I'm looking at purchasing one of A Small Orange's VPS packages, I'm wondering if the 768MB ram package will serve an SMP server that averages 6-7 users, nothing more really.
768mb ram
30gm storage
500gb bandwidth
$50/month
I want ASO because of their customer support, I used to be a shared account user and it was an amazing experience.
I tried HazeNET, I couldn't even connect to their SSH since purchasing, and 2 days later they could not figure it out. Thankfully they sent me a refund.
123systems does not accept instant transfer paypal (i have no credit card)
That is EXTREMELY overpriced, but ya it should hold 6-7 players decent.

There's a reason OpenVZ VPS' are cheaper... Think about it. :wink.gif:

That does seem really over priced. I'd take a look at https://www.photonvps.com/.
I use them, can't say anything about support because I haven't had to use it.
You can get an XEN VPS with 2GB RAM-2GB SWAP, 8 CPU cores, 95GB RAID10 SATA drives, and 1500GB of bandwidth for under $40 a month. It's $41.95 but you can use TENOFF as a coupon and get 10% off for life.
They have a 2GB/s upload and download, and the server comes preinstalled with Apache and all that jazz.
Right now I have a Cloud VPS and am having some issues. If I can't resolve these issues I may switch hosts, but I don't really want to because I love their support.
The web server has 1536mb ram and I limit the SMP server to 1024 using -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M, however once we reach about 6 players the web server kills itself by using all of the ram. The only other thing I have running is Apache for Dynamic Map.
I'm trying -Xmx768M -Xms768M to see how that works out.
I ended up researching PhotonVPS and purchasing their Xen Warp 3 VPS with the TENOFF code.
2 GB Ram
4 GB Swap
8 Core CPU
95 GB HDD space
RAID 10
1.5TB Bandwidth
$37.76 USD /month
Xen servers appear to be a really good choice for minecraft servers, you get the dedicated ram that is advertised, plus a swap 2x the size of your ram.
Switching from my other host was simple, just tar'd up my entire smp server directory and used wget from the new PhotonVPS :smile.gif:
