It just seems pretty limited to me, not to mention it was confusing at first and when you first thought "I wanna craft something" I wasnt able to figure it out for myself, I had to go to the wiki.
I just think the whole idea of placing ingredients in a specific pattern to get something is kind of weird. But I cant think of another way for crafting to work. Maybe for things like tools you can craft a handle and an axe head separately and when the tool breaks the axe head just comes off and you can go reattach another axehead to the stick since it also doesnt make sense to me for the handle to just shatter and disappear.

I, personally, don't want the crafting system to get more intricate. It's only fun the first time you craft stuff. After that you just want to get stuff that you can use. But, sure, it could be improved ...
On crafting planks, you can just right click on the planks to pick up a bunch at once. Maybe you were annoyed because you were just dragging sets of 4 at a time? Otherwise, I don't get it. It takes 10 seconds to get 64 planks, and now we get to use logs.

I think it adds a lot of flavor to the game and is more realistic than just randomly finding the items and it gives ores a purpose beyond just building for looks. There are probably some minor tweaks that could be made, maybe a better in-game way to hint at what you can craft and how, especially when you are first starting out.
I assume that the crafting will be explained in the tutorial level(s) that will be added later (hence the unclickable button for it on /indev/). I personally have no issue with it, and find it fun to discover new recipes.

I think its cool how you put them in a certain shape to craft them. Atleast the shapes are logical, in this 1 survivial game (not minecraft) you had 2 slots and if you got them the wrong way around it would eat the ingredients.

No. it fun. I though that too at first, but that was before I got to using it. Pretty much once got into it, i find it make respect your resources more. I want update on it personal.
Peri, you only need trees for wood and wood for a workbench. Then just the resources to make the thing. Not that hard, easier than I.R.L. Also the current crafting system in my opinion is great.

[L] -> [P]
[L] = Logs
[P] = Planks
It's easy.
Anyway, I like the crafting system.
