Been searching for rare items for hours and hours? Then this guide is for you.
This does not involve Paintshop or anything, you can just use basic paint.
1. Get your map normal from cartographer. It should show the surface.
2. Use cartographer and pick a number. Redstone ore blocks are 73, diamond ore is 56, gold ore is 14.
(Full list is here: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Block_Numbers
3. On the map in 2, find a spot with whatever material you are searching for.
4. Look at its coordinates. (###, ###)
5. Go to the map in 1. Find those same coordinates on it, and using red or some other easily-noticeable color make a dot there. In my case, I had 8 blocks next to each other.
6. Dig down there and find it. If you have to travel a far way from your house, travel in a straight line, or leave a line of torches from your current location to your house.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is also a secret I found using redstone powder. Using NBTForge, make a large area (maybe 10 by 10) of redstone POWDER, and have it be 3 or 4 layers high. In the game, if you delete just ONE powder, your game will crash. Reload, and the entire area of powder you can collect, while you can do it again and again, because the rest of the powder stays in place.

Only the hundred millionth tutorial like this...
I prefer to search underground for ores, as cartographing the game ruins the mystique of the caves..... I only use cartographer to find large caves, so I dont have to search for hours... but I still manually search for caves most of the time......

Matt, seriously, stop trolling. So can you please shut the **** up and go troll the infdev forums about how much you want to get 10 bucks from your hobo house?
It is for people who have searched and searched and are going crazy.
maybe those people should grow some balls/do some reasearch/search near the bottom of the map/look near lava instead.

On my last trip through a (admittedly large) cave system, i found 9 diamond, 12 gold, 2 stacks of Redstone, 2 1/2 stacks of coal, and a stack of iron.
It isn't really hard.
Found 4 stacks in one, I had to drop one stack though because I found my first diamond :biggrin.gif:
And my head hurts so I prolly can't read but I saw no use of paint in it..
He doesn't say to actually open them in paint, but i guess it's assumed you just use mspaint.
In the larger cave systems (Because I get woefully lost.) I'll end up making mini-bases in certain areas. (Simple Workbench, and furnace.) I usually just put a stack in each furnace i make, and forget it. So that coal count is just what I came OUT with. Coal is very plentiful. I've got so much redstone now, it's time to start playing around with it.

I mean to use cartographer to edit the images in paint, and mark on your map where the thing you are looking for is. It doesn't require paintshop, just microsoft paint, which is easier.

Yeah, I knew that someplace I needed to use paint, my head just hurt so it was confusing me.
And it's Photoshop, not Paintshop. I nitpick, it's why I make all my houses even numbered with blocks so there's even space in between all the torches

I develop games then lose the code and fail to release them.
lol @ the link taking you to the wikipedia hacking page.
On-Topic guys it's not that hard, what I do, Is i put all my valuable stuff away into my house, then I just take a sword, and some pickaxes and some torches and I find a random spot and dig down, dig down till I hit A: Lava and die or B:Admin blocks. THen when you hit admin block, dig out atleast a 4x4 room, to make sure you havnt missed anything just 1 block away from you hole, then if you found nothing, go to the entrance to your hole, and jump up while looking down, get out the stone you've picked up on the way down, and spam right click and space and you'll eventually get back out. So if you had no success on the first try, find other location preferablly not right next to each other. And do the same thing. I did this and 1st try was a fail. I did it again in a diff location, found 32 redstone, near admin blocks, 4 iron along the way down and 2 diamond next to the admin blocks.\
Sorry for the brick wall of text.
I typed this really fast, expect some spelling errors

Sure it won't show anything completely hidden by stone but it makes finding stuff in caves easier.
