic comes, there will be this utility you can craft that can help you find subterranean areas with ease.

Dig Down until you find a very deep cave then explore it.
Surface caves nevar have
cartographer if you want, i prefer not to use it to find caves/ore tho
when you get to the end of a cave you deem not deep enough, try digging around a bit. you'll most probably open up a new cave after 3-4 blocks of digging in any direction and can resume your spelunking.

I actually dug my own cave and hit an underground cave with lava and water right beside each other. You just gotta keep digging and digging pretty much. Sometimes you might hit jackpot but then again you can always dig in any direction given the amount of tools at your disposal, if you find a cave not having what you want, just try a new direction for a little while. I still haven't found any diamond yet but I have hit a jackpot of red stone.
I actually was spelunking around today and found a cave that almost killed me when I fell into it. It's was deep enough to find a good amount of iron and even some lava flowing within. Now, to figure out how to get out of there...:tongue.gif:

“Take the first step, and your mind will mobilize all its forces to your aid. But the first essential is that you begin. Once the battle is startled, all that is within and without you will come to your assistance.” ~ Robert Collier
I've been dying to find red stone, but to no avail. I managed to find 5x64 Iron, 30 gold and 12 diamond during my plays, but never a hint of red ore. Guess I have to keep digging.
I just bought Alpha two days ago, so I am by no means an expert at spelunking, but here's a strategy that has found me a lot of iron and just uncovered my first gold ore. You know all those dirt and gravel deposits you keep running into? What you do is switch to shovel or hands (do not waste pickaxe charge for this), and just dig through all the dirt or gravel. You'll almost always uncover some ore, and when you finish degraveling the area, pick a direction and start digging diagonally down. Make sure you have plenty of torches for this (coal is very common to find with this method, especially near the surface, so as long as you bring some wood with you, you're good). As I'm writing this, I just found more iron and HOLY CRAP MY FIRST REDSTONE ORE
The only side effect of this is that you end up with several full of nothing but dirt and gravel. Oh well, just use it to build anti-livestock walls around your farming area.

I once found such a cave, a giant crack that started from the surface and went all the way down to the obsidian blocks. It even had a river from the ocean that flowed into it, so the cave had a waterfall. When I first found it, I went into it and I remember it was very dark, the waterfall and river kept pulling me deeper into the cave... I kept falling with the waterfall and having the river break my fall as I got pulled down. This was when I just generated a new map, so I had no torches. When I finally got to the bottom, there was lava that provided some light, but then the monsters with arrows killed me and I had to start from spawn again. Now I have the cave under control and lit up. I conquered it.
I never really go into caves unless I'm bored or looking for a dungeon. If it's :goldore:, :DORE:, or redstone you're looking for, then this is what I do: dig all the way to the bottom of the map, it doesn't have to be all the way, but pretty close. Then just dig out a lot of mining tunnels. I've gotten about 6 diamonds, a lot of iron, two deposits of gold, and a motherload of redstone by doing that.
i would dig under trees 2 blocks wide and i would stand in the middle so i won't fall. I would useally find a cave or ore deposits. (it has to be natural trees, not planted)
Usually you can dig around a bit when you reach the end of your cave and hopefully bust into a new one.
Right now I have a massive cave in my world that started at the surface and leads down to the lava / diamond levels. I've found about 20 diamonds so far just by spelunking this one cave system. Underground dungeons are nice because they typically make a lot of noise, making them easy to dig to, and they almost always connect to a different cave system.
The way that works for me was cave music. I have my music at 100% (music is just so peaceful and beautiful) and sound at 50% (monsters need to shut up) so I normally hear the eerie noises, but sometimes the monsters. Oh and if you find dirt like 20 blocks below sea level, there is usually something there (I got like five bonus caves like that.)

my god i love you. that is wat im talking about!! but these twitter trolls wont stop!
Such as the time when I was building a quick shelter next to a canal I was trying to dig so I could claim to have circumnavigated my mainland. After building a quick wooden bunker, I started digging the sand out so I could put down a floor. First block I took out caused the whole thing to drop me down into a cave system and a party of creepers.
Following the tunnels and clearing out the dirt and gravel 'cave-ins' in the tunnels led me straight down to the lava level. Diamonds, iron, redstone, and a huge number of lava lakes turned into black staking rinks from a bunch of underground rivers hitting the lakes. Full jackpot.

By accident.
