I'm not sure if this is common knowledge or not, I searched for it and got no results, anyways... I was trying to build and underwater base earlier today and after ironing out the kinks, I decided that the entrance (which involed smimming underneath the base then swimming up through a hole) needed a ladder. So I placed a ladder on the first submerged block and the water retreated. I was curoius abotu this so I placed a ladder the the block immeadietly below it and the water again retreated, I climbed down and saw that the water just stopped. It didn't move at all around the block in which the ladder was placed, this created a strange pocket of air. I tested this out more and I finally came to my conclusion that ladders, when placed underwater, created a 1x1 air pocket, this can be useful for underwater exploration or just messing around. I don't have any pics because I'm not quite sure how to take them.

tl;dr ladders repel water.

Why stop at the melee? Just admit (Halo) Reach itself was a mistake. It is, really. The Hindenburg was less broken than this.
wasn't really sure, as it is an addon to a block that created an air pocket, I had expected the ladder to just sit thier underwater to allow me to more easily climb up.

Yep, object that appear to take up less than the whole block still occupy that entire space. This means that doors (even open ones) prevent water flowing through as well. Ladders are often used to create an air tunnel down to underwater bases, which are then sealed with a door to prevent water entering the base. Congrats on finding this yourself though, as it is not necessarily common knowledge.
