I couldn't find my base, but with my brand new compass I got to my spawn point right as it was getting dark. I built a small dirt fort, and figured 'what the heck, dig'. I had no wood or iron handy, so I didn't bother building a door, I just put up some cobble to seal the entry.
I hit a very, very complex dungeon right beneath my fort. Maybe 15 blocks down. It had at least three ways to get into every room that I could see. It was my first time spelunking in this game, but hey, I'm super awesome good at Quake and have iron armor, iron weapons, a compass, and tons of cooked pork, so I should be able to handle these silly creatures no problem, right?
Anyone see where this is going? Of course, I died. Then, I respawned on sand, outside my base. In the middle of the night. And my fort was sealed up with cobblestone, and swarming with mobs.

I died six times in the span of two minutes. The first time, a creeper was waiting next to me on my spawn. When he blew up, all the sand around my spawn collapsed between 2-4 tiles deep in a 5-6 block radius. Oh, dungeons, right beneath everything. That's why there were so damn many mobs.
I respawned again, and started running. Right as I get killed by 2 spiders, I see an open hole in the ground, with a spawner inside. Another dungeon. Righteous.
I run to solid ground, dig down three spaces, and put up a block above my head. Or, I almost did twice, but spiders and creepers had other ideas. I finally succeeded on my third time. As I type this, my poor dude is shivering in a mud hole with swarming monsters everywhere and oh god it's bad.
If you wanted to survive and get the monsters out the way you could always throw it on peaceful until you reach your base. IMO that's not cheating much as you've already died and lost your stuff in the pit of doom...although it is kind of cheating if you ran in and got your loot back rather than letting the monsters keep it
