Personally, planning on making a spiral dirt staircase down to the bottom, keeping it both exposed the sun, and well lighting it during the night.
If not that... another idea just popped in mind. Just alternate tiles of the wall of the shaft. Since grass can jump 2 z-levels. And just use a ladder to transverse up and down.
SIDE VIEW:
Not a bad idea, aesthetically. It's definitely possible too- in fact, some people have even gotten trees to grow underground by putting a torch on all four sides of the sapling.
Also, the torches for grass really aren't necessary unless you're going to seal off the top. Grass stays alive at night outside, and if there's a glass ceiling letting light in it'll do the same in a cave.

Yup, I'm planning the seal the shaft back up after I do it... or turn it into a waterfall. <_<
And yes, this is purely aesthetics, since I want grass with my trees.
Yes, it works. I had a central ladder shaft down to bedrock. I alternated between two sides of the shaft all the way down. Basically alternated digging out two blocks to side of ladder, then two blocks on wall opposite ladder. Then filled bottom space with dirt. Brought grass up to edge of stairs at ground level. It does take a while to jump all the way down, but it will.
I dug out a large open area at level 17 and carpeted the floor with dirt/grass with torches every 5 spaces. Now, while mining on levels 5-16, when I hear animal sounds, I go up an slaughter. I'm building up quite the inventory.
I've built tree farms there as well. Once established, you never have to go up... :smile.gif:
Do not wallow do not stall
Time waits for none at all
Your allowance may crawl,
It may fly or even vanish
But none will seem more lavished
Than time lost to all.

I'll post some pics this evening.
Can you show us your tree farm and explain how you made it? All your stuff is very cool, I'm trying to get my place like that too...
But I must ask, has anyone attempted growing grass near the bedrock layer? And if so, any tips or advise.

Can't wait to see the pics as well. :happy.gif:
