How do you stop a forest fire once it starts, it is going everywhere
Assuming it's got to the point where it's out of control? Nothing. It's pretty much a lost cause. Let it burn out on its own. Alternatively you could try doing a "cut back" where you attempt to destroy any flammable blocks it could connect to somewhere in its path, but you really have to be on the ball to get this done. You could also try creating a wall of water, but again, this is difficult. I accidentally set an entire forest on fire recently and I just let it burn, then collected all the left-over wood and am currently in the process of reforestation.

Spark becomes a flame.
Flame becomes a fire.
Forge a blade to slay the stranger.
Take whatever we desire.
Move by will alone.
Cut Fire breaks around things you want to protect. Make sure they is at least 3 blocks gap both vertical and horizontal.
I accidentally set a wooden palisade on fire, and was able to get ahead of the flame and cut a fire break into it. That was much easier than a forest fire though. On a wooden wall its very easy to predict where the fire will go. In a forest it goes everywhere!

If it's a naturally occuring fire you need to find the source of the lava and block off the source block.
In any case you can contain one or more sections of the fire by building a wall of nonflammable material a few block up and over from the burn. Alternatively you can protect individual trees or structure by walling them off. Sand is very fire resistant, it will not light ever.
I think it's been mentioned before that you can keep the fire from spreading by chopping down trees you're afraid the fire will spread to, in that case you will still have to replant them so it might be easier to just let them burn.
If none of your builds are in jeopardy and you don't have a lava flow causing a permanent problem you might as well just let it burn.
