I know there has been a debate about this on various servers about whether or not Creepers should explode.
I personally believe that as they are right now, Creepers are no better than griefers. They come out of nowhere, they explode if you get too near, and they cause destruction that doesn't make the game any fun to repair.
If you have good spatial awareness, you can pretty much avoid any creeper explosions except the ones that are so random that you don't even know how it happened.
p.s. as cliché as it sounds, this isn't creative. if you want creative with survival type gameplay, get a mod to disable creepers or turn off monsters
I just posted this and it said it posted but my post isn't here.... so let's try this again.
It wouldn't be a problem if not for the invisible monster bug. You go outside your home and suddenly you explode, then explode again, then explode again thanks to 3 invisible creepers (this happened to me last night in an area surrounded by torches. Then you get to spend the next 10 minutes getting your stuff back and filling in the giant hole they caused. Not fun.
Normal visible creepers aren't much of a problem except for new players for whom it is incredibly frustrating. Until invisible monsters are fixed explosions should be disabled. Also creeper explosion size should be reduced slightly.
I think that creepers should definably explode, but that there should be an option to turn them off in the server.properties file.
In my server (running Runecraft) we have built a complicated teleporter system that will take you from anywhere important to anywhere else important. I turned monsters on for five minutes and a creeper took out a critical node, isolating the spawn point from the rest of the system.

So you switch to using personal teleporters until the node is fixed.
It's a good way, though, to find weak points in your system.
Just like everything else important to people in game, you should definitely be protecting the waypoints from mobs and griefers, not just leaving them out in the open. On my server, the waypoints are located either on the roof, or in a room in the basement, out of the way from casual inspection, and protected from creepers and other mobs by walls, doors and ceilings.
EDIT: And yes, definitely keep the creepers' exploding in the game. Nothing gets the blood flowing more than looking at a spot, looking away, then looking back AAAAAAAHHHHHHH *BOOOM*

So are you complaining about the invisible bug or the creeper mechanic? I am confused.
If you do not like creepers, wait until creative mode or get a mod to nerf/remove them.
If the bug you are experiencing is your problem, submit a bug report and either learn to live with it until its fixed, or do not play until its fixed.
Creepers are part of the standard game play and will probably not be nerfed or removed. A lot of people find them challenging and fun mobs. I personally enjoy building my base to be creeper proof by setting up fences everywhere around my "property" and lighting up the area so they cant spawn in my yard. I also enjoy the reward of successfully killing them without them blowing up and getting gunpowder.
Invisible creepers are a pain, but a pain I can live with. I was walking along my 3/4 block-high wall when a creeper decided to detonate itself under my feet, blowing out the wall but only damaging me for half a heart. I don't know what caused it to trigger, but all I had to do was patch up the wall with some mud temporarily.
Besides, it's easy enough to make an area mob-free if you want to do some serious construction work there.

One known cause for this is playing a mob-infested server with peaceful set. It doesn't make mobs invisible, but they appear to stay in place and sort of seizure to the client, while in reality they are moving around.
They're annoying, but there something thats just part of the game that makes it a bit more of a challenge. Sides, they don't do a lot of damage when it's only 1 creeper.

Everytime i log on, i expect to see my warn status go up.
I would like to add that I am not suggesting Notch remove Creepers exploding from the game. I am only talking purely from a server modification standpoint.
As for the "Just play creative when it comes out" - I don't want to just build and that's it. I like Survival mode, all of the monsters, dreading night time, etc... It's simply Creepers with their large destruction ability, leaving craters everywhere when they blow up that I have an issue with.
Also right now, with the lag that comes with monster combat, it's practically impossible to successfully kill a Creeper without it exploding.

Have you tried bow and arrows? My defensive areas have towers, and I usually can see the creepers nearby, and I make an effort to clear them out during the night. I also perform a creeper check every morning, running around the tower base to make sure it's clear.
I place cacti around the front door of my base, far enough away so that creepers won't trigger if I step outside my door. Cacti also provide cover from skeletons and their bows, and if you make openings only 1 block wide, spiders will run to you and die trying to get through the openings.
I've never had a creeper damage my buildings, though I have died to creepers a number of times, and I've had to reflatten land after they've cratered it.

Great ideas! I just got onto an RP server that has Creepers enabled. I'll try some of these tips and see how it goes.
