Graph paper and a pencil! Wow, that's ****ing brilliant! Why didn't I think of that! Holy ****, you should run for office!
Jesus guys...what century do we live in? I'm looking for a computer program to assist with the planning of my buildings in Minecraft. The question was worded appropriatly. I don't want a program that builds **** for me. Christ.
Jzel (thank you) answered me...the rest of you guys can move on...nothing to see here or troll about any further.

Im going to go out on a limb here and say that was slight sarcastic and angry.
You could get a program, learn how to use it. and finally after a few hours finish that sketch of the mediocre project you were planning.
or you could get a piece of paper and color in the lines, you were taught that around 1st grade. but since you seem initially hostile im going to assume you where that kid who just got pissed and scribbled in crayon complaining about how your mommy didnt get the right juice box flavor.
Seriously people were suggesting a method that works pretty damn well, ever wonder how architects started building? with a pencil and paper, why? because it worked. your playing with blocks you dont need and architecture program to calculate the exact angle of your completely square blocks.
Just use MS Paint, zoomed in with the gridlines on.
If you're looking for specific dimensions, it tells you how big your shapes are on the bottom left.
If your fortress is symmetric, you only need to design three sides of it: the top, front, and right side.
I made a 50x50 Sky Haven with four towers and a circular garden just using an eagle eye view sketch I made in two minutes.
Five hours vs. two minutes, I'd go with the shorter and more reasonable solution.
I've seen blue-prints made out of emotes on this website, so MS Paint should be no problem.
You don't need a 3D render of a building before you design it.
And if you want to get technical, use a CAD program. But like "not_a_creeper" said:

And it takes time (and money) to become experienced in CAD.
PS: Not trying to be rude.

Look at Lego building software and cut the snark.
Personally, I use a graph notebook and it has worked fine for me.
I'm looking for a program to assist in the creation of my fortress. Basically a program that allows for the placement of blocks to simulate my design.
Is there such a thing? I have found a few online but they have been either very expensive or inadequate.
Thanks for any responses/ideas.
So you bought a game so that you could have a program play it for you and the game isnt even competitive?
wtf....

If you're looking for something that's directly Minecraft-designed, well, MCedit is about as good as it gets.

but it would have taken like 20 mins to make something like that in minecraft
