I'll admit, I too pirated the game back when InfDev had just got the doors. I enjoyed Creative, and once I played InDev, for maybe a month, and finally convincing my mom to let me buy it, I deleted the pirated one as it was causing grief as it was also designed to be a client for premium users too, and now I'm glad I spent the $15 CAD or so for this.
Also, to _illusionist, read Notch's blog post on this.
If someone pirates Minecraft instead of buying it, it means I’ve lost some “potential” revenue. Not actual revenue, as I can never go into debt by people pirating the game too much, but I might’ve made even more if that person had bought the game instead. But what if that person likes that game, talks about it to his or her friends, and then I manage to convince three of them to buy the game? I’d make three actual sales instead of blocking out the potentially missed sale of the original person which never cost me any money in the first case.
Instead of just relying on guilt tripping pirates into buying, or wasting time and money trying to stop them, I can offer online-only services that actually add to the game experience. Online level saving, centralized skins, friends lists and secure name verification for multiplayer. None of these features can be accessed by people with pirated versions of the game, and hopefully they can be features that turn pirates from thieves into potential customers.
Sorry, But ur Post was Reported, Have Fun Playing Illegal Software and being banned.

It's true. Notch is a great updater. I do read the blogs and I think he made that when he read this post o.O (Possibly)
Also guys lets get realistic. If lets say "Egypt" because this guy is caring about it so much makes $120 a month, how the hell do they even have...
1.) Internet
2.) Computer
3.) Electricity
4.) A strong enough RAM for Minecraft.

1.) Internet
Could be highly priced but if you're not always online it might be usable once in a while. Dunno how old you are but I paid a lot of money for some hours per month.

2.) Computer
..aren't that expensive anymore. You can get a nice one (for music/video/surfing & office) for about 40 USD plus an old screen.

3.) Electricity
Should be cheaper then here. And if not you should think about the fact that they use way less power than we do. Take a look at your bill and substract: Your big screen TV, tv receiver, hifi, multiple halogen lights, maybe electrical water heating, dish washer, washing machine, big freezer and so on.

Now that's a good point but I guess you can play MC with one of those 30 - 40 USD PCs I meant. They've got up to 2 Ghz (P4) and 512 - 1GB of Ram. That should make it playable.
i almost want to send out a fake pirate of this game (claim it is but it isnt) and attach a huge virus that makes ur pc garbage and u need to reinstall ur op to all the fags who wont buy the game.. ITS ABOUT $10 STOP BEING CHEAP AND HURTING A INDIE DEVELOPER.
Let's take a step back. Pirating isn't always bad and, in this case, it seems to be doing MC a service (at least according to Notch), that service being free advertising. Suppose a friend pirates the game, so thats one person who doesn't buy it (but also a person who probably wouldn't buy it anyway, so no harm done). That person tells their 3 friends about the game, who decide to buy it. Thats 3 ACTUAL transactions being made, while 1 POSSIBLE (probably not even likely) transaction not made. 3 sales per 1 "loss" is actually a good ratio.
So before pulling out your sword and waging a war on pirates, consider the practice from different angles.
Reply to OP: It's a bad idea to remove offline single player, as many others here have said. I don't really feel it necessary to repeat these points at this time.

So... I was building my HUGE dickbridge across the universe, when I stopped to get some more wood.
It's come to my attention that it is so easy to play minecraft alpha singleplayer for free.
When I typed my password in incorrect it still showed that I could play offline.
ONE person can pay for the game and spread the client of minecraft throughout the web. It has already been done and its expanding because of how easy it is to get minecraft single player offline for free.
My suggestion is disable singleplayer offline. You MUST be logged into a premium account to play singleplayer.
this is why notch has no money to pay for his coffee in the morning
It would be a complete waste of time for the only developer the game has. I can think of a billion things more important right now then implementing DRM that would be cracked regardless.
Also, if single player was disabled I'd ask for a refund. It's the sole reason I bought the game.

Some people just can't understand the fact that .... There're other people living outside the US and Europe with a lower income !
I live in Thailand and it's reasonably priced here. The only barrier to buying Minecraft would be the fact that you need to deal with PayPal and that the game is in English.

If he really wants to throw some heavy DRM on, imho Steam is the best method.
Then the game would no longer work on Linux which is what I mostly play on.

Really? Multiple halogen lights? Where the hell do you live, a football stadium? No one uses halogen lights in their house. They are all fluorescent which cost pennies to operate.

No thanks, that will only hurt the legit players more than it will hurt the pirates. They will just release a crack or whatever to it a week later.
a week? maybe 5 minutes. It is a java game, it is easy to crack it. And if he want to add complex protections, he will have to do it for each platform, which mean that the game probably won't be crossed-platformed anymore, and still, it will be cracked.
Notch has mentioned already knowing something about this and that he intends to make buyers have perks one cannot gain access to, so Eh. I'll lock the topic because people seem to be getting into a tizzy over this, but this is more of a bug within the program itself instead of advertising a way around the system. He's even suggesting a way to fix it.

Edit: Fixed the quote, and a stupid typo. >.<
