The OP's idea is brilliant, but a smart player will notice the TNT, so place a later of dirt (or w/e) under it, the acctual cieling looks innocent then.
Also, on servers that nerf TNT, it still makes for a wonderful "falling floor" when it's activated, make a nice pit below it, place a TNT "floor" then cover with sand or gravel (adding pressure-plates if needed to make it less obvious)
For servers running craftbook, another nice one is to have the floor really be a [bridge] and trigger the toggle with redstone, thus the floor falls out from under the player. Perhaps even add a repeat+delay so that after they fall the bridge re-appears, trapping them (works really well with a fast-moving stream and no lights, so they dont realize how far they've been swept down-stream for a few seconds --- several waterfalls make it even more interesting)
I want to agree with the "dont kill the player" idea, but make them "waste time escaping" a nice pit of obsidian so they cant quickly dig out is great. combining this with the water is even better. To _REALLY_ **** them off have it drop them (after several disorienting twists) into a maze. (this only works on servers that dont allow /warp or /home though)
i'm working on the assumption that people won't be allowed to warp out of whatever i've done when these are being put into practice. kinda kills the PvP idea if you can just disappear whenever stuff goes against you. ^^

-snip- ... or at best, will waste their time.
THIS. This is the idea that you need to follow through with. What you want, is not to kill the enemy, because that only allows them to respawn and resume their assault on you. [That said... sometimes killing the enemy is necessary and unavoidable] When you trap and enemy [literally] you can cause them to waste large amounts of time, during which you can either hide your valuables somewhere else, or prepare a new trap for when they finally escape.
yeah, they can respawn, but they also lose anything they might have been carrying with them when they do so. so if they had any materials, food, or equipment to help with their assault, that's all lost to them. a smart player will scavenge it when the trap is set off. alternately you could set it to fill with lava once it goes off, destroying anything he dropped and rendering the area dangerous to approach. yeah, wasting their time is helpful, but its just as much a time waster if they get sent back to their spawn. not only does it take their time, but it depletes materials as well.
This is a funny one to put in your enemies' homes.
= Lava
The torch is on a wall, the and the are above it. When the torch is removed the sand/gravel falls and the lava spews out.
Put a lot of torches in a room, so if they have OCD or want extra torches they'd gather them up. With luck, they won't notice the sand/gravel under one of them and would have to go through the trouble of removing the lava source. You could also probably use this is as a manually-activated trap, though; maybe make the lava spew into a room above the activation torch.
But, wouldn't the person who sprung the trap just respawn, go back to the place, and steal whatever they're going to steal because the trap isn't there anymore?
thats the thing about lava. it tends to be a mess until you can get at its source, which can be a pain. the trap doesn't stop working until he gets rid of the source.
It seems very similar to my last trap looking at it from the front, mostly because i'm looking at the traps as rooms. anyway, this trap is entered through a pressure plated iron door.
on the other side of the room, the door is open, but a block of dirt blocks passage. for the sake of argument, assume that this is built into a larger structure, that isn't entirely made of dirt. that would make removing the dirt here the path of least resistance, so if a person isn't wary, that will be their first choice.
the ceiling is higher in this trap than in my last, because this hole, in front of the entrance door, is important, and by raising the ceiling, it isn't as easily spotted. unless you're checking the ceiling, you won't even see it.
this is what waits outside the "exit". the single block of dirt is supporting sand, onto which a switch which activates the exit door is attached. when you break the dirt, the sand falls, breaking the circuit and causing the door to close. this traps the victim inside the room (again, assuming strong wall material than dirt.
the sand does one other thing though. the sand you see is one in a column of sand, leading up to this point. when the sand falls, the lava is released, and empties into the hole at the front of the room. because the exits are sealed, you can't get out, unless you came prepared with redstone torches. onces the lava reaches the hole, it fills the room, killing anyone inside.
and there is my second attempt at trapping. better than the first? worse? EDIT: images were small, i fixed them.
first they fall into a 1x1 pit with water at the bottom. I recall it being at least incredibly hard for you to jump and place a block under you while in water so once you are down there, you cant really tower yourself up.Then if you are lucky (or have admins that will assist you), you can position this such that you end up surrounded by bedrock and you cant even mine yourself out. unless you have a bucket to pick up the water, or sand/gravel to place above you to displace the water ... or you hack ... you truly are stuck.
i have devised the perfect secret entrance to any base ever. I don't know if its been said before, it may have, but i got the idea from that last idea. it works much the same, but with lava.
you drop through the lava, the water extinguishes you, and from there you're free to enter. if you want you could put a guard inside the entrance, if an enemy drops through, they'll be at a disadvantage from being hurt. put a high jump nearby to minimize the damage by jumping in. make a lava moat and hide this in it, and no one in their right mind will ever find it without knowing to look for it.
Aaaaanyway, a great trap I've found is simple misdirection. Make your house out of smooth stone, then make a simple hallway ending in something like dirt or cobblestone. Make a lot of signs, too.
"Do NOT enter!"
"Danger!"
They walk along, reading more and more, they see the poorly disguised area, they dig through, and.... Lava floods the entire area!
Heres a better idea:
Have the same thing, with lava in your ceiling. Make them want to dig up: Dirt part with ladders going up to fool them, and such. When they dig, they'll be on the aforementioned ladder, jump back after seeing the lava, and at that point it will have started to flood!

off-topic,but ZOMG I KNOW YOU.hi.
maybe make a pit fall with walls of cacti.if they die they drop their items and they MIGHT get scratched by the cacti.if they dont, you just got sum itemz.
Whew, that took a while...
Anyway, this is my little invention. Basically a lava-spring trap set off by a single tnt/pressure plate combo. Not much of a chance of getting your stuff back but it's pretty easy to clean up and reuse. Enjoy.

The only thing I'm not terrible at is being terrible.
Here's one for ya. Water can be held up by signs, so just make an inconspicuous looking water hole. Little do people know it's a 50 block drop below the thin layer of water. Who needs circuits and TNT when you have gravity?
If they somehow survive and try to dig their way out, the signs will be tossed off as the sand falls down, causing the water to fall down on them.
This is a good and simple trap, i like it.
Anyway can someone please post other simple traps that are easy to rebuild or don't even need to be rebuild?

I've actually adopted a very similar setup for my base entrance. i use the same system, but put a layer of lava above it, separated with signs in the same way from the water. if you jump in, you fall through the lava to the water, extinguishing you and allowing entrance into your base. there are a number of advantages to this, particularly if you use a moat of lava around your base. one is that it's virtually undetectable, as no one in their right mind would think to plunge into lava without knowing what was below. another is that anyone entering has the disadvantage of being injured when they get through. in the case of team PvP one could post a guard below, and he would always have the advantage over any intruder that might come through.

I'd like to hear more ideas for VANILLA servers that nerf TNT... I couldn't think of any really. I like the water trap idea. Any others?
