I had to stop running my server because of too much lag, I guess its true only 50% of the servers that get started don't stay running. I have a computer about the same specs as alienware but its not enough, I guess to host a server you need either a super computer, like one with a brain or something..., or a dedicated one. I have tried to get a job to get more money. I will have to try my luck in finding a good server to play on.

What are the specs and how many players were you trying to have online at once? Running a server certainly isn't resource efficient, but it's not impossible.

Wondercraft SMP! wondercraft.ca! All are welcome.
Dedicated VPS, 30 slots, 24/7 uptime and a great community!
Runs Runecraft, Llama, hMod and many plugins.
To save everyone the effort, I have taken the time to list most (if not all) the canned replies that are normally posted in these types of threads:
- It's in Alpha
- Request a refund
- You're a faggot
- You're a brat
- Long winded post about how he doesn't owe you anything
- Notch is one guy
- Notch is busy
- Agreement with the op, causing a discussionless flame war that moderators lock after 3-4 pages.
- There are mods for that
- Argurement that aforementioned mods exist because notch sucks
- Incoherent post that appear to have something to do with SMP, but you can't read it.
- Single Player is more of his focus over Multiplayer
- Link to the current "EULA"
- Link to another thread of a similar topic
- Image post along the lines of 'lol internet'
- MSPaint image insulting the op (Later to be followed by a mod warning)
- Post consisting of nothing but Notch faces
- Trololol
- Link to a My Chemical Romance video
- You're emo
- You're a baby
- Immature "baw baw" post
- waaaaahmbulence
- Go back to /b/ and or /v/
- GTFO / STFU / GO AWAY TROLL
- You're a troll
- Post count comparasion
- Some long winded post that is tl;dr
- Get a life
- Death threats
- "Can a mod lock this thread?"
- Go back to playing Halo / CoD / Counter-Strike
- Something about Quatroking
- Something about personal income
- Something about how much money Notch makes
For an Indie Developer, I would say thats a Dream Team for sure.
I'll go with you on that... But now that Notch has pulled several million dollars, he's breaking into the big gaming industry. I can only imagine he's going to start hiring a bunch more people after beta.
My friend runs 4-6 man server with no problems. Are you talking about a larger server?
None of us run very good computers at all and we have plenty of fun. My other friend ran a 3-4 man server on his laptop, playing on the computer that was running the server, and it was fine.
Maybe you're talking about lag with mobs? That's just part of the game for now.
It's not your computer I can assure you of that. I host a server that regularly has 10 people or more at once on it, and the only people who lag are the ones with shitty internet.
If you are hosting, you need a fast upload speed, and if your world is large, a fast hard drive (preferably an SSD but a hybrid is also fine).
not a large one just small - medium. We have the best internet with our provider. I have a TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-H635G drive, 1tb space plus a 320gb external drive. Mobs are off.

One of 2 things, I re-downloaded the .jar file and still stupid message pops up )the overloaded one), or its problem that effects all of the files even if your re download.

bro........... none of that **** has ANYTHING to do with your computers speed. (EDIT: for hosting minecraft)
I'm curious as to what the "best internet" is....
EDIT to add content:
I'm running Minecraft on what is the equivelant of a Netbook with more RAM (i built it originally to just be a media PC):
Intel Atom N450 1.66GHz
4GB RAM (This is important)
Comcast 22/5mbps (down/up... this is also important)
Everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) else is going to have almost zero effect on performance of the server... The HDD doesn't get a whole lot of read/write activity (at least on my setup), the GPU is not used for anything, and I've had 6 or 7 people in there for hours on end. The world we run is pushing 20MBs, not sure what yours is at.
If you're hosting MC on the computer you're trying to play it on, that is the problem. I don't have any trouble running but if i try to run a server on my gaming PC, it just stutters a lot. I would check with the other people who connect to see if they experience lag. If they do, then you probably should be looking at how CPU, RAM, and internet connection stack up instead of looking at your DVD player and external HDD (please tell me that Minecraft server isn't running off the External drive. Please.) Minecraft really doesn't need a fast HDD (certainly does not need a SSD) when the entire world is like 20-50 megabytes.

- You're a faggot God you're a moron.
- You're a brat See above response.
- Long winded post about how he doesn't owe you anything Long winded? You mean like this stupid list?
- Notch is one guy Yeah, lets forget that company he has going now.
- Notch is busy See above, and append the fact that he has started a new game with his company as well beside minecraft.
- Agreement with the op, causing a discussionless flame war that moderators lock after 3-4 pages.
- There are mods for that
- Argurement that aforementioned mods exist because notch sucks Notch does suck, and if not for the mods that were out it wouldn't be worthwhile running the servers.
- Incoherent post that appear to have something to do with SMP, but you can't read it. Incoherent? that sounds like this list.
- Single Player is more of his focus over Multiplayer Yes it seems to be, because he is yet to break stuff in singleplayer every patch.
- Link to the current "EULA" Stfu, nobody reads them anyways.

I got bored about halfway down when it screamed retard had made this list.
Heres a tip to the OP, don't assume notch will fix anything in the upcoming patches, just expect excrement and more bugs, because chances are thats what we're going to get.
Mod edit: You realize that list was a post of things the poster expects OTHER people to say, yes? Even still, calling people morons is not quite the level of respect that we would hope would get extended to other forum members, hypothetical or not. Warning issued.

When your world starts hitting 60-70Mb+ the hard drive becomes more of an issue. My drive gets hammered when loads of people are online especially if they are warping around a lot.
As this poster mentioned though, the most important thing is the speed of your internet, and yes... what exactly is "the best internet" anyway? Are you running fibreoptic directly into your computer? I doubt it.

Cry me a river, Recursion. The game IS in Alpha whether you choose to believe it or not. By definition, Alpha is when loads of content is added and little kinks are worked out. What we're entering is beta, the time when all the serious bugs are worked out between the pieces of content. Sure there will be more updates and more bugs, but they'll get fixed quickly enough because that's just what happens in beta. If the game is released full of bugs; if it is a complete mess like it is now; if it SUCKS, come find me, I will listen to your complaining. :smile.gif:

Generally speaking, one would expect improvements in the quantity/severity of bugs over the timeframe of the game's Alpha phase. This has not been the case. This game is significantly more unplayable now than it was when I first started a few months ago. It's gotten to the point where I don't even bother updating our server anymore (I run a private server with a few of my friends), because 9 times out of 10 there's some crippling, game breaking bug that ends up messing everything up, and I have to spend an undue amount of time restoring backups and updating mods. And you know what? It's getting to the point where it's not worth it anymore. When things finally do stabilise, the only difference we're seeing is that there's some new feature that half works and about 15 new bugs or lag issues.
I don't know what you're referring to when you say "What we're entering is beta". I have seen nothing that indicates to me that this game is advancing in any way whatsoever. That's like watching your house burn down around you while assuring your family that renovations are almost complete.
Aside from rebuttals to fanbois, I don't complain about this game often, because I understand that I really don't have a say in how/if Notch fixes the issues that I have with the game. At the same time I'm losing interest in minecraft quickly, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Also, what OS are you using?
There's a thread on this forum on tweaking the server. I'll post a link later when I have access to my pc, as opposed to posting from my iPhone. But you should be able to find the thread.
There could be any number of reasons for increased lag. The number of players, for one. Ram, CPU and upload/download speed, what else is running on the machine, etc, etc.
You're goin to receive an above average number of flames for your post due to how you approached the issue. Changing your title to something more neutral, or descriptive of your problem, will increase the constructiveness of people's replies to you.
