I saw this mighty sketch many times throughout the forum, so I finally decided to build it one or two weeks ago, to create yet another fortress. This one seems really awesome though.
Full disclaimer: I used Inside Job (Invedit) to hack the necessary materials. Yes it's not as awesome, but screw it, this thing is huge. I also used MCEdit to fill the moat with water and the walls with lava because I couldn't do it right by hand and was becoming crazy. Otherwise I did it by hand, which also nearly turned me insane after dying over 9000 times (and because of the sheer size of the fortress itself, I'm not used to that).
The walls sometimes go as much as 34 blocks underground, so it adds to the size of the castle. I should have made them in obsidian underground though, maybe later...
So here's the skeleton, for now (here's a slideshow if you want)

The drawbridge (I don't use the mod to make real drawbridges for now)

So, as you can see, only the walls are up basically. I need to finish... everything. The thing is I don't really know what to do (well, I have a few ideas, but some people here are way more creative than me here). Anyways, even if I don't get suggestions, I'll do what I can and update the thread later.
So, I had time to build a bit today. I added the roof of the three towers (Yes, that is a massive gold roof, because I can) and covered the walls encircling the main tower. I also trapped the bridge between the main land and the fortress with TNT. The switch is in the right tower. Here are some more screenshots and an updated link for the world.
I'd really like to get some feedback or suggestions this time. Even if you find this terribly ugly, I'd be glad to know what I could possibly change. I also don't really know what to build between the different walls.
because all of those people of which you speak are your typical 14 year old on 4chan who have no sense of humor beyond "U LOST THE GAME" and a bunch of retarded pictures
YOU, SIR, DO NOT KNOW THE INTERNET.
You are also mad. Stop being so mad.
Eh, he's referring to the fact you used INVedit to get the materials.
I've seen those plans before, too, and I always wondered what the finished project would look like ingame. Now I know, and for that I thank you.
BTW, the gold roof was a nice touch.
indeed

Well, sorry then, I misunderstood you.
Thanks for the kind words anyway. I don't have a lot of time right now to build because of my studies, but I'll try to add some defensive platforms on the edges of the first wall (with the lava) and maybe wire the double doors soon. Next will be some farms I think, or other facilities, a minecart subway station and eventually the interior of the main tower.
looks pretty cool so far :wink.gif: there should a topic around with stuff you can add to a base. It includes things like incinerators, sewers, cobble generators, tree farm, wheat farm, etc, etc. It has like 30 or so different things that could be useful/cool in a base, so if you can find that topic you'll have plenty of ideas ^^
Thanks. Yeah I know that topic, I already used it a lot for my main base. It will be very useful for the interior mainly, indeed.
Some of the design choices seem illogical. I mean, you have the lava walls to theoretically keep out intruders, right? Same with the multiple locking doors and the TNT charges?
Then why do you have the lava on only two axes?
I think it should be a dome. Giant domes look cool. Gold block roofs look cliche.
I don't understand. The lava covers every possible access to the fortress, and it goes as deep as 20 or 30 blocks if I recall correctly. You just can't dig under the wall, except if you go very deep (I may change the depth to 64 blocks though).
I'll try to make a dome, you made me realize the roof is really... basic. I'll try different materials to make it look good.

I always imagine this as more of a towar... Well its still really awesome. Im glad somebody finally built it, Ive always wondered how this would look.
I thought of making a giant tower too, but I made a 3D model before and I found out I prefer it like that, kind of low but going progressively higher. When I'm finished with this project, I might duplicate it with MCEdit and do a tower to see (by hand, as always), if I'm not too lazy.
I'll try to build a bit more tonight,if I have some free time.
So, I built a bit more today and I think I'm seeing the end of my first big project. The space between the first and the second wall is laid out. I also added barracks in the corners, with a flat space at the top to defend the castle. There is 2 chests in each barrack, filled with armor and ammo. I started developping the main tower, but only the antechamber and the subway station (I chose to copy this one, it's way better than the one I did myself and built by a fellow frenchman) are done for now. I updated the save, again (you can find the link in my first post).
Some more screenshots:
The first space between the walls (there is a secret stash behind the reeds).
The path between the barracks.
One of the barracks. Yes, it's small, and yes, these are beds.
A shot from the top of one of the barracks.
The checkerboard floor of the antechamber.
The automated subway station, in a closed loop for now. The walls are *very* unstable, because of all the sand and the lava. I'll deal with it later.
Well, I finally finished the fortress tonight. I completed the main tower and the last space between it and the other wall. I must say that I'm really happy with what I built, as it is my first really big project. Building it by hand (even with INVEdit, and MCEdit for the lava and water) was also a nice challenge.
I couldn't build as much things as I would have liked because, inside, the fortress is actually quite small ! So, for the main tower, I only added a subway station, a storage room, a living-room, a bedroom and an observation spot at the top. I also modified the roof, I made it rounder and basically nicer. Outside, there is an archery range which is not very big - I just couldn't build it bigger - two benches, some flowers...
Well, now that it is finished, I hope you'll enjoy it (and that I didn't forget anything). Here's the final save and the obligatory pictures:
The main tower's entrance
A ... bench
The archery range
The living-room (with paintings by Monet)
The storage room (the grey tiles are furnaces)
First view of the master bedroom (again with Monet's paintings)
fantastic. If it wasn't for my cramped schedule, i would be building things like this. maybe not as decorated or ingenious, but big fortresses and castles.

I while back, I was designing my own fortress, and used that as one of many starting points.
Old screenshot is terribly old.
Mine uses 4 times the area as the one in the original design, giving more room to work with. However it also made it difficult to finish. I also made the inner chambers a lot different. Where the design calls for two squares, I used one circle. Unfortunately, I got bored of the castle and never finished it.
It's interesting to see what kinda of weird alterations people can do when using the same original idea.

do you have a final schematic? I'm terribly lazy.
too old to play, too young to quit
I forgot to update the schematic. Here you go.

I like my entrance towers better.
I do like the base, with some kind of pattern, of your entrance towers. I prefer towers with a roof though.
