To the two posters who said gold is not useful in real life.
You are fractally wrong! Gold is very useful irl.
It is an extremely good conductor of electricity and heat. Also it doesnt tarnish easily (or at all?)
It is used a lot for electroplating terminals and leads for audio equipment.
Its also used to make dental fillings, its used in satellites and on the voyager probes there is a gold record.
Gold is used in jewlery making not just for its colour but because it has similar properties to platinum (especially certain gold alloys) and gold is much much more common than platinum.
Gold does not holds practical value in real life either.
It is used for circuit board traces. I have a friend who collects old boards, removes all of the components, shreds them and extracts the gold. Needs like 5 gallon buckets of shredded boards to get a meaningful amount of gold though. (And given that he does not make more circuit boards I suppose that brings us back to minimal practical value...)

If at first you don't succeed, repair the creeper damage and try again.
...Magical red dust surrounded by gold will tell you the time of day
...Tnt is used to shoot dozens of arrows at one time
...Never ending amounts of cobblestone can be gained by just one bucket of lava and one bucket of water
...Cruise ships and pirate boats are forever stationed at the docks
and of course
...Crouching is the best way to "back that thing up"

Okay seriously? Gold is used in everything from computers to airplanes to space shuttles. It's a superb conductor and never rusts. It has many practical uses and is very valuable because of it.
Back on topic:
-you can carry lava around in buckets and use it to kill pigs.
-where you will fall through your boat and destroy it when trying to get out.
-where you will accidentally burn your wooden house down through two layers of stone with magma.
-where you will spend hours underground. Alone. Mining.

5,550 pounds? Craft enough gold blocks to fill your inventory and you're carrying 33 kilotons.

And, I HAVE MORE!
- A 2x2 treasure chest can hold 50 items its size.
