I feel like it's necessary, otherwise people can just turn up various settings on their monitor to make any darkness bearable without a torch.
Just in case I was unclear, areas that are 100% black would be good. With the new torches reaching out as far as they do, it would not be unreasonable.
Also darkness would be that much more awesome.

I agree. Right now, you can still see well enough at even the darkest darkness level that torches are more of a convenience than a necessity. It should be pitch black in areas where no light penetrates.
Distressingly though, Notch has said that dynamic lighting will be toggle-able via the options menu. This leads me to believe that he intends for darkness to be merely an atmospheric element of the game, rather than a serious game play mechanic. After all, what is the point of skulking in darkness, or building a lightless maze to thwart your opponents, if they can just turn dynamic lighting off and have a clear view of everything?
I am glad I made this thread, then. How many of us are amongst those who want darkness to have an effect on gameplay? I hope that dynamic lighting is only optional
1. In single-player
2. Server-side

A tiny bit of light should penetrate blocks to tell you when you're near the surface. It does need perfect darkness though, and burning mobs should emit light. Also, light a mushroom, the mushroom defeats the flame, and voila! Mushrooms that hurt you and emit light, or invisible fire. Holding a torch should emit light (it might, but I can't be bothered checking, though it probably doesn't).

I can't stop playing Destiny. Someone raid with me damn it.
I'd say servers should have 3 levels, or choices, for darkness
1. No lighting. A normal day, like in creative mode.
2. Darkness, like /indev/ has right now. In "Complete" darkness it is hard, but not impossible, to see.
3. Pitch black. In "Complete" darkness, it is impossible to see.
I serriously want to have pitch black multi-player survival where hiding in the dark to ambush someone is a valid and entertaining tactic.
A pitch black area where you cannot see unless you make light would be awesome. That's what I expect in a cave that has no light source or connection to the surface whatsoever.
And it reminds me of "It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue." People will be eaten by all the survival critters when those re-enter /indev/. Imagine breaching a pitch black cavern and having a dozen creepers jump you. I bet people would go OH SHI-.
I can always see everything in the darkest light. +1
also slowpoke, When you are breaking the dirt block see if any of the little particles have green on them. If it does, it is a grass block, so you are probably on the surface.
Well, because of light reflections, only a room colored pitch black will be pitch black. However there is a point that the light becomes so thin, the human eye can not detect it.I think light should get darker slower and, yes, at some point become pitch black.

While I am completely in favor of Perfect Darkness, I can sort of understand why Notch is of this opinion. Creative mode relies heavily on being able to see what you're doing. Being able to toggle it there is important.
However, I think it shouldn't be togglable in multiplayer, especially Survival. A server option, maybe. And it should be setable in the options for Dungeon mode, whenever that comes out.
But, a caveat on this is that the fog is going to have to be a lot darker underground, too. Not just dark depending on the light levels, but black. If it's far away underground you shouldn't be able to see it anyways.
I totally suppport this. I want perfect darkness, especially in MP. It'd give torches a purpose, and allow for interesting gameplay mechanics.
e.g. CTF, you got a longish corridor that's really dark (or maybe an underground cave) so the enemy has to bring torches, mean they don't have their shield or sword or bows out. They reach a pit (which without torches they'd fall into and die, due to darkness meaning they don't see it). While they decide how to get past it, you ambush, having a large advantage since many of them hhave torches out.
Right now I can stand the darkest darkness without having to change anything on my monitor. I can see a difference between rock and ore, but not what ore it is.
I think that Its good as it is, no need to change.

Lol, I always have pitch darkness.
I don't know what you play, but my /indev/ HAS fully darkness.
And I don't like it much.
(costs too much torches)
See this? This is the problem. Some people have darker monitors, and other people have brighter monitors.
Without perfect darkness there's no way to balance these things, is there?
liq3: That sounds pretty great. I would love to see darkness play such a strong role, have such a strong effect. Imagine getting flooded in the darkness -- torches extinguished, air supply running out. Now that would suck. xD

A theme called "darkness" which makes everything on the map 100% dark. I can imagine the fun of building random cities in complete blackness.
... But that would be awesome! Everyone would have to start with torches or something though to ensure it's not totally unbearable D:

would be really fun to do stuff like that. :]

I'm like a pyromaniac spelunker, and my torches cannot do anything unless affixed to rock.
