You guys are so angry about something that doesn't involve you.
Because people don't like thieves. If someone breaks into someone elses house, do you get angry about that or do you just say "That doesn't involve me"? When some terrorist decides to blow up in the middle of somewhere and kills a lot of people, do you just say "That doesn't involve me" and just go on with life? You just don't care?
These guys are trying to stop a thief, which is you in this case. Just take down the site and create everything from scratch. You will feel more accomplised doing that.
I get that it's your work, and you don't want it copied, but wouldn't a more mature way of going about this have been a private message, or email, asking for credit to be given, or asking it be taken down that way? I don't know, it's not for me to say, I just lose a lot of respect for someone who goes from 0 to bringing down the LAW without any intermediary steps, and in a public fashion. You're certainly within your rights, but there are ways of sorting this out without making yourself look like the RIAA.
As for everyone else, I'm sure you've all never downloaded an MP3, or a movie at any point (certainly not at this very moment), copied a CD/DVD, or anything of the sort, right? I mean, I'm SURE the righteous indignation is entirely unhypocritical.

There's a difference between copying and plagiarizing.

So laws that you have broken are ok to break, and laws that you haven't broken are wrong to break? Is that basically what we're saying here?

I don't think anyone can say I have been unfair. I gave him repeated informal warnings, and a private message. I told him what I expected to be changed and was entirely reasonable about it - on 4 separate occasions in this thread alone.
For those wondering, my PC has no pirated software/games (Thanks Steam!), and no pirated music either (Thanks Spotify!) so I think I can safely say I've not been a hypocrite. I always give plenty of warning before taking an issue further.
Hey, if you warned him privately first, that's perfectly fair and I retract what I said. I had just assumed, perhaps incorrectly that the beginning and end of your dialogue with him was on this thread. And my "hypocrisy" thing wasn't leveled at you, but the people who were getting in line acting all outraged as if copyright infringement isn't something that the average internet user engages in at some point or another.

I think the problem here was the utter cheek of the OP to steal from the same community he professes to care about (i.e., us lot) and then bare-faced flaunt that theft. Mental visions of a 'what, me?' expression on his face when someone points out that that's their TV he's trying to sell them and that he's the one who stole it.
There is that, and I definitely understand that. As a general rule my initial regard of someone under the age of 15 is at best, derision. I just know how nonsensical people get in regards to copyright infringement and tend to take the side of the "little guy". However; in this case, it would appear that PhonicUK did the right thing and I overreacted.

Besides: We all might have done something wrong. It is useless to complain about it: Let the responsible people deal with it (the publishers with games and so on).
Reading articles pertaining an argument often gives you an one-sided view. Especially newspapers do that (as well as a majority of websites). In this case it would have been the best to warn a moderator about this topic and let them deal with it together with OP and PhonicUK (hell I wouldn't even have cared whether PhonicUK did or didn't pirate games. I've pirated Call of Duty Black Ops as well and saw how shitty it ran on my i7 + 2x GTX460 desktop, fortunately my i3 + HD5470 laptop can run it reasonably smooth... I've got CoD: BO legit now :wink.gif:)
To PhonicUK: You could ask one of the hosts that has taken Mega down to release the IP-address of Mega and then use that to send an email to the abuse@ address of Mega's ISP. Maybe that a letter addressed from his ISP to his parents will make his parents start checking what Mega is actually doing.
HAHAHAHAHAH!
OH NOEZ! DONT DO THAT D:
And my hosting can give my ip address away, that would be illegal.
And my parents don't care what I do on the internet.

It's not illegal for your IP address to be given away... Every admin and moderator here knows exactly what your IP is. Your IP is logged everywhere you go, I know everyone's IP that has gone onto my webspace, and my ventrilo server. There's a difference between laws and privacy policies, and a privacy policy will only go so far when you do something illegal.
Also the idea of your parents not caring what you do on the internet is ludicrous, especially if you're under 18. If you're doing anything illegal they're responsible for it (at least in the US, I have no clue where you're from as your location is not listed.) If you get a fined levied against you, they're paying it, if you have illegal data on your computer (torrented games, music etc) they're responsible for it, so I really doubt that your parents don't care what you do.

14 years old and he already thinks that he knows the law very well.
It is not illegal to give the IP-address on request when their client is violating the DMCA, so the copyright-holder can pursue further actions against the client violating the DMCA. They have nothing to gain by keeping your IP-address secret, as they'll have to give it away after a judge orders them to (and they won't defend you).
Besides, even the administration of this forum can give your IP-address to PhonicUK. It would only be more easily overthrown in a lawsuit since it doesn't necessarily say that it is the same user as the one that actually did the copyright infringement. Throwing it on privacy laws might or might not help. For example the Irish law doesn't see the IP-address as personal information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyrighted_content_on_file_sharing_networks#Copyright_law_in_European_Union here is some more information.
Your parents might not worry about what you are doing on the internet but they will worry if it will cause the ISP to disconnect them or get your parents into a lawsuit.
If the server is taken down what does it matter?
And congradulations, you proved me wrong.

Isn't stealing stealing? Please enlighten me.
As a side note to this topic: Downloading MP3s, etc. is stealing. Good observation. Taking someone's work and not citing sources, etc. is plagiarism. So, stealing is stealing, and plagiarism is both stealing and plagiarism. You're arguing a different point than what Phonic and the others are trying to get at. If I may: Lrn2reason.
Also, why are you insisting on keeping this up, Mega? One host took you down so you think another one is going to keep you up? When it comes down to it, whoever is hosting you is going to protect their butt over yours in a DMCA throwdown.

Or someone will just read the WHOIS records and call his mommy & daddy and tell them what he is up to. Easy as that.
I never said I was going to use his css again, I said I got new hosting. Where did you get the idea I would do that, exspecially after my other hosting took it down. I was saying that because Phonic felt the need to brag about it being taken down, after others were telling me to grow up. Of course no body noticed his "touch down!" post. Does that not make him immature? Especially when me saying I don't care made me "immature".
well this thread never actually improved. It's locked, now. To the original poster, taking credit for other people's work IS actually against the forum rules. keep this in mind if you make a new thread.
Well, not technique stealing, but use theirs
