The trick is you have to make the endless fire first and then place the wool around it. The wool/wood/house will never burn! It's lasted for 2 days, 2 game restart, and a far off trip.
To make endless fire you either just use hellstone from the nether (one the right in the pic) or make a pit and place wood/wool in it and keep trying until you get endless fire (on the left in the pic)

I forgot to say that only new fire will spread, but not old fire.

Im going to have to test this. I just made about 10 small fireplaces thanks to hellstone. Lets see how long they last.
With the 10 hellstone fireplaces not one of the burnt the wool around/above them after 5 full exits from MC (saved, quit the game, and closed the window)
It might be a rare thing but hellstone seems to be working just fine. Didn't try it with a burning log or wool block though, maybe that's what bugged seeing that is a bug to start with.
If anyone loses a house to one of these fireplaces feel free to blame it on me. But remember, you have to have the fire FIRST then build around it.
I like the bunker you made for the wool fireplace.
That's level B2 of my house. My house is 10 levels high and has 3 basement levels.
10 is my minecart station
2-9 are not used at the moment. Their going to be farms, art studios, and what ever I can think of.
1 is the lobby
B1 is storage and furnace
B2 is my work shop/testing area
B3 is the portal room and diamond mine access.
Ok after an entire day of on and off play the wool fireplaces using hellstone fire are still working just fine. Not one of the 10 fireplaces has lost a single wool block.
Im going ahead and calling this safe for any house. Also if you want to add a fireplace to a house late just surround the area 2 blocks high with dirt/stone/sand and have nothing that can be burnt by the window used to light the hellstone. After that wait about 5 secs and then you can safely remove the wall.
I even tried to "restart" the fire with a switch and red dust, red torches as well, and nothing happened to the wool/wood next or on top of the fire.
