I usually start by punching down a few trees, then making a wooden
axe and getting ALOT more trees. Once i have at least 2 full stacks of
wood planks, i build a small house, without a roof. Then i go get as
much wood as possible before its night. Then i hide in my house and
sorta cheat by opening the inventory, which releases the mouse, and
waiting for day to come while doing something else. When its day, i go
find some coal, usually just looking for a mountain with a lot of stone
sticking out, and then digging right thru it in hopes of coal. I then
build a furnace, and the next day get some sand, which i smelt into
glass and finally make a roof for my house. After that i try to get some
food, and if i cant find pigs i make a giant farm that grows .
Usually i cover it with as much glass as possible, and put a lot of
torches down where possible. after i get some food, i try to find a
cave. If i find one, then i get some resources from it and go branch
mining. If i dont find one i go branch mining right away. All my worlds
before i played on peaceful, but now its getting a bit boring so im
playing on easy, and dying too much. Also, if i get really pissed at
something, i delete the world and start a new one. That happened to me a
few days ago-i went mining into a cave and my game started lagging, and while i stood right next to lava i saved and reloaded. Guess what happenned? When i loaded, i was standing in lava... and i lost 7 Dimonds, 17 Iron, and like 50 coal. So i got mad and made a new world. Also, sometimes i just explore for very long times, which is why some of my maps are like 20 MB. Finally i dont use mods, except INVEdit on my second world just to test stuff, and recently i got the painterly pack because i was bored. Also im obsessed with minecarts, most of my iron goes into making track. Oh, and im a n00b at redstone. Thats all i think.
I build on peaceful, and play on easy. I go download INVedit for projects that require lots of dirt and/or buckets of lava, like my floating island, which required LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of dirt, as well as 64 buckets of lava. I hunt mobs with a bow and fishing rod, which is as amusing as it sounds.
The thing is, I don't feel there are enough mobs in any one place to make interesting hunting, and I don't know what to do when not building. So, half the time, I guess I walk around in circles in peaceful looking for something to do.
I use three save files:
One used mostly on peaceful, as I've built many structures some of which use glass.
One used never on peaceful, in which I play entirely in "vanilla" mode.
One in which I use MineEdit. Mostly for building stuff that basically requires cheating, like enormous cannons.
I'm not a **** about game modes and hacks, so I play however I want - peaceful, easy, normal, hard; INVedit, cartographers; I never build wooden houses unless I'm hacking in wood, because it's a weak material against creeper explosions and I like my fireplaces. Occasionally, I'll do wood floors. Also, I don't like destroying a crapload of trees and making my landscape look like ****. I replant every tree I destroy and attempt to make a tree farm whenever I can. Either that, or I keep planting trees around my house and only destroy the little trees, replanting them until I get big trees (and yes, I do know that you can force a tree to grow big). I usually mine a shaft down to the bedrock as soon as possible, straight down with ladders and candles alternating each block. Once there, I go up ten blocks or so and look for diamonds. I don't like mining, however, as it's an absolute chore. I prefer spelunking, and setting up sub-bases with wheat farms, tree farms, sometimes cactus farms, and basically try to make is so that I can be self-sufficient underground. I only mine gold if it's in my way. Sometimes, I don't even build a house on the surface until I have a ton of cobblestone from going underground. My current world 3 is beautiful, and I therefore have no intention of turning it into some cheesy project. My spawn point has no buildings near it. I only make what I need: a workbench, some chests, a few squares of tilled dirt for crops... I can hang out there at night without any mobs coming at me, and if they do, I can climb up in a tree or fight them. The hardest part of that map is finding places to build, because everything around it looks awesome. I eventually decided to level the top of a mountain and putting my building up there. I'll likely build an elevator inside the mountain to get up to the base, and another one next to it to get down to adminium. Either way, the map generator makes things that look way better than anything I could ever make, so my philosophy is not to build unless the area looks like complete junk or I have to compromise because everything looks good.
The funnest part is when you just start out, so I just do that over and over (once I find diamonds around the second day I'm pretty much done with the map)
I've been using map editors to make the beginning more interesting, like starting out in a desert with no trees or on small islands surrounded by lava.
I really don't see the point once you're in control of the mobs.

I've been spending WAY too much time on The Art of Trolling.

Creeper pig, Creeper pig.
Does whatever a Creeper pig does.
Can he swing from a web?
No he can't,
There not implemented yet...

I spend almost all my time underground, whether for mining, spelunking, or building. And I've recently realized that I have yet to build a base.
