Look at you, you're like a child. You can't do things yourself so you want to be spoon fed. Please, for the love of god DO do this. Light is the most important resource in the game, and if you're too lazy to go to a pretty dangerous area for the most important resource in the game, have fun relighting all your torches every night. If it's THAT difficult for you, just use invedit or put the game on peaceful and mine your lightstone. I mean, come on, it's not that hard at all, you just don't want to do something a little extra for a big reward.
Also, i'd like to direct you to a better way of saying this:
Complaining this early, before the full materials for lanterns are released, seems.....silly.
Now, if Notch gives details, and lanterns cost 64 lightstone blocks (or something) PER LANTERN, then, I agree, it would be a tad outrageous.
Honestly, it is as if Notch is making our current torches more difficult to make, then give us a temporary lightsource to tide us over until we can make the permanent lights.
As someone who frequently restarts new games (i delete a file if I die three times), I look forward to this temporary light source (new torches) for early game--especially when your 10min long nights are filled with sitting and doing nothing, when you are first starting out. it gives one more thing to do, one more thing to micromanage. I enjoy it, and I feel it will give the game a more progressive flow.
However, if lantern costs are ridiculous, I may change my mind.
Yes, I agree with you. Torches are primordial, but have never seemed out of place in Minecraft. But I really don't think Notch will do the lantern thing. He announced it months ago, and not much has changed.
Keep the light burning.

The iteration of these lines brings gold;
The framing of this circle on the ground
Brings whirlwinds, tempests, thunder and lightning.
Because he broke all sorts of other stuff since then.
Bug fixing > Adding stuff
Excuse me, did this game enter Beta while I wasn't looking?
Nope...it's still in Alpha.
Therefore: Adding stuff > Bug fixing
Move along, now.

Yaaaaaaay a torch thread! They're like zombies, they never ever die for good. 9____________9
People claiming they won't play anymore over changes that haven't occurred yet, in a game that's still in development, using nothing but speculation. I <3 this community. Or you could, IDK, WAIT AND SEE HOW IT IS FIRST. Revolutionary concept, I know, but it could work! If you don't like it after you see it, then you can report issues or ragequit, but at least find out first; don't get peepants over something that isn't even in the game yet. Maybe if these were major changes being added to a game that was finished, all the QQ might even make sense, but that's not the case here.

Every time I come to these forums, I think more and more that I'm the only person who plays Minecraft normally.

But yeah, all complaints and discussion goes to the lantern thread.
