Gold and Diamond probably isn't implemented, but if you dig down far enough you'll hit tons and tons of iron and coal. It's plentiful ^^
What I did was I built a stairway as far down as i could until I hit that lava thing where if you try to jump in it, you'll fall off the island (O_o)
But yeah, I hit tons of coal and iron on my way down.
A simple way to find iron is to mine around the ocean level. That is where I found all of mine iron, I have probably found around 100 blocks. As of gold and Diamond I am unsure. Though my strategy on staying or going is making lots and lots of out posts where ever I go to store all my goods. It may be a little costly, but I can explore and settle down at the same time.

Not to mention it's just as easy to get supplies in one place and expand outward as needed as it is to keep moving nomadically.
Not for me. Unless I leave some kind of trail I get lost faster than you can say "Where the **** am I?". Moving nomadically is way easier, because I don't care where I've been.
Ladon, here's an idea. When you find a relatively nice area, make a big tall marker so you know where it's at. Then just keep exploring. Eventually you WILL get tired of looking for somethign better, and you will have lots of places to choose from. =D
To tell you the truth, I don't think settling will completely catch on until claim flags are made. Until then, digging for basic ores and cutting trees will be the basic task everyone will do, if not, then highwaymen are gonna be everywhere..
Some people don't get this. I do want to settle down, but I have the mostly correct feeling that some better mountain is just out of sight.
I think I got your issue and my answer is to stop looking for mountains and start looking for floating islands.
The pickings are slim (I mean really slim) I admit but once you find one you'll feel the urge to stay and develop it.
Reason being is once you find a really good one (One that's bigger than 10x10) you'll fee obligated to develop it or at least mess with it.
Though make sure it's over water cause:
A) developing a floating island over land is a *******, especially at night.
:cool.gif: It makes the pickings ALLOT more slim, making them a rare Jem in the sea of land masses. (In fact once multiplayer comes out if I find a good floating island owned by some one I am going to murder them for it... WITH MY CRYSTAL SWORD.. then toss all their belongings, except the ones that can hurt me, outside a window and tell the dude to bugger off... and then summon Land Squids to kill him (In my dreams))
Though if you find one near water build a diving board towards the water.

I bring along my house wherever I go. I just disassemble it with an axe and bring along my crafting station and smelter. I wander around and set it up just before night time, throw my iron in the smelter and then I dig a mine shaft until daylight. pack up and wander some more. only problem is I'm light on storage so I often find myself throwing away half used tools and not have a cache of blocks like I'm used to in indev.

The closest I've had to your problem was when I had built the first prototype of a castle idea. Due to lack of foresight, the size was rather underwhelming. I was wandering back behind it so I could get back inside and add some finishing touches... and then I saw a more promising build spot. Followed it, turned out to be part of a larger thing. Kept following it, and came to anawesomesight.
At the moment, the best reason for settling down is starting a huge building project. Like others have mentioned, it gives you a good center point to return to while gathering resources.
Torches make a good trail at nighttime*. The abundance of coal really helps in that matter. I usually place them on small two-block columns so I can follow them during the day, too.
*I do not look forward to the eventual update that makes them temporary and includes night mobs, though...
I like to settle down and build a settlement, then when I'm happy with it, I branch out and build another settlement nearby, then connect them with a road.
Couldn't do that if I just wandered all the time. I find the ability to branch out at whim to be incredibly freeing. Looking out into the distance and seeing an interesting formation, traveling out to it, building a hut, then creating a nice road and bridge system back to my previous settlements. Can't wait to be able to do this in multiplayer. I love creating roads through the wilderness for some reason, it'll probably be my #1 self-assigned task to build roads between player settlements and points of interest.
Have Height play an advantage in battles then maybe people will want to build on higher ground.. or on a flat terrain to build a small town to remain peaceful.

I've found about 30 gold ore in /infdev/.

That's not true:
There was more, but made some pickaxes and armor
Last ones
