For an Indie Developer, I would say thats a Dream Team for sure.
I'll go with you on that... But now that Notch has pulled several million dollars, he's breaking into the big gaming industry. I can only imagine he's going to start hiring a bunch more people after beta.
Several million will not break you into the "big" gaming industry. Think in the hundred millions. There are many indie game companies who have hit the millions, he'll need to make more before the industry starts taking him seriously.
I had to stop running my server because of too much lag, I guess its true only 50% of the servers that get started don't stay running. I have a computer about the same specs as alienware but its not enough, I guess to host a server you need either a super computer, like one with a brain or something..., or a dedicated one. I have tried to get a job to get more money. I will have to try my luck in finding a good server to play on.
You are an incompetent fool "Alienware" is not a measure of computing power.

The issue does indeed lie with Notch's files that he has released. Players take up double the CPU usage with these latest updates, which is bringing powerful servers to slow crawls. Mine for example: I have a Linux VPS that ran PERFECTLY with very many players on it. Then one of the latest updates hit, and it's now nearly impossible to play with just one person.
go notch yay whatever.

I host a server that regularly has 10-15 people on it. The world is actually pretty decently big at 170MB currently and this is only after ~5 days of being online. We reset the world on Friday last week!

Server Specs
Intel Core2Quad 2.5Ghz
8GB DDR2-800
150GB Western Digital Raptor 10,000RPM
Cox Cable Internet 30Mbps Down / 3.5Mbps Up
We are seeing a little lag but its pretty smooth up to about 15 players.
well I think my computer has better specs but I don't know about speed. my download speed was 17.28 (I think) and up was 2.something, so slower than yours.

The only skill in minecraft is pvping, no such thing as skilled in anything else and I don't care if you disagree.
(sorry for double post, even though im OP) About the speed, it was 17.28 on a site then I went to 2wire which is my provider (at&t 2wire) and it was pretty jumpy.

You'll want at least double that for upload. One of the servers main functions is to synch the map to everyone, which requires downloading updates from each person then uploading each of those updates to everyone that is in range to render it.
It's not the best there is but it's far from slow... It's faster than mine by double (and a bit) yet I have no issues hosting. The lag could be from players connecting with crappy connections. The speed can only go as fast as the slowest connection. If people are moaning about lag chances are they have fail Internet.
Minecraft is crazy CPU intensive. Since its alpha Notch is focusing on major gameplay updates and bug fixes rather than streamlining the game. Oh, and for a large server, you want at least 200mbps upload rate. I once hosted a temporary server for my clan... if peopel went exploring it took 1gb of ram. And there was only about 6 people on at a time.

this... Alpha is usually for game play content, Beta is usually for compatibility and optimizing. IMO i dont think notch even reads the support forums as he doesnt really need to.
so technically the fact that it already runs on multiple OS, all types of cards, and ram/cpu configurations is a big plus (mostly due to it being written in java). there are retail games out there right now that run half as good and only on windows.
there are many people running servers perfectly fine. the people that come ***** and complain here, notchs blog, notchs email, and other forums are part of a small percentage and a high percentage of their problems are user error.

rally this post is quite messy lets do it straight forewards.
CPU
internet upload (don't care much about download speed for this)
and ram
if the world is large then the hard drive matters but don't care about the size really it is the speed of it, standard drive is 7200 rpm (on a stationary PC that is 5800 or something on laptops) and should be more than enough to host a server although 10000 would help, whether you have 10 gig or 10 tb dont matter in any other way than the % of your disk that is used makes the disk read slower
you never said any of those specs, how much ram you got? what is your CPU efficiency and the hard drive SPEED. your internet as the only valid thing you gave us to work with is OK but not good, if you should use wireless i would say get a cable in there, if not then upgrade to my speed http://www.speedtest.net/result/1067659180.png xD
My Q9300 gets hit up for around 5% of it's potential power at any given time. Minecraft server is not CPU intensive.
RAM will get used no matter what, but I have 4Gb in my machine, and the server uses around 700Mb whether 2 or 10 people are logged in... it doesn't seem to swagger much, but seems to grow more depending on the map size more than anything else.
The hard drive is the slowest denominator when it comes to hardware... unless your PC is some ancient pile of ****, then well, the hard drive is probably still the slowest part. Don't listen to people who are suggesting that you need a quad Xeon xtreme with 32Gb of RAM... If anything a faster hard drive would probably yield the best result and probably cost the least.
Also, whoever said 200mbit internet?? ROFL?! So, you need a pair-gain fibre line straight into your PC for upload only? HAHAHAHAH WHAT? I have 1mbit upload, and my server runs fine. It's far from lag-free but it's more than playable for pretty much everyone who joins.
At the end of the day, faster internet or faster hard drive... or both. Don't go wasting money on a faster CPU or more RAM unless you need it for other stuff too.
Its not his fault it came out a year ago its the best he can do he is trying the best he can, and I'm talking about Notch, he has too much stuff on his mind right now.

For server hosting, the CPU is BARELY utilized. It is most dependent on RAM, and the upload speed.
Then thing that is the most crazy is the bandwidth usage. I've seen .48 megabits PER PLAYER idle!

That is a run-on sentence.
Seriously, can we get back to helping the guy with his server? Go to PMs if you want to titfortat each other's grammar and spelling.

That's not saying anything at all. My comp is 3x as good as an Alienware and costs $200 less.
