I wanted to make a tutorial on something Minecraft related, and since legitimately getting records is sometimes hard to get, I thought I'll make one on it.
There are currently three ways to obtain a record besides hacking:
1. Get a skeleton to kill a creeper
2. Find one in a dungeon
3. Rare chance a creeper will drop one on its own Note: There is a chance to obtain either a gold record or a green record. You may have to try the method multiple times if you don't get the record you want. This probability of getting a green or gold record applies to all methods.
Since finding a record in a dungeon is almost as rare as finding one in the first place, this tutorial will show you how to effectively get a skeleton to kill a creeper. It sounds tricky, but if certain precautions are made, it's actually not that hard at all. With this technique I'm about to show you, you could technically obtain a record with no equipment, but it is extremely difficult to do. So, you should have these items if you want to have a chance at success:
A Diamond Sword
Armor (Better armor is of course, better)
Bow and Arrow
Food (Keep the food in your quick-use panel; eat it if things get hairy)
A shovel
A base of operations (Aka, a well lit place in which you can guarantee no mobs will spawn. The larger the area, the better)
GOAL: The method I use to easily obtain records is to first of course, weaken a creeper, then trap it in a pit. Afterwards, lure a nearby skeleton in which you can trick the skeleton into shooting the creeper.
Step 1: At morning, dig a hole that is two blocks deep. It can be as wide as you want, but not too wide. The wider the hole is, the more easily you can trick the creeper into falling in it, however, if the hole is too wide, it might be difficult for the skeleton to hit the creeper once it's trapped. A wider hole also means less room to navigate, and you don't want to fall in by accident. Also, you should keep your difficulty on normal. A moderate amount of enemies should spawn then, and too many or too little mobs could work against you.
Make sure there is enough room around the hole. You should have the hole near or on the border of your base. (Fort, Castle, whatever) You also need to make sure there is no obstructions near it (Trees/steep mountains/Other large pits) The more room you have, the easier it will be to navigate. And if things don't go as you planned, no obstructions means you should have a clean get away. If your not as experienced with minecraft, give yourself as much wide open space as you can.
Step 2: Once morning starts to end, go as far as you can from the hole; hopefully as long as its safe. If you are close at all to your small trap, then enemies won't spawn, even in pitch black. If you are far away, wait until day completely ends and night kicks in. Then you can go to your trap and hopefully enemies will be nearby. If not, leave and come back.
Step 3: Now you must find a creeper. Preferably one that is alone and where you can easily approach it. Make sure you watch out for other enemies and creepers, you will want to make sure you deal with those first so you have no trouble luring the creeper. At this point you can weaken the creeper, or you can trap it first before you weaken it. The choice is yours. However, to weaken the creeper so it only has 1 hit point left, you will of course need to know how damaging your weapons are. All hostile enemies, including creepers, have 20 hit points, so keep that in mind.
Diamond Sword: 10 dmg
Arrow: 4 dmg
Hands/Nonweapons: 1 dmg (Note: Other tools have unique damage depending on what material it's made from, and what tool it is. Swords are the best, while axes come in second. I don't know the specific damage each other tool does, but you shouldn't need to dive into that)
So essentially, you should hit the creeper once with the sword, and then hit it twice with the bow and arrow. (Or vise versa) The creeper will now only have 2 HP left and now all you need is a skeleton to finish it off. (You can hit it once with your hands afterwards if you want. Heh.) You need to be sure that the skeleton arrow will kill off the creeper. If it doesn't, the creeper might get knocked out of the hole and explode.
Step 4: Finally you must find a skeleton, preferably alone and try not to reenact whats happening below.
More enemies you attract = a harder time. I nearly got mauled by the two skeletons and the spider although one skeleton was able to hit the creeper, killing it. If you mess up, retreat and kill off the enemies who are following you. Then try again. However, if you manage to attract only one skeleton, make sure it is a good distance away from your trap. Once it sees you and starts chasing you, run back behind the hole. The trapped creeper of course won't be able to harm you unless you go too close to it. Or you fall in. Which is bad.
Now it's just a matter of luck. Naturally, when the skeleton shoots the first arrow it will miss and fall straight down, and hopefully it will land on the creeper. If it misses, circle strafe around the hole and the skeleton should eventually shoot the creeper by mistake. The creeper will also jump up and down (unable to escape the hole) and it should improve your chances of the skeleton shooting it. Alternatively, you can also trap the skeleton with the creeper.
If you finally succeed, (preferably) kill off the skeleton that was so kind to help you and do a happy dance. Of course, make sure there are no enemies around when you go in the pit to obtain your record.
Oh, well I got a record, not a stone, how do I turn the record into a stone?
The schematics I have displayed shows a diamond surrounded by planks, if you make this in your crafting table you will get a jukebox, when you have placed the jukebox on the ground somewhere you select the record and then rightclick the jukebox.
I have tried
Where = record. It does not show up in the crafting table.
DivaythFyr, you cannot play records if you don't have a record player. To craft a record player, you need to assemble what's shown above. The blue thing is a diamond; it's a rare gem that you need to mine deep underground. You cannot turn the record into a stone/diamond silly.
Once you have crafted a record player, place the record player on the world. Then, while holding the record, right click the record player. Then music should play.
Is it really that involved? Seems like more trouble than it's worth.
I read about the infighting trick on the wiki, so I started up the game on a new map, set up a small base, went out at night, and within two minutes I'd attracted both mobs and I stood by a low tree:

The skeleton kept shooting the creeper and it got caught on the leaves. Record!

Are you certain you have to have the creeper killed by a skeleton? I finally got a record yesterday after killing tons of creepers in my world, and I'm fairly certain the creeper that dropped it wasn't killed by a skeleton.
Tip: if you make the hole deep (I'm not sure how deep exactly) and get a skeleton to fall in along with the creeper, the skeleton's arrows will not reach you, and usually fall back down onto someone's head instead. Apparently, skeletons' arrows don't go nearly as far as your own.

They way that I heard it works is that a creeper can drop a record when killed by the player, but it's really rare.
Believe it or not, I got a gold record from killing a creeper. No infighting is required, contrary to popular belief.

Yeah, that's what he was saying. You can get it as a normal drop from killing them yourself (just like how they drop gunpowder - it is a possible drop to get a record, but MOST OF THE TIME, you get gunpowder or nothing). The trick about having them fight each other is that you WILL get a record if the skeleton kills the creeper. Just a more surefire way if you really want one but haven't found any.
I personally found my first just in a random spider dungeon. Sure beats the stockpiles of string and wheat I had been getting. =P
Anyhow, I never used this exact method, but it certainly would work. Good job on the tutorial. =)
Got a creeper stuck in the hole but I was damaged by some other mobs. So I went harvesting bacon. Heard a Ssss behind me and dodged. Survived and went back to the pit. The pit was empty.
Second attempt pit 3 deep. Caught another creeper, in the pit but forgot to damage him. Got a Skeleton close by and he fell in the pit. Skeleton hit creeper and then boom, no more Skeleton or Creeper.

Since the wiki page is down how do I go about making the jukebox?

Ah, so it's a real diamond, as I suspected.
Believe it or not, I got a gold record from killing a creeper. No infighting is required, contrary to popular belief.
The creeper knows its fate. Poor thing.
I do maps and stuff.
