Heres the thing. Dying? Yea. That's supposed to be permanent. The fact you can get you stuff back is usually because your not too far from spawn. This is so new players don't ragequit, and to help them out a bit. When you get as far as you do, you dying is usually easily recovered from. Just put a chest called "OShi-" and put a diamond pick tool set, a 64 stack of trees, a 64 stack of coal, and maybe food. Iron works too. It's meant to help out newbies.
Minecraft would probably be a lot more enjoyable in the long term if you can move your spawn by constructing a certain object, like a bed, much like constructing a portal gives you access to the Nether. The problem is that there's two conflicting ideas. It's an infinite world, you're encouraged to explore and go on adventures. On the other hand, you have a fixed spawn, and it gets more dangerous the further away you are from it. It's silly that the game penalises you for taking advantage of the huge map available.
So far I've not seen a server that doesn't use Hmod, which has a /sethome command. However, I agree even in raw vanilla there should be a way to move your spawn. Sure, you might get lucky and spawn in an area with lots of wood and a huge, rich, mine nearby, but what are the odds?
Also, with the chest idea, that works for sand/falls/mobs and maybe water (dont remember) but Lava will destroy a chest, as will PVPers. If your on a "safe" server without PVP, then yeah, that's an option (you can even set it up on top of 2 stone blocks so lava wont get to it). I have like 5 bases with fully-stocked larders, crafting blocks, etc. all connected by teleports (runecraft)
Personally, I'm also of the opinion that the time limit is fine. Though I wish mobs would wander off a little sooner since when I get ganked (attached by numerous mobs at once) they're usually all still there when I get back and I die a second time...

I'm not going to flame against you, I just truely can't understand this complaint.
No me this has never been a problem. Anyplace where I'm far enough away that I can't get back in 5 minutes the chunk unloads and stops the timer
That is exactly what typically happens to me. When I die and I am quite far off from my spawn point, I can go back there several day/night cycles later to the place I died and all of my stuff is still there. The only critical thing is that once I decide to go back to the place, that I head straight back without stopping so that once the chunk loads (and the timer starts again), I can get my stuff in time. if someone else walks into the area before I get there, then I might lose all of my stuff.
It's a game where, if you're not careful, there's death. There is a penalty for dying, just like in real life. Man up.
The penalty for death in MineCraft is waaaaay less than in Real Life(tm). You only get one Real Life, where as in MineCraft you can die over and over and over again in a multitude of amusing and hilarious ways. :tongue.gif:

Dying is dying is dying. On my server, we play ULTRA HARDCORE mode, where if someone dies, THE ENTIRE SERVER RESETS.
Seriously though: Multiplayer? Get friends. Learn to defend yourself better. Single player? If you don't play Hardcore mode you don't know about Minecraft. Dying is part of the game for a reason. That reason is not to hold your hand.
I haven't died on my server for weeks because I know what I'm doing. We have underground railway systems and tunnels between our bases, and only the bravest of us go above ground. We have entire parties put together to take out dungeons. It adds spice to the game.
This is a serious thread about a real concern. It's a problem when it doesn't even take 30 seconds to respawn, warp to base, walk 15 seconds downstairs to get back to the location I died and find my items are already gone.
I usually don't have to many gripes about the game, but this is ridiculous and needs to be fixed. There is no real reason why items should not last at least a day/night cycle even when in the same chunk as the player. This is a bug that needs to be fixed.

And I'm serious when I say: Man up, or play Peaceful.

Have you submitted a bug report then?
Where are logs kept that I can submit for the bug report?
It discourages you from running into a mine and dropping 5 stories to your death because you weren't careful. The fact that you get some time is better than nothing, and infact is rather considerate when I notice I'm playing survival.
One of the many reasons I don't let it bother me too much. Helps me take my time, fluidly execute each movement, mine my way to heaven.
items in minecraft disappear after 5 minutes, and that is only when the chunk with the items is loaded (ie if you die on the other side of your map and hang around at the spawn for 20 hours the items will still be there)
you guys are bad @ video games
Single player? If you don't play Hardcore mode you don't know about Minecraft. Dying is part of the game for a reason. That reason is not to hold your hand.

The problem is that items despawn way too fast. You should have enough time to reach it; one day/night cycle.
<sarcasm/serious suggestion>
Or how about this: (Between MEGA ULTRA HARDCORE and ULTRA HARDCORE) when you die, minecraft deletes itself and all your minecraft save files from your computer, and disables your account, so you have to pay to play again. Or in multi, it happens to everyone when someone dies.
Or how about this: (ANNOYANCE MODE) Items despawn when seen.

The eloquence astounds and brings tears to my two-pixel eyes
You ought to write a book or start a thread of Minecraft poetry.
I know how you feel. Last night, I was mining, and I had mined a lot. I had nothing on me but a pick and mats, and I found a patch of Iron. I mined the bottom one, and under it was lava. I tried digging my way out, but by the time I did, I still died, and I lost my 2 stacks of iron that I had on me. I rage quit after that. I was so mad. I had to start all over.
Didnt Notch say that he'd consider adding an item that, if you had it in your inventory at the time of death, when you die, all ur items will be contained in a chest at the point of ur death, instead of spewed over the ground?

NBTEdit will allow you to move your spawn point, along with lots of other things.
If you are in control of your server, you can always /give yourself the stuff you lost.
To the OP, these things won't prevent your death, but they might go a ways to making death easier.
Or you could always just not die. :tongue.gif:

I'm not going to post any further in this thread because this post sums up my opinion.

ip please?
It's really not that hard to recover items. Mobs CANNOT catch you. If you run circles around them you can get to your items. Play better.

Actually, I think I like this idea better:
